2.4SINK by Instruments of Things® is a wireless Eurorack interface that is designed to allow novel, meaningful and experimental interactions with existing modular synthesizers and analog music instruments.
2.4SINK allows wireless connections to our branded, high precision Movesense® motion sensors with low latency to create highly expressive and unique stage performances. Additionally 2.4SINK is compatible with Open Sound Control (OSC) and Bluetooth® MIDI to be compatible with a wide range of applications (e.g. Max, Pure Data, SuperCollider), sensors and maker technologies (e.g. Arduino). The Holon.ist iOS app can be used without additional configuration to gather environmental data (e.g. heartbeat, weather) and control your Eurorack system. Built-in LFOs and 16 multimode outputs cover all kinds of control signals.
The open interface of the 2.4SINK module offers experimental ways of interacting, which in combination with all features leads to a powerful unprecedented modular experience.

You can use one of the three axis each connected motion sensor provides to control your Eurorack system. For example roll axis triggers drums, yaw axis changes attack and quantized oscillator pitch, and pitch axis to modulate LP filter cutoff)
Instruments of Things branded Movesense® Motion Sensors
Our branded Movesense® sensors are powered by our customized firmware adapted for musical applications (e.g. low latency and high precision). It includes 9 Degrees-Of-Freedom sensor fusion generating roll, pitch and yaw angles from gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetometer. To avoid quantization errors a custom Bluetooth® LE transmission protocol supporting floating point numbers is used. If no client (i.e. 2.4SINK) is connected, the firmware goes to sleep mode to save battery power. Mapping and scaling of sensor values can be done in the web app CV configuration section.

Open Sound Control (OSC)
2.4SINK offers fixed OSC address paths to control the outputs via any OSC client (e.g. Max, Pure Data, SuperCollider). The output function can be changed during runtime. The incoming values must be normalized between [0, 1] in unipolar mode and [-1, 1] in bipolar mode. To ease the usage of OSC via Wi-Fi, zeroconf network discovery (e.g. Bonjour) can be used to find the OSC server IP and port. The OSC address scheme is as follows: <Bank>/<Output>/<Function> <Value>.

=> Via OSC 2.4SINK can be used with a wide range of applications, mobile apps and maker technologies (e.g. Arduino) to interface Eurorack systems and analog music instruments wirelessly!
2.4SINK can be controlled via wireless MIDI controllers, which are compatible to Bluetooth® LE MIDI. Control Change (CC) mappings can be set in the web app. Note On/Off messages have fixed mappings starting from C on output A1.

2.4SINK offers 16 x 12 bit outputs with bicolor LEDs where each can be configured in unipolar mode (0V to +10V), bipolar mode (-5V to +5V) or gate/trigger mode (0V to +5V) without losing sampling depth. This is useful to make use of a wide range of sensor data. For example, for motion controlled envelopes, unipolar mode is recommended. For LFO style signals, bipolar mode is recommended. To trigger drums or external envelope generators, gate/trigger mode is recommended. The outputs and sensor values can be easily configured and scaled via the built-in web app.
2.4SINK offers built-in LFOs with the following waveforms:
Depending on the output mode, the LFOs are unipolar or bipolar except the clock LFO which is always between 0V and +5V. If an output is used as a LFO, the incoming (sensor) value corresponds to the frequency. For Bluetooth® devices, the output function can be set in the built-in web app. For OSC, the output functions are encoded in the address path and can be changed during runtime.
Built-in Web App
The built-in web app gives users total and easy control over the module. Wi-Fi can be configured in Access Point or Client mode. Discovered and supported Bluetooth® LE devices (i.e. our branded Movesense® sensors or Bluetooth® LE MIDI compatible devices) can be coupled under Bluetooth® LE configuration section with a single click. Afterwards, the available sensor values can be mapped and scaled in the CV configuration section for each output. The settings are persisted in the internal flash memory.
Furthermore, firmware updates including bug fixes and new features can be uploaded and applied via Wi-Fi. The firmware binaries will be published on our website in the future.

Compatible with Holon.ist iOS App
2.4SINK can be used with the Holon.ist iOS app without additional configuration via OSC.
→ Holon.ist uses environmental information and integrated iPhone / Apple Watch sensors to control music. With this app you can create your own instruments and musical rules for places, sports, games, or anything involving movement and micromovements, even the beat of your own heart by using the app in combination with an Apple Watch.

Instruments of Things® is a music-tech StartUp based in the north of Germany, Kiel, founded in 2018. The three founders Henrik, David and Niko are connected by a strong passion for electronic music, especially made with modular synthesizers.
Henrik is the head of the team who discovered his passion for audio technologies in his early youth. Since then, he kept on working on free time projects and luckily found his mentor Robert Manzke during his studies, who is an absolute synth nerd himself. Together with Robert Manzke, he invented the CTAG multi-channel audio system, which is compatible with Bela. Henrik is active as an artist and is member of the Downtempo band Oberheimer and plays drums in a cross-over punk band as well.
David is the design guru who loves to create physical product designs as well as being deep dived into user experiences and interaction possibilities for electronic music instruments. He’s also responsible for most of the creative representations of the projects e.g. on the website or social media channels.
Niko is the expert for the numbers and sales. After looking for a finance person, which suits our need for open minded thinking and celebrating electronic music culture, Niko luckily realized that selling music-tech products is much more fun than selling insurances.
2.4SINK is their first product which is furthermore representative for the specialization of Instruments of Things® – the development of novel interfaces for further thought-out possibilities of using electronic music instruments.

Risks and challenges
2.4SINK is a fully working Eurorack module and already tested with several, external beta testers. All beta testers were happy and decided to keep the module. Furthermore, 2.4SINK is showcased at the Superbooth 2019 exhibition for modular synthesizers in Berlin, so people can try out the module.
The final hardware design was successfully tested and is ready for production at a manufacturer in the EU. We already planned the full production and can't wait to begin:)
The head of the team and developer Henrik Langer has several years of experience in system and hardware engineering. Together with Prof. Dr. Robert Manzke he invented the CTAG multichannel audio systems CTAG FACE and BEAST, proving his expertise in this domain.
Still, as always for hardware production in large quantites delays could occur due to several reasons (e.g. delay of component dealers). To minimize these risks and to guarantee best quality, we decided to manufacture 2.4SINK in Germany. Thus we can always personally check the state of production without high effort. Furthermore, we calculated production time including safety buffers to cover these risks.
