The Press Is Impressed!
Impress Coffee is a patent-pending design that helps you brew your perfect cup of coffee in just 3 minutes. The one-cup-at-a-time handcrafted brewing process (without paper filters, electric mechanisms, risky balancing acts or fussy coils and plungers) results in a clean, yet full-bodied cup that has captured all the flavor of the beans and nothing else.
The Impress Coffee design is almost complete. We just need to make a few final revisions from our last prototype, invest in tooling and get moving on a pilot run. To thank you for joining in on the fun and being one of the first people in the world to own an Impress, we'll throw in some incentives, like Impress Coffee brewers, delicious coffee beans - and stickers!!
3 Easy Pieces - No Mechanical Plungers & No Mess!
The Impress is a 2-piece nested press with a to-go cup lid that brews a full-flavored great cup of coffee in 3 minutes or less. After placing fresh grounds in the outer cup and pouring in hot water, you let it brew to your taste—we suggest 3 minutes (our coffee experts have tested it and we agree). Then, simply push the inner cup (reverse-flow filter inspired by the portafilter) all the way down, and clean full bodied coffee flows up into the vessel as the grounds get pushed down. That's it - you're done! Put a lid on it and go. The grounds stay at the bottom and out of your coffee until you are ready to pull the inner cup filter back out to clean it. The filter technology keeps the grounds from brewing any further after the coffee is pressed, so you only get the 3 minute brew you intended, even if the coffee stays put for a while longer!
• PIECES: double-walled outer cup, nesting inner cup with removable filter basket, to-go lid
• SIZE: 6" tall, 3.375" diameter (approximate)
• VOLUME: recommended 13 oz (max = 14 oz)
• MATERIALS: 304 Stainless Steel, food-grade Silicone
• MICRO-FILTER: 304 Stainless Steel, removable for washing
• CARE: Top-rack dishwasher safe
The outer cup is double-walled stainless steel for maximum heat retention while remaining cool to the touch. Early testers have consistently been impressed by how long their coffee stays hot – many of them pour their coffee into their favorite mugs just so they can cool it off.
The inner stainless steel cup is designed as a reverse flow filter that is pressed down after the appropriate brewing time and nests inside the outer cup. It is inspired by the portafilter, so it allows you some flexibility with the grind size.
Clean & Full Flavored Coffee
The Impress is uniquely designed so that brewing stops completely once the inner and outer cups are fully nested. The tiny filter holes work well with any grind size, and the filter traps the grounds below the finished coffee so it can’t overbrew or let sediment in. No more overbrewed bitterness or muddy sediment of traditional press pots! With a stainless steel construction and filter, you can rest assured you will only be tasting the flavor of the coffee itself.
Take It To-Go
Because of the double-walled outer cup and nested inner cup, the Impress is a triple-insulated to-go vessel full of delicious coffee. Arrive at work and coffee is still as hot, clean and full flavored as when you left home. You might even decide to share some of your coffee with a co-worker. The Impress makes 14oz of coffee, enough for 2 people to share.
Cleaning is Easy
Because the Impress is made of simple parts rather than intricate coils, filters, mechanisms and plungers, the grounds and oils can't get trapped in little crevices. Just knock out the grounds and give a quick rinse to be ready for your next delicious cup.
A few years ago, we found a bit of time to dive into the world of fine tea and explore the need for a good one-cup tea infuser. After a few years worth of tea times, we were able to bring The Teastick, a one-cup tea infuser, to market. We were simply floored, and humbled, at how well received the design was and how much people loved the simplicity, as well as the great cup of tea The Teastick infused. Since the day it was released, we have been asked if we could create a one-cup-at-a time coffee maker.
Of course, coffee and tea are very different, so a coffee product had to be a brand new concept. It took us a few more years after the Teastick to find the time to dedicate to coffee, but we LOVE coffee, so it was a sacrifice worth making.
Being very regular coffee drinkers, we naturally had a number of different coffee brewers at the office, from electric drip brewers to pour-over options to press pots, and various inventer-versions of all of the above. Although many of them made a nice cup of coffee, there was still something missing. Press pots are known to overbrew the coffee and get muddy as it sits there. They are also difficult to clean when finished. Pour-overs have to work with a different mug and need a paper filter. And most of the inventer versions just felt, well, too inventery. AND, none of them kept the coffee insulated or worked as a brewer and to-go vessel in one. These points became our design criteria. With the prototype of Impress Coffee, we now know (if we didn't before) that there's nothing better than a clean, full-flavored cup of piping hot coffee that stays clean, full-flavored and piping hot all day long.
Launching with Kickstarter
We are community-minded and community-driven people. To find an online tool that cultivates and grows our community is exciting and intriguing to us. We see Kickstarter as a great way to help us launch the Impress. If we are fortunate enough to realize our goal, we will quickly move forward with a pilot run of the Impress Coffee brewer. If we are even more fortunate and surpass our goal, we will increase our production quantity, add new colorways and patterns to the outer cup and get started on a multi-cup version. Please help us make the world a better coffee place one Impress at a time. Thank you.
Risks and challenges
The major challenges of any pilot run of a product is finalizing the product and working with the manufacturer to make sure the production is as the design intended. Fortunately, we do this every day for our clients. Aly Khalifa, the owner of Gamil Design and designer of Impress Coffee, is not only a product designer, but an engineer as well, with 20+ years of experience working with factories on tooling, sampling and manufacturing. We have already determined an appropriate factory and have received prototypes and samples from them to prove that they are equipped to handle the job. We have also worked with client product launches as well as with our own product, The Teastick, to launch, process and fulfill orders at first adopter stage, regular every day times and media blitz bumps. We will be ready and excited to fulfill the awesome rewards from this kickstarter campaign.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
