Updated Our Journal (67): Here Come the Boxes!

tl;dr: Rewards begin shipping, new patch, and work on additional content begins.

Hi Castoffs!

‘Tis I, Eric Daily, here for an update. We have a few exciting topics to cover today, so let's jump right in!

Rewards Shipping

The first wave of shipments of backers’ physical goods has begun as of March 16th! They are shipping via UPS, and many of you will have already received shipping confirmation emails. You should receive a tracking number as part of your shipping confirmation. Many backers have already received theirs, but please be patient if you haven't got your shipping confirmation yet, as there are still many thousands of boxes rolling out!

Shipping Address Changes & Delivery Issues

If you receive a shipping confirmation, and the shipping address your package is being sent to is incorrect, or you encounter another delivery issue, you can use the button at the UPS web site under your tracking page to request changes to your shipment.

Please note that because the shipping is being done by UPS, you can contact UPS customer service directly to discuss change of address or possible pick-up at your nearest UPS pick-up point. If you are unable to resolve any shipping issue with UPS, however, please submit a support request and we shall assist further!

Also, note that signed goods require some extra time due to the additional turn-around required for the signing process. These will ship a bit later as a result, so if you are receiving signed goods and don't get your confirmation immediately, DO NOT PANIC!!1 This doesn't indicate a problem.

inXile Help Center

Over the last few months, we've received an increasing number of help requests, especially around release of our games, and we've sometimes had trouble keeping up with the feedback. To better serve you, and make sure relevant information can be found all in one place, we have launched a new Help Center page.

This also comes with a new ticket request system, which will help both you and us stay on top of messages more easily and they get answered in a timely fashion.

New Patch

Next, we have a new patch for Torment on PC! (It will also be coming to consoles very shortly.) Below you can see the highlights. If you are playing on Steam you will have already likely downloaded it, while if you're on GOG, it'll be up as soon as possible!

  • Fixed a large number of freezes that would happen in various states.
  • Numerous performance optimizations
  • Addendum text should now be appearing on item descriptions. Many dozens of items now have more details depending on your lore skills and other factors!
  • Fixed an issue that was preventing party members from bantering. Party members should now be much more talkative!
  • Updated a number of crisis sequences to rebalance a number of enemies. In some situations, it will make combat proceed more quickly with combats that were sluggish.
  • Numerous fixes and improvements to movement grid, pathing, and AI. This should prevent issues where the game would hang as combat could get stuck in numerous situations.
  • Several quest and conversation fixes.
  • Inspiring Presence and other looping sound effects have been removed.

As you can see from the highlights, this update is focused mostly on performance improvements and bug fixes. For the full release notes, see here. But, of course, we have more in the works...

Oom & Voluminous Codex

Design and writing work has begun on some of the content additions that we spoke about last Kickstarter update.

Oom's character is currently being built out by Colin McComb and Gavin Jurgens-Fyhrie, and they're working hard to make it a unique character that also fits in with the overall storyline of the game. On the design front, initial work has been done on figuring out what kinds of abilities and features Oom will have, both during exploration and Crisis gameplay. Meanwhile, the art team has begun the initial stages of figuring out his character model and design.

Regarding the Voluminous Codex, most of the writing and user interface design work has been completed, and we are in the beginning stages of integrating it into the game itself, both in the interface itself as well as all the hooks and triggers to make sure the entries are unlocked at the right stages of the game. Similar to other RPGs, the Codex entries you receive will give you details on companions and characters you meet as well as provide additional lore about the world, factions, creatures, and cults.

As we stated last time, we don't have dates for these additions just yet as our focus is on doing them right. However, as mentioned, these will be completely free to all backers and owners of Torment. We hope to have them in time to give you an even more fresh experience for your second (or third, or fourth...) playthrough. We will keep you informed as progress is made!

Thanks for all your support and stay tuned!

@Andrey Ivanov I have the same problem. Did you managed to get yours? If so, how did you do that?

    2. Andrey Ivanov on

Can't get my from UPS because they are asking for a order confirmation and detailed description of items inside the package. inXile support isn't very helpful too. What a shit show. Almost as bad as a game itself...

    3. Kurt Jaegers

Received my copy a day or so ago (oddity collector). The paper supports inside the box are all torn up, but the rest of the contents seem ok. The design of the box interior seems like there is a pretty good chance of it getting mangled as things flop around inside during shipping.

    4. SinoSamba <(-'.'-)> on

Received the box today, all in good condition. Thanks :)

Got the package today, everything was fine with the shipment. I was surprised that it was shipped from France. It must have cost a lot to ship from France to Alaska with 2 day delivery.

Got my Box a few days back and it's quite a disapointment, inside of the box is damaged because everything was just thrown inside, Art book is only postcard size and like the map does not have much to do with whats actually in the game.
The greatest fail is however the game DVD, which is just a steam installer. So no physical copy, just a steam code (on a piece of paper).
If it's just the steam version I really don't need a dvd for that, also I wanted a gog version, but no informations that it is not included in the physical rewards where given.

Got my package today. The contents are pretty mangled. It's jsu at poster, but all the same, I like them without holes in them. Anyone know how I go about getting a replacement. Also, a little annoyed it isn't the concept art of Sagus Cliffs like it was hinted at when I ordered one.

Got my package 2 days after email notification (and on the predicted delivery date). Package fine. Contents fine. Box is kind of an idiot test (for idiots like me). Magnets hold down one side while glue holds down the other. Not recommended that you pry the glued side.

    9. Quinch on

      I dislike this update enormously.

I mean, come on, no "numenerous performance optimizations" pun? Come on!!

For those wondering, it's about 20-30 hours of gameplay to finish the story and explore all areas. That said, I am by no means a speed-runner and a large % of that could have been skipped.

I did enjoy it, though the missing features make it less of-interest to me to go back through and explore again. I've already interacted with all the companions in what I feel to be a sufficiently detailed manner that going back just feels repetitive (I did try.)

So it's done, it's more or less what was promised, and it's not a bad game. I wish there was more to do as each area is fairly linear and aside from slightly different quest resolutions based on your choices there's not of room for variety. Like, I think each major area had like 4-5 questlines, for a total of like 20 quests in the game. Now, that's not necessarily a bad thing: I get fatigued by games that fill you up with a bunch of meaningless quests.

Definitely the strongest part of this game for me is the depth of the story and lore. The details on oddities and other items about where they come from and what they are is fascinating. Similarly, in Baldur's Gate I'd always read the descriptions for unique items, and honestly I think torment does this better. The character interactions are also interesting. I often skip dialogues in games, but never felt the need in Torment: Tides (aside from the second playthrough.)

For anyone tabling this game, I don't imagine a few more companions or foci will add much to the experience, but do whatever works for you.

    11. BlackGauntlet

Seriously, with this much changes (not that I don't appreciate it even though it was promised in the first place), this game seems like it's still in Early Access.

I'm gonna lay this bad boy down in Steam and let it stew for another good while until it's actually done... in a year or two. Just in time for the enhanced version to be announced after being informed that Bard's Tale 4 will be sold in Early Access to the public at the same price as backer's pledge and inevitably delayed.

Two phonecalls and an e-mail later, and I finally tracked my package down to a delivery hub in Sacramento. They gave me a three hour window to come collect it. Signed for the package, opened it up on the spot, exterior of the box is damaged, interior of the box is damaged, Soundtrack CD has popped out of the packaging and is loose. Whatever entity you chose to package and ship these things is terrible. If it weren't a crowdfunded endeavor I'd return it immediately. I hope you get a serious discount or a refund from the people you paid to do this work for you because it doesn't sound like I'm the only person with issues.

$5M and 4 years... seriously, what where you doing?

Oh, and you forgot the paragraph about redesigning the console-port that we currently have from the ground up as a native PC game. Why does the camera follow CHARNAME around?... Oh, right - cause I'm playing a PS4 and XBox One game on PC. And controllers...

Mine is due to arrive today here in Australia. *Still* haven't had a chance to play yet, but really looking forward to it. :)

So 4 weeks after the release of the retail CE the backers finally get their collector's editions without the statue and the tidal talisman.

      Congratulations, inXile!

I received my shirt, thank you. It was interesting that it came from France to the USA.

Really really disappointed with the the collector's box, which is why I selected the tier I did.

@Sabathius Not for GOG. The drop down is Steam only.

@kwerboom It's already available through a download from their web site.

    21. Brian Heinz on

Admittedly my play though of Torment is going so slow I'll probably get this stuff before I've finished, but I want to commend you for trying to make good on the stretch goals you promised your backers. It's nice to see a company that doesn't see the release of the game as being the same as saying the game is "Finished".

    22. Edward Kirwan on

Mine already shipped, but it's going to my old address (college). I've already graduated and the window for package forwarding has passed. My fault for not updating in time. Unfortunately, I called UPS and they can't change the address, so I'm in a bit of a bind. I put in a support request, so fingers crossed!

    23. Wyndorel on

Received my box today, that was pretty fast!

But I have to say it's pretty odd to have such a huge box with such small content inside! Honestly think the art book should have been printed in A4 format; this "pocket style" art book is not quite what I was expecting...
Anyway, I'll have to fill that box with as much goodies I can find, I guess. *all planned* :D

ETA on GOG version of "Backer Outfit Upgrade" please. Thank you.

    25. Mark Graydon on

Glad to see that you guys seem to be sticking to what you said about adding in companions. My biggest hope is that in addition to Oom, you'll add the other two companions that were funded by stretch goals and then cut.

But, I believe in praise when it's due, and I want to say I appreciate the work you're putting in now to make this game better. Please keep up the work!

    26. Ricardo Alves Junqueira Penteado on

      Those are very good news.

This game stumbled very close to being great.

If you just add the promised companions, so that we are not forced to use the lackluster ones, as well as romance options, I'll finally be able to recommend it.
