About this project

Gizmag " Coffee fans always appreciate a nicely brewed cup of java..."

Bloomberg "...artisanal coffee venture"

Askmen "But what if you could have pour-over coffee brewed by a machine? A machine can heat and pour water over a filter, so why not."

Business Insider "With little more than the push of a button, you've got great pourover coffee at home as easily as you would using that Keurig machine in the office."

LifeHacker "Right now the really pretty coffeemakers are starting to emerge..."

Gadgetify "Making great coffee at home does not have to be a hassle. Not when you have an Invergo coffee machine at home."

Coffee Brew Guides "...the effort is shown in the design and functionality"

What We Believe

Coffee is more than just a drink, it is a ritual, deeply engrained our culture. Every one has their own unique predilection and experiencing with it. We want to ameliorate the experience of brewing coffee and make it accessible to everyone.

The Science Behind Invergo

In addition to caffeine there are more than 1,000 chemical compounds that compose a cup of coffee, extracting these compounds to produce a great cup of coffee is challenging. The Specialty Coffee Association of America has research based standards for making a great cup of coffee and we used them as a base line to create Invergo.

Uniformity of Extraction

Conventional coffee machines don't extract coffee grounds uniformly, this is because they use a small static shower head. This shower head trickles water on center of the coffee grounds, resulting an inconsistent extraction with no agitation. Invergo solves both of these problems through the use of the patent-pending Autospout; which uses a single stream of water that agitates the coffee grounds and is poured in a dynamic hypotrochoid pattern to evenly saturate the coffee grounds.

Brewing Temperature

Perhaps the most important variable in coffee brewing is the temperature of the water and todays coffee machines exhibit a wide range of temperatures while brewing and almost none ever get hot enough. Invergo on the other hand uses a computer controlled temperature sensor called a proportional integral derivative controller. This controller insures that the water will stay ± 1°F the temperature it is set at, keeping it at the optimal temperature throughout the brewing cycle.

Optimal Extraction

The amount of compounds dissolved in coffee is called total dissolved solids. Too little and your coffee will be week and watery, too much and it will be bitter and too strong. Kuerigs for example use a small amount of coffee and disproportional large about of water, this results in a cup of coffee that is extremely weak and watery and underdeveloped. Invergo uses the specialty coffee association of america gold cup ratio to guarantee that the coffee being brewed will be optimal.

Features

Autospout water delivery

Conventional coffee machines don't saturate all of the coffee grounds evenly; resulting in a bitter taste. The dual axis Autospout however ensures all coffee grounds are evenly saturated. Invergo produces a coffee that is evenly extracted, clear and bright.

Flexibility between Single Serving, a Carafe and other Apparatuses

There are a variety of pour-over apparatuses from Chemexes to Hario V60s. All produce a slightly different cup of coffee and Invergo accommodates all of them by the use of a removable magnetic pour-over holder. Also the magnetic drip tray can be removed allowing for taller travel mugs. Invergo bridges the gap between single-serve and drip machine. It allows you to brew from 5 oz to 50 oz all, using the same compact machine.

Cold-Brew Coffee

The cold brew function turns off the heating element and doses small amounts of water over long period time. The result: a cup of coffee that is sweeter than hot brewed coffee.

Touch Screen Interface With Programable Brewing Cycles

For coffee enthusiasts who want complete control over the brewing process, Invergo implements the ability for the brewer to set how the water will pulsate. Invergo stores these settings so duplicating the perfect cup is easy. Plus, Invergo has a timer, so you can program your brewer to make your cup of coffee at a certain time each morning.

Benefits

Time Saving

Invergo is the quickest way to brew coffee. This is because it uses a proprietary instant water heater that eliminates any warm up time. The closest match a Kuerig is only able to brew coffee fast because it uses pressure to brew, meaning Keurigs are actually brewing abysmal espresso not coffee.

Economical, Consumer Friendly and Environmentally Conscience

  • Invergo is the most affordable way to brew coffee because it allows you to choose how much you want to brew by the ounce, from a cup to a 8 cup carafe.
  • Keurigs coffee is brewed through a plastic "K-cup" which is expensive, equivalent to $50 a pound of coffee (you could buy the most exotic freshly roasted coffee for that price). "K-cups" are also not recyclable and are harmful the environment. Additionally the upcoming Keurig 2.0 will feature anti-consumer DRM meaning you will be locked out of using unlicensed pods, much like a printer ink, which ironically the coffee from a Keurig tastes like.
  • Drip coffee requires you to make a carafe, some of which you will likely toss awayy.
  • Cafés are convenient but it is difficult find one that serves great coffee and it is becoming increasingly expensive.

Product Development

Ideation: The idea for this project was born out of necessity. There are simply no good automatic coffee machines that can make a single-serving or a carafe.

Design: After developing a solution, we started sketching, building models and prototypes. This allowed us to further refine the details of the machine and ensure a beautiful design that can proudly be displayed on countertops.

Develop: This is the current step in the process. We a have a fully functional prototype and are translating it into a product that can be manufactured. This involves quite a bit of work but, fortunately, nearly all of the engineering and design have been accounted for.

Production: This is the next step in the process, it involves tooling, setting a supply chain for all parts and certification.

  • July 2014 We will begin by creating the electronics systems with all the finalized production parts. We will make sure all the parts work in unison and that they function properly.
  • August 2014 After all the internal systems are translated to a production worthy design we will begin creating all the plastic parts by rapid prototyping them. This will be done to ensure that all the parts fit within the casing correctly and that everything functions as it should. Once the pre production prototype is complete we will send off the final designs to be tooled.
  • September 2014 Tooling is the next process, this step includes the creation of injection molds and other manufacturing components. Also during this time any sourced parts will be secured for our supply chain.
  • October 2014 By this time we will have a fully functional production prototype. This prototype will then be sent off for certification for home use. During this time we will also create all the packaging and instruction. (Any problems during this process may lead to small design changes.)
  • November Once certification is completed, we will conduct our final production verification and start mass production.
  • December 2014 The final step is importing Invergo, and shipping it to your doorstep.

Risks and challenges

Almost all the final details of the engineering, design and internal components have been developed. The next stage is securing a supply chain, all the internal components and deciding on a manufacturer. Small hiccups in the supply chain and manufacturing are inevitable and could cause delays.

From the beginning of development, we at Invergo have been conscious of certification compliance and general safety. In accordance with these safety regulations we must submit our product to a certification agency guaranteeing its compliance. Successful production depends on rigorous testing and approval is contingent upon this certification. This contingency could result in small design tweaks that may delay production.
