We are Paolo and Mike, two longtime friends who, in spite of great geographical distance and very different careers, wrote a musical together, Into the Sun, set in World War I.
We are very excited that our show will participate in the 2015 New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) as part of the Developmental Reading Series. Into the Sun will have three performances in July at NYC’s Studio Theatre, two blocks from Times Square!
Being invited to NYMF is a dream come true, as it's a one-of-a-kind opportunity for a new show. With musical theatre professionals making up much of the audience, it's our best chance to showcase our work and generate interest. We want to do this right.
We’ve assembled an amazing team to produce the reading:
- Our Director is Joe Barros, Founder and Artistic Director of NY Theater Barn and currently the Associate Director of Gigi on Broadway.
- Our Music Director is Drew Wutke - For Tonight (Goodspeed/NYMF), Into the Woods (Fiasco Theater), MISCAST Gala 2015 (MCC).
- Our General Manager and longtime adviser is Gwyn Osnos, a Producer of Wanda’s World.
As with all arts projects, one of our challenges is financing the show. While NYMF covers some of the expenses, we need to raise funds in order to help pay for rehearsal space, festival fees, and the cast and crew who will put on the show. Please consider contributing to our campaign. No amount is too small (or too large)! We would also be grateful if you would share this project via your favorite social media platforms and forward a link to anyone who is interested in the arts, musical theatre, poetry, history, World War I, etc. Thank you for your support!
Into the Sun follows the saga of three young English friends who go off to the trenches of World War I. It’s the story of their families, their loved ones, and of the way the war changes each individual and their generation. The play is loosely based on the lives of the War Poets and the lyrics of a number of songs are poems by Wilfred Owen, Rupert Brooke and Sigfried Sassoon, that we have set to music. We have prepared a short video that highlights the main themes and gives you a sample of the music we wrote for the show:
Into the Sun has already received some encouraging feedback from readers and listeners -- "Into the Sun is a poignant show whose main characters will elicit the sympathy of an audience." "I cared about the four main characters." "The music is refreshingly diverse with many different and pleasantly surprising influences.” The songs are "engaging, musical, and very clear in their storytelling” “This could be THE musical about World War I” – so we are excited to see it performed and developed further. Again, thank you for your help!
Risks and challenges
From a logistical point of view, the biggest risk is the production running over budget. While NYMF covers some of the expenses, we expect the festival will cost us about $12,000, and we would like to raise half of that ($6000) through this Kickstarter campaign. If successful we will be in a much better position to accommodate unforeseen expenditures, something that is apparently a regular occurrence when putting on such a performance.
From the artistic point of view, the main challenge is that we are new to the world of musical theatre. We will need to learn how to work with theatre professionals and how to adjust the script and music so that it works on stage. In some cases, these revisions will be hard for us since they may entail changing songs and plot turns that we've spent a long time crafting. And of course, we want to make sure that we have a good audience for the three performances of Into the Sun. It is difficult to generate interest in new musicals, so we are working hard to reach out to a potential audience, both of theatre professionals and the general public.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
