About

Enjoy the moment-in-between.

The Interlude Chair let's you do what you love. It supports you while you explore and keeps you on the move for longer. Interlude helps you pause and take a moment to rest and recharge, wherever the day finds you.

The Interlude Chair was collaboratively developed by Roland Haertl and a team of industrial designers and engineers. It has been road-tested on trips to 10 countries, over more than 4 years of design refinement.

Interlude is made out of aluminum for lightweight durability, injection-molded plastics for comfort, high quality rubber for durable feet, and metal fasteners for stability and security.

The unique design weighs less than 3 pounds and can support approximately 250 pounds. It extends to two standard chair heights (17” & 22”), which we think is pretty cool.

Interlude’s compact size makes it easy to take with you. Designed with travelers in mind, it fits into a standard backpack or carry-on luggage. You can also just use the included strap.

Interlude is light and durable. It weighs less than 3 pounds and is made of high quality materials for strength, comfort and stability.

The seat unfolds quickly with one pull. Legs slide smoothy and securely to your choice of two heights.

Closing is just as easy. Just push up the double legs towards the handle, and the seat unlocks smoothly.

The Interlude Chair is tested, tooled, and ready for production as we launch this campaign. With your contribution we can collect the funding to place our first order with our contract manufacturer and make Roland's project a reality. The first chairs will be shipping just 40 days after the campaign ends.

This is Interlude's (and my) story.

While walking the streets of Barcelona on a trip to Spain in 2013, my right leg went numb. It was also quite painful. I had to quickly find a place to sit down, and could not walk comfortably again for many minutes. Pain and numbness returned after fewer than 50 more yards, and for the remainder of the trip I had to move in short intervals to minimize the pain.

I returned home and began to search for a lightweight travel aid that would allow me to sit when needed, and could be carried with ease. I found a promising option, took it on my next trip, but discovered many shortcomings. This chair is too much work, I thought. It should relieve my burden, not add to it. I began to build a wish list, and with the help of a wonderful team, Interlude was born.

Now, our prototypes have traveled to over 10 countries. A myriad of museums, parks, airports, bus stations, hotels, conference halls and outdoor events, you-name-it, we have probably tried it! We’ve had the opportunity to share the product with people of various ages and mobility needs, and have used this feedback to make decisions about size, portability, comfort, and features.

What has fueled me throughout this journey is the enthusiasm of curious on-lookers inquiring about Interlude and trying the seat for the first time. People ask where I’ve taken the chair, and imagine out loud about their own adventures, or how the product could help a family member or friend. It’s exciting to see that spark, and to know the product addresses real needs (and not only my wish list).

My ardent hope is that Interlude becomes a trusted companion in your travels near and far. That it supports your day’s adventures, provides you with a rest when needed, and extends your time doing what you love.

Thank you for your support, and happy trails!

Risks and challenges

Our team has worked very hard to overcome all the risks and challenges during the development process of our travel chair. Since 2014, we have been through numerous prototypes and simulations. We can proudly say that we have addressed and resolved all known problems in the current version of the product.

Over the past two years we have worked extensively with a design and engineering team in Portland, Oregon, to deliver a refined product experience to our backers. Starting with the product, and ending in the packaging and delivery.
