Remasters Update

Hi All,

This week, we decided to not release the Bard’s Tale Trilogy remasters into Early Access and instead will continue pushing toward a fully complete build of the original Bard's Tale in mid-August. As we evaluated it, we felt like it was closer to a final build than we thought it would be at this point in development, and it wouldn’t be beneficial to put it into Early Access. Another plus is that we can include GOG then as well, a feature that we have been asked for during the last few weeks. The fully complete versions of The Bard’s Tale II and III will then be added in over the following months.

The wait will be a bit longer, but the end result - for all of our backers - will be worth it.

Until Next Time,

@AnGeLZzZ Early access can be a great tool. But you need a game that is more complete than not and you need a developer who realizes that the sales curve is different for an early access title than a standard release title.
Look at a game like Nuclear Throne. It ended up being 500% better than it would have been as a standard release game. There were like two years of interactions between gamers, streamers, and the developers to get the game to the point it is today. Over 100 updates.
Early access isn't for every title but for for the right titles it can make a huge difference.

Big like. I don't like the concept of Early Access in its current state anyway.

Thanks for GOG codes for backers! I hope to see a Linux version in the future. :)

It also would be nice to add a Russian localization for the Bard’s Tale 1-3!

Fine with the delay so GOG users get in at the same time … that said, I echo the comment below about the Satirical Bard Tale, when will GOG users get the Remastered and Resnarkled update?

One thing I really want to know is, if the first two games will allow your stats to go above 18? Otherwise characters transferred from BT 1&2 will be weaker than ones created in 3 because stats max at 32. Also would be nice to have the Chronomancer and Geomancer class in BT 1&2 as well as the new Bard Songs.

Thank you for reconsidering on making GOG backers wait for the whole trilogy to be done.

Thank you very much for all the effort you have put into this. BT was a large part of my early adolescents, and I can’t wait for the new story

Sounds like a very good reason for a delay. Giving a half-finished product to half the backers (non-GOG) was never ideal. Personally I would have waited for completion before playing them anyway.

    11. Christian Hoffmann on

So when are the novellas coming out? I'd love to catch up on everything again.

    12. Perius on

      Great news.
I already got to many hours in bt4 beta and you deliver on everything. You guys rock and alongside larian are a shining light in a industry that have mostly forgotten its roots and only go for profit. Keep up the good work ( and I wish you could get the amberstar license and do the same for that, not completed trilogy)

    13. Tomimt on

Crowdox definitely is a terribly designed system. I do hope I don't have to use it ever again in the future.

I'm ok with it, but I'm still not a fan of CrowdOX I still have problems getting in. You should be able to go to a backerkit portal and download what you got at anytime, not have to request an email survey which is wrong half the time. I don't know who sold this bill of goods to developers but I've not had success with it.

    17. Tomimt on

I'm okay with this. I was already thinking there would have been a lot of eyebrows lifted with a remaster of the original BT-trilogy being put in the early access route. Not because it takes less work, but because people would have just looked at them and asked: "yeah, they are just remastered, why all these early access shenanigans?"

I just know half of Steam discussion threads would have been about that.

      @inXile
      That's not how it works.

First, you have to do a bit due diligence before you click on the link. Then on each page, you have to go through the list of items, and check whether there are additional sections further down.

The key issue is that it was completely unnecessary.

I really appreciate this decision, I like that I don't feel like I'm being punished for not wanting to use Steam.

@Paul (excellent name) & @inhibit - We actually addressed that in a previous update, specifically:

"The Bard's Tale Trilogy remaster is a rebuild of the original games, including the visuals and code, so it's not as simple as us adding a graphics toggle key. Instead, we're devoting our efforts towards offering more improvements to the remastered elements. For example, 70% of the dungeons in The Bard’s Tale III use the same tileset, despite it being a dimension-hopping adventure, and that's something we're hoping to address more directly as part of the remastering efforts."

I'm happy as well, since I don't (and won't) use steam. Thank you. And a BIG thanks for keeping the trilogy on the radar. Although I'm very interested in BT4, the reality is I likely won't be able to run it very well on my old PC so I've been looking forward to the trilogy (w/ automap... graph paper days are long gone for me) and like others said, a big reason I backed the project. Very happy it looks to see the light of day.

    22. Otaku Hanzo on

Extremely happy with this announcement for two reasons. One, I really don't care for the direction Steam has been going the past few years and haven't been using it at all. Gog is the only way to fly. And, two, Early Access is a really crappy business practice. Glad you didn't give in to that. :)

    23. Jalister on

I'm happy to know the remasters will be on GOG, as all good games should be.

      Paul on

I would also love an option to keep the original graphics (or the best versions of graphics, I played on C64 growing up) but I understand the desire to spruce up the look for modern players. :)

    25. inXile entertainment 3-time creator on

@Keith and @Trevor - We're working on another backer update, this one regarding beta feedback. I'll ask if we can sneak in some remaster screenshots for you.

@Fredrik - The remasters are no small undertaking. I've told the Krome guys (repeatedly) that they should do a GDC Post-Mortem on the process because it has been a fascinating one. We were set with Early Access, but then as we really got down to evaluating it, we saw an opportunity to put out a better launch product *and* get our GOG players in the mix (we were never that thrilled leaving them out of the summer EA release).

@Quantomas - I'm not 100% sure I understand what you are saying, but I'm pretty sure you can just skip any steps you don't want and get right to the confirmation portion of the survey?

    26. Missing avatar

      Inhibit on

If there's some sort of project page for the re-master could you please link it?

Also! I'm curious if it'll have the option to play with the original graphics. I don't think I could take the disconcerting difference after putting so many hours into the original C64 :).

    27. Missing avatar

      Quantomas on

Unfortunately, I have to say this. It's not related to the product, but ...

So far I have resisted your calls to take the CrowdOx survey because I work very long hours. With release getting closer, I thought, ok, I need to do this. But wtf? 10 minutes spent on confirming my original selection without any gain. Could you please spare your customers this marketing nonsense? Why not indicate clearly that it is unnecessary and offer a straightforward option to skip this nonsense?

Thanks for the update and the work you've done so far. One of the good things about crowdfunded projects is that the creators can take the time to get it right without destroying their markets. I will always prefer a finished product that is released When It's Done [tm] to one that was pushed out the door half-finished to meet a schedule.

    30. Steve on

      I'm okay with this.

Looking forward to the old games and the new one. Makes me worried about cancelling the last minute (same day Bards Tale 1 was supposed to be released) if you are competent, i would imagine you would know weeks or months in advance you would not be a ready.

As I was looking forward to download and play on my long flight home I’m let down but of course not the end of the world. Would be nice with prior notice instead of last moment panic advise instead.

Anyhow, love old BT games (1&2 didn’t play 3 yet) and happy you try to bring them to life + a completely new one,

      Good luck!

Thanks for the update. Was hoping to get my grubby hands on it while the Mrs and kids are away but understand the reasoning ^^

Any further screenshots or sneak peaks would be very welcome in the meantime. It looks great.

Related to classic and remastered games. Are you going to release satirical Bard's Tale update on GOG? It never made it there, and in the Linux version emulated classic games were broken until you updated the game. But that update only came out on Steam for some reason. Can you push it out on GOG too please?
