October 9 is the beginning of the last 25 days of our campaign, and we are celebrating by showing 1 new design each day! We will add them below at the bottom of the shoe options, post them every day on Facebook and recap once a week in updates.
PRINTED, SEWN AND ASSEMBLED ON-DEMAND IN USA
With 20 years of design, engineering and manufacturing experience in the conventional mass production system, we have created a patented shoe system that
• opens up creative expression in style and technology
• sets a new bar for environmental sustainability
The low-down is this - we created a modular shoe construction platform that leverages digital techniques and can be built on-demand for the consumer.
Individual components are made from single-source sustainable materials and are assembled in 90 seconds to meet a customer's request. This bypasses those monolithic shoe assembly factories which use toxic glues and ship boxes of air halfway around the world. Our technology allows us to pursue many more fashion, fit and ecological advances than the big brands can - while still being competitive with them on price.
We've also unlocked unlimited creative expression using digital integration tools, and created the first LYF Cyclable shoe.
MAKE YOUR FASHION STATEMENT! Using digital textile printing from our friends at Spoonflower, we create shoe designs with artists, or even budding artists. This unfolds the ability for free expression in your style. You can even design your own (see "Design Your Own" further down on the page).
Our Kickstarter collection highlights prints by some of our favorite artists:
The Hacker reward option includes the basic kit of pieces and instructions on how WE use it and how to insert into the shoe.
With a modular performance plate, comfort top and heel strike components, we provide a three-part footwear suspension system built to support you in comfort.
If you haven’t walked in cork, you ought too. They are super light and provide much better resilience and support than that foamy sneaker stuff. Our cork mostly comes from recycled wine bottles.
Our soft breathable uppers are made from all-natural fibers both inside and outside of our shoes. We use an all-dry printing process by our friends at Spoonflower to minimize ink waste and provide precision cut lines for sewing each size.
Our shoes feature natural fiber tops, compostable bottoms, and cork insoles from wine bottles. And since we don't use glue, we incentivize to get them back so they can be unsnapped, LYF Cycled within our own supply chain and become the next pair of shoes. We calculate a 49% reduction in carbon footprint alone. You can see details on how we measure sustainability here.
Wrap a gift - or yourself! - up in this awesome designer gift wrap! We say there are 5 options to choose from, but we couldn't narrow it down that far, so we're thinking we'll have 9 options! Swatches are shown here. These swatches show a piece of the design, but are not true to size and have some of the overall image cut off, so the finished wrap will be a surprise to you too!
Spoonflower is producing our prints for this campaign. They are a local success story and heroes for us in the new age of manufacturing. They seem to like what we're doing to!
A lot of people have come together to make LYF Shoes happen!
FOUNDERS/INSTIGATORS: Aly & Beth Khalifa
The vision and years of work to get here have happened at Gamil Design, a product design and branding firm owned by Aly and Beth Khalifa in Raleigh, NC. Aly and the team have worked on the idea of modular systems and on-demand techniques applied to shoemaking for over 10 years. All of the hard work has been following the overarching objective to fuse the ideas of small runs and custom fashion choices with sustainable materials and good-for-the-earth manufacturing processes.

Impress Coffee Brewer! YAY! Almost exactly a year ago, we had a wonderfully successful Kickstarter campaign to launch our Impress Coffee Brewer. The Impress is in production now and we are so excited to ahve been able to see a Kickstarter project turn into a viable product on the market.
There are numerous challenges in making this project come to fruition. However, our 20 years of experience in design, engineering and manufacturing has allowed us to gain considerable experience in overcoming these challenges and to develop an extensive network of qualified vendors and professionals.
We have already produced and walked in Generation 1 molds. The Generation 2 designs are "productionized" and overcome our initial manufacturing and assembly challenges.
We've successfully been through the Kickstarter process before with the Impress Coffee Brewer. Our biggest lesson has been to learn which countries present shipping obstacles when sending rewards. This time around we plan to limit international shipping promises in international pledges. We plan to handle them on a case-by-case basis after the campaign has completed.
Finally, we see a challenge in having people understand our intentions. The Digital Cobbler model is about fusing the best of: the globalized supply chain, the dexterity of new manufacturing tools, and the many benefits of assembling shoes as close to the consumer as possible. We hope to build Digital Cobbler shops in many international markets leveraging local resources while still benefitting from molds and components developed in other parts of the LYF marketplace. This is different than a "100% Made in USA" approach.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The most expensive and intensive part of this project is making new molds. Although we have designed a fabulous women's shoe, we cannot do everything at once. However as soon as we complete the men's project, you can bet that the women's line will be next. For now, please note we have scaled down the men's sizing so we can accommodate smaller feet. It's not ideal for fitting women properly, but it's the best we can afford right now.
