Updated Our Journal (42): Second Video - A World Unlike Any Other

Hi,

Kevin here. It’s our pleasure to share with you some of what we’ve been up to. You may recall from our Kickstarter that we defined four pillars as central to a Torment game – the video below focuses on the second one: A World Unlike Any Other. This video doesn’t show final content, but should give you a sense of the diversity and wonder of Torment’s corner of the Ninth World.

We hope you enjoy these glimpses of more of TTON’s environments.

I don't see this game coming out till the middle of 2016 maybe June or something. Judging by the lack of pictures and the videos and them switching to Unity 5 I think were almost year away still.

would be nice if you guys shared more pictures and concept art of creatures, or characters , clothing, or something.
or maybe your going to have another big update after E3?

Yawn based combat, I'm so using it as a future face recognition game control scheme.

    3. Lord Drakonor on

damn /// yawn based combat - now i remember why i stopped following updates .

@ETD I gave an example of a situation as Dark Scifi not an example of how I would want the game to be.
The game is already done already mapped out. Nothing would change that.
I just hope for an example like what I wrote.
Horror doesn't limit an emotional range, a person in true horror goes through tons of emotions.

@Rabain Knight OO are you new? I am sure they will create the combat so it's fun and works with there crises and tides in a fun game experience way.

    5. Rabain on

What I really want to see is a proper combat video. I don't care how early it is in development, I want to see it because deciding on turn based for this game was a big let down for me. I expected it to be real time with pause like all the Infinity Engine games and especially PST. So I want to see a turn-based combat video so I can judge how it looks. If it plays like Wastelands combat I will be disappointed, that is just too slow and random to be fun.

The graphics and effects are not a big deal, I don't expect much on the budget they have, like Pillars of Eternity. The combat is going to make or break this game for me.

    6. ET3D on

@StrangeCat, I hope that the game is adult, and isn't a horror game. Horror tends to limit the emotional range of any medium quite a bit (since it concentrates on one, horror) and therefore is the antithesis of adult.

      @Joao

Respectfully, I do not think you speak for "most backers" when you say "most backers" don't care about the updates. The updates contain information on the development of the game -- they're a bit like previews, but more detailed and personal. If you'd paid attention to them, you would be aware that the game had been delayed -- there was a pretty big announcement, as I recall. There might even have been two.

The delivery date is just an estimate, nothing more. From what I gather, it can't be changed once the campaign has launched, so if a project gets enough money to expand its scope and the creators decide to do so, it's just natural to expect things to take longer.

Also, it's notoriously difficult to estimate the work needed to complete a software project. Have patience!

I hope your game is adult. I want to see Dark Horror Scifi in this game.

Some cyborg machine that has existed for 1000's of years and continues to add to it's parts. It's made of flesh and machine and needs to consume organic flesh to survive, it's incredibly intelligent, but maybe it has forgotten it's purpose or how long it's life span has been. Perhaps you fight it later, or maybe it's a game of words...you have to do something for it.
Something like that, think HR Giger style.

There is an unbelievable amount of coolness you can do in your game!!!
I like what is happening in that first video feeding that guy to Maw to make a portal that was fantastic!

There should be very dark parts as well as what you showed as Environments in the second video.

How does one create Dark Horror Scifi in isometric? Well it can be done!

Did you change the name of Torment to Pillars of Eternity ?
I don't understand is this game I paid for released?
Or are you adverting for a different game? Is advertisement and stuff about other projects not allowed on Kicksstarter?
      Estimated delivery: Dec 2014
Is 6 months later and I'm clueless about where my game is....
I don't think most of the 75k of you backers cares about all stuff you put in your UPDATES.
We only care about when we are getting the steam key...

Wonderful... just a little observation: could be more background animation (like move camps on wind because seems too static), but It already very good :)

Please, don't rush game ending like in original Torment: after hours and hours of awesome dialogues, lore and narrative wires end to fast travel in various places, combats and no more beautiful dialogues and scenes :)

I fixed the HTML 5 problem. What it is, is FireFox defaults to HTML 5 for youtube.(this just happened with a new update)
you need to download an add on that gives you back Flash, then you can choose 1080p for resolution.
Your Video looks great! The environments remind me of those Old 1950 book covers! Fantastic!
Looks a long way off though. Spring 2016?

      http://news.softpedia.com/news/YouTube-Drops-1080p-Streams-from-the-HTML5-Player-394822.shtml
I didn't notice it till now everything in 360p!
If anyone else is experiencing this watching the video read above link.
If you know a work around please share.
And this is why I ask that you also put your videos on Vimeo.

Looks very promising though I agree with Dashiel's comment. I will hope for more polished lighting and animations ( especially the walks)! Very excited about the game anyway!

    17. Jekadu on

Come to think of it, Sanitarium is sort of what I imagine the mind voyage sequences will be like. Weird to ask it this late, but is it an inspiration? Has anyone on the team played it?

Looks really awesome! But please please please,as I already mentioned in the video comment, fix that frame-rate - even if it is just due to the video recording, this video represents the game after all - and those very awkward animations, especially those that occur when a character is stopping.

Otherwise the game looks and feels right, just hope that the dialogs and story will be up to par with Fallout 1 and Planescape Torment etc

    19. Dashiel Nemeth on

@Kevin Saunders and @Eric Schwarz, thanks for the replies and information. I'm a dev myself, so I both appreciate the restraint involved in not over-polishing early. My money's already in the pot, so I'd just as soon give a little input early and help make sure things come out as great as I'm imagining. :)

For the resolution thing, it's present throughout, and I expect it is indeed related to compression. IMO it'd be worth investigating alternate format or compression settings, as it looks like YouTube is doing you wrong here.

A good reference frame is at 0:58, where (in full screen 1080p) the edges of the barrels - and all the other geometry edges in the scene - have come out super fuzzy looking, as have all of the textures (most visible on the ground plain, as you might expect).

Instead of posting Youtube Videos it would be nice if you did Vimeo. Vimeo is much more professional then youtube.

    21. Sir Chaox on

I think the core of whats here (the different areas) is fantastic... Keep it up!
But I do feel the visuals and animations could be better (maybe this is a side-effect of the compression...)

Thanks for the quick replies guys, I'm looking forward to seeing more!

    23. Eric Schwarz on

@Dashiel Nemeth - Most of the shots were done in 4K on my home computer setup running in a stand-alone build. Unfortunately, a few shots had to be captured in editor due to some technical hiccups, and the quality and performance wasn't quite at the same level as a result. Those might be the inconsistencies you are noticing.

Video compression also does tend to reduce some of the fine detail. In the actual game everything looks crystal-clear and sharp. :)

    24. Kevin Saunders on

@All: thanks for your comments and feedback.

@Dashiel Nemeth: Thanks for the detailed critique! (and for listing time stamps! =) ) Nothing shown in the video is at final quality. (It is generally inefficient for us to bring content to final quality too early in the process. We didn't want to invest a lot of extra work for this video so we accepted that we'd be showing works-in-progress.) Plus, critiques such as yours help us learn what flaws are most noticeable to our backers -- there's no end to what we could polish and we want to be prioritizing the right things.

@Empirimancer: Our efforts to employ root motion animation techniques with a 3rd-person isometric camera have been an ongoing challenge. It's a work in progress. If you are interested in reading/discussing more, there's a thread on our forums that our animator created that's focused on animations. (You can reach the forums through tormentRPG.com).

@madGamer & The Dragons Eye Games: there's some more information about this on our forums, but generally speaking, we expect the final gameplay time to be similar to Planescape: Torment.

      Empirimancer on

The world looks great, conceptually, but Dashiel Nemeth's criticisms of the visuals are 100% correct. Also the combat animations don't look smooth at all.

    26. Dashiel Nemeth on

Visually, this is... really not what I'm hoping to see. A few criticisms:

The backgrounds look positively smudgy and low fidelity. Best case scenario is that this is a result of uprezzing the video, but it's not making things look good in any case.

A number of assets seem poorly executed, rushed, or outright incomplete. There are several types of issues that catch my eye here (with a key example of each):

      - Texture density seems really uneven across objects in the same scene (Ex: Rings @ 0:45).
      - Texture scale makes some objects look like toys shot in closeup (Ex: Building @ 0:40).
      - Material style is inconsistently painted (Ex: Castle @ 0:40), or realistic (Ex: Sack @ 0:30).
      - There's some really obvious low-poly work in baked backgrounds (Ex: Arch @ 0:25).
      - Some buildings lack trim and detail to give them a sense of scale (Ex: Building @ 0:40).

Also, the scene lighting (in absence of visual effects) seems to be very flat and over-bright, with a lot of pure white specular, which disrupts the ambiance and makes things look garish.

Can you guys Post a higher Res Video .
I think you completely nailed it with your first Video I mean just amazing!
      Everything pretty Perfect.
I think you should keep both voice actors in the game also.
This looks like you have some really great ideas for locations.
I like the vision you have for the music directing. Just Orchestrate the Main theme to Strings with some Horns as Harmony.
And Re-use that Main theme through out either strings with Dark Atmosphere underneath, or some other Cold Sounding instrument for the Main theme.
      Content in Video Looks pre-alpha.
      need to post 1080 Video.

    31. Datayum on

Looks varied, exotic and beautiful indeed, well done!

Now if you want some quick and easy criticism:
I found the voice over to be quite the opposite of this, rather basic and cliché.
The music was too discreet, didn't set any mood for me. Something varied, exotic and beautiful would have better accompanied the visuals. ;)
