Welcome!

Interlace is a program of two contemporary dance works performed by casts of all women. The pieces lay the foundation for a space of sharing, healing and community by exploring the unique and collective experiences of women through their journeys, embodied through dance.

Thank you for being here family, friend, acquaintance or stranger. We are Berit and Elly and are the creators of the upcoming dance project titled, Interlace, a contemporary dance performance at The Southern Theater in Minneapolis held August 22-24. We have been awarded a slot in the Southern Partnership Program and are grateful for this opportunity to produce and share our work with audiences in the Twin Cities.

Why are we passionate about this project?

Like any other art form, whether it be painting, sculpture, photography, music, literature, cinema, or the art of science, contemporary dance is a performance medium through which ideas are shared and communicated. Similar to the other forms of art mentioned above, dance is a language that has been part of humanity throughout history.

The creation processes for both works featured in Interlace provide a platform for the involved artists to share their individual experiences as women. We are passionate to highlight these artists as a way to open up space for conversation and share their stories and experiences through movement.

Who are we?

Berit Ahlgren

Native to St. Paul, MN, Berit Ahlgren gained her foundational dance training from Minnesota Dance Theater. She was a founding member of TU Dance under the artistic directorship of Toni Pierce-Sands and Uri Sands, performing with the company between 2006—2016. Receiving Metropolitan Regional Art Council’s Next Step Grant in 2011, Ahlgren had the opportunity to study the Gaga Movement Language in Tel Aviv, and moved to Israel to pursue a teacher certification between 2011-2012. Ahlgren obtained her MFA in Dance from NYU/Tisch School of the Arts in 2016, and has been performing, choreographing, and teaching between the Twin Cities and New York City ever since.

Elly Hollenhorst

Elena Hollenhorst studied at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance in Jerusalem, Israel and received her BFA in dance from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Originally from St. Paul, MN, Elena is currently based between the Twin Cities and Tel Aviv where she is studying Gaga and other movement techniques. Elena received professional training from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Henny Jurriëns Studio, and Vertigo Dance Company. She performed professionally with Jerusalem Dance Theater, Black Label Movement, and many freelance projects both stateside and abroad.

About the Performance: Interlace

Interlace is a program of two contemporary dance works performed by casts of all women. The pieces lay the foundation for a space of sharing, healing and community by exploring the unique and collective experiences of women through their journeys, embodied through dance.

About the pieces being presented:

At Least, At Last is a contemporary dance born out of many discussions with many women around many examples of gender-based marginalization. While unique in each experience shared, a collective strength is developed from individual feelings of injustice and inferiority, all the while seeking hope and forgiveness. Created by Berit Ahlgren in collaboration with the dancers.

When We Met Under the Juniper Tree is a compilation of women's stories twisting together to explore themes of abrupt change, group dynamics, regeneration, and women's innate connection to the earth. Told through contemporary dance, the piece is a physical  exploration in the power of personal story. Created by Elena (Elly) Hollenhorst in collaboration with the dancers.

What's our schedule?

Rehearsals run throughout July and August.  We have roughly 26 hours of rehearsal time scheduled per piece adding up to 52 hours total.

Risks and challenges

We have carefully calculated our risks and we trust in the generosity of our friends, family, and online community; YOU.
