Once again you have come through with a smashing first day. We are just 11 hours into the campaign and have already achieved 50% of Kickstarter goal for the Bard's Tale IV. I must also thank my many industry friends who have supported us through their social media campaigns. This list extends to our so called competition like Obsidian, Larian, Harebrained, Cryptozoic, Otherworld, Portalairum, Razer and so many others. The concept of game companies supporting each other in such a grand scale was unheard of many years ago. Our relationships have grown closer with you and the development community, the way it always should have been. Our 24 hour promotion for free copies of Wasteland 2, or The Witcher, or The Witcher 2 continues on until 6am PST tomorrow morning, so make sure to tell your friends before it runs out. With Wasteland 2, we're happy to have people enjoy the fruits of our first Kickstarter campaign as a company as we hope to keep these going for a long time to come.

Upcoming Prototype Footage!

We have some great surprises in store for you over the next month, the biggest of which is in engine footage for Bard's Tale IV. We're feverishly working to clean up a few more things, but it will be ready in the very near future. It's over 3 minutes long and should give you a good sense of what the world will feel like. I hope you are as impressed with it as I am, so look for it this week.

Tiers and Add-Ons

Our team is reading all of your comments and direct messages. Please keep them coming! We've seen a large demand for a tier that contains the Premier Collector's Edition as well as the Album style box, along with a few other goodies. For this reason, we added the $230 Tier, where you get both boxes as well as Alpha Access and all kinds of digital goodies. As well, we introduced our first Add-On, an extra digital copy of The Bard's Tale 4. This can be added on to any pledge of $20 or more. The details of which are on the bottom of the Kickstarter page.

Much More to Come!

This is just the beginning. Along with the video, we've got some great concept images and a few other surprises along the way that should please fans, both seasoned and new. We're so glad to have you along for the ride...

Also lending my support to the idea of a LP box add-on. It's a must-have!

@Brian Young: I second the idea of offering LP Boxes of BT4 and WL2 as add-ons. They'd get a place of honor right next to those from The Bard's Tale III and Wasteland (both for the C64) in my video game shrine. ;)

I'd like to echo others and ask if the LP box can be an Add-On. I've pledged at the Premium Early Bard level at $95, and to get the both I'd have to go to $230, which is currently out of my reach. But another $20-$40 dollars or so for the Album box won't break the bank.

    4. Descendent Studios on

We love Fargo - and his team - Bard's tale was personally one of my favorite games - looking forward to a new one.

There is quite a bit of confusion about the combat system and that may be holding some people back from pledging. In particular some more in depth explanation of the planned combat system would be good. Also, what exactly does it mean that you zoom out, when in combat? How far? Presumably this isn't some completely separate isometric representation or something?

Alexander: The community of developers has been around forever at the level of people, but it's a new thing for it to exist at the level of companies.

Stephane Theriault: Hi. Fancy seeing you here!

Troy Lee: I really hope the novellas capture some of that, while adding back the mostly absent lore.

@Frederik. I remember the hint book. In fact all 3 games had a hint book written in the same manner, as the story of a party progressing through the game.

My favorite was the first one. It was really well written and I actually felt for that party. The way it ended at top level of Mangar's tower was very sad and tragic.

Isn't there a super secret video game dev forum that is invite only? Hardly seems like this community of developers and fans is a new thing. Just sayin'. ;)

Hey guys, I'm really looking forward to BT IV! I just selected the Collector's album box, (BT III was the first game I ever bought - man, this brings back the memories!) but I'm very interested in getting the BT I-III digital novellas, strategy guide and maybe the cloth map as well. Will it be possible to buy them at a later point?
      Cheers!

We need the album as an add-on. Just like the digital version of the game is an add-on. $230 is just too much IMHO. I have no interest in Alpha Access (I want to play the finished game the way you envisioned it). Also while neat, I'm not interested in a music book.

If you can add-on a digital version of the game, you should be able to add-on a physical version of the game. That just makes sense...

Thanks! I backed you either way. :)

Thank you very much for continuing a legendary
      series, Brian.
Played them in my youth and absolutely loved it - well, besides
      that graph paper thing ;)
Congratulations to you and your team for a great start!

@Kristian Sörensen - my gosh, kudos to you playing
this on tape!! For financial reasons I've first bought a tape drive, too.
And bought a 1541 II just some days later - out of despair :=)

I had the original game on tape for the C64. The first time I stumbled on the 4*99 berserkers was a lot of fun. I randomly tried out the teleport spell and landed on top of them. It became a favourite xp-farming spot where you just prayed that the summoned dragon would breathe. Such a magnificent, long fight..

      Ah the memories..

@Joseph: Exactly my thoughts. In case there is no possibility of just adding the box and probably saving the shipping opening a second accound for an "interested family member" might be an option. I think my 3 year old daughter will like it.

      - digital guidebook (40$ pledge) isn't included in higher levels?
      - do you plan to offer as Add-on the album box (without game) or printed versions of the digital stuff: novella's, strategy guide, ...?

    19. Missing avatar

      snon on

Do you have this time some plans to make the physical versions available outside of the US without custom/vat issues (e.g. do you plan to find some partners around the world for distribution)?
Or how do you plan to handle pledge Level/Tier & real value of the included goodies?

      Will this be allowed:

"Our 24 hour promotion for free copies of Wasteland 2" -
Will this be the game only? At least on GOG there are 2 Editions listed (not the simple game)

    22. Stephane Theriault on

First thing I did when I bought the disk drive for my C64 was to buy Bard's Tale II: The Destiny Knight. Wasn't able to finish it, mainly because I didn't know a word of English. Then I got Thief of Fate when it came out, and it will always be one of the most memorable gaming experience of my life: more than 25 years later, I can still remember all the secrets and all the puzzles. And I did finish it.

So yeah, I'm pitching in for this one. But I do have a question about combat, because the "phase combat" described in the pitch really sounds like turn-based combat. Real phase combat is like what was in BTI-III and Wizardry 8, you select all your actions beforehand and they all play simultaneously.

Also, no spinner, please? Pretty please? They were so annoying.

    23. Paal Joachim Romdahl on

Awesome! Thanks for the update! I have pledged. I remember playing the original Bards Tale games on my Commodore Amiga many many years ago.

Is it possible I can keep my early bird collector 95 add the lp box level for 65? I'd rather do that then jump to 230.

    27. Gunga Din on

I also would rather have an Album version with the cloth map and digital goodies. Just remove the art book and make the price at $85 for early bard and $125 regular.

I'll try to fish out my copy tomorrow, but does anyone else recall the Bard's Tale III "hint book"? It read like a novella where the characters solved the puzzles on their own, with maps on alternating pages. Looking through the text for solutions was certainly easier than figuring it out in your own, but it still felt like a game rather than being fed answer.

I never got especially far into BT3, but I loved reading the tale.

    29. Brian Young on

I'll echo others below in saying that the $95 tier is perfect except for I'd rather have the LP box, not the premium box (I don't want both). $230 for both (and a few other extras I haven't an interest in) is a bit too much for me, I'm tending towards doing a $95 and a $65 (for the LP box) instead and gifting the extra game.

Would it be possible to offer the LP box (and only the box -- no manual, map, etc.) as say a $20 or $30 add-on? I'd love that. And, while you are at it, I'd love love love a Wasteland 2 LP box add-on to go on the shelf next to my original Wasteland LP box!

So many great things coming thanks to Kickstarter. I wanted to back at the early bird tier and get a deal, but my lust for the novellas and the like forced me into the $50 slot. :) Well done there. But it's still a great deal--I get so many extras!

Glad its doing well, I want the album style box and the physical map and manual plus some of the digital tiers like the novellas but don't want to pay 230$ asbi don't want both boxes. Any chance for a choose your box and goodies type thing?

    33. Nerdy Suit on

@Chet - you're talking about the free copy of WL2 if you back the first 24 hours, right? Yes, the top of the page says that WL2 can be received either via Steam or GOG (the Witcher games, however, are only through GOG).

    34. Chet on

The game we get by backing early can be gotten on Steam, right? I really want to gift my friend a Wasteland 2 copy.

You might want to consider making the strategy guide available as an addon. That is, if it's a full guide to the game. (It's not clear to me if it's a mini-guide with some basic stuff, or a full-blown guide.)

This campaign definitely had the most uphill battle out of your 3 but seems as if it will still be funded early allowing for stretch excitement. Must feel good having such a strong following. Updates sound exciting cant wait. Also your campaign concept art is almost always amazing so keep making those.

    41. Jason Hunter on

Thank you (and others) for attempting to reign in the madness in the industry by bringing focus back to producing games (and supporting them) that gamers want without all the gimmicks! I missed wasteland 2 Kickstarter (but purchased later, my son will enjoy the free copy though)...not making the same mistake!

You asked for feedback - I would like see a add-on for just the Bards Tale IV digital "goodies" (art, music, books, etc.). I really wanted the copy of Torment, but to get the extra goodies the only option is $200 tier, but already have all the extra games included in that so that is steep price for extras. Thanks!

    42. Stephen Mackie on

It would be awesome if there was a tier that included the Album box, a printed manual plus cloth map and the digital goodies (novellas, strategy guide, digital map, etc).

Currently the Album box doesn't include a cloth map or the digital goodies beyond a copy of the game itself.

But awesome work, glad to see it's going well! Bard's Tale 1 and Wastelands were childhood favourites of mine that began a lifelong love of video games, I'm glad to be able to give something back.

Was hoping the album box would be an add-on, 'cause spending an extra $130 for it and a songbook, and alpha access seems a little much, but whatever. I'm in for it.
