Shipping / Tracking Update

Posted by Conor McGoey (Creator)

First off I apologize. I know that a lot of you are annoyed and frustrated that you haven't received your game yet. I am honestly so sorry it has taken this long. I have never had issues like this compounding on each other and I am managing them as efficiently as possible. Getting these games to you has been, and continues to be, my top priority. I plan to release more games through Kickstarter and pissing off my supporters is the last thing I want to do.

"Send From China" has the remaining orders and is pre-paid to get them to you. The "shipping notifications" has been rectified so you will receive an email when the game is sent out. If you haven't received a notification yet, you will, please continue to be patient as they are supposed to be shipping any time!

Background of delays:

  • The increased production time of the PVC cards meant that I had to air-ship product to Europe for EU fulfilment and Essen (which is booked a year in advance).
  • It also meant that I changed fulfilment plans to get everyone else their games in what I thought was the fastest way possible - cut off the long ocean freight and air-ship direct from China (after getting recommendations for Send From China).
  • Unfortunately on the EU side, the manufacturer only put 720 units on the pallet, not the 1,000 I asked for. And of those units they put nearly half retail versions which doesn't help me for backer fulfilment (95% backed premium).
  • Meanwhile the rest of the production was  finished but they did not ship it out as the manufacturer was preparing for, and then attending Essen. (This annoyed me but ended up "working out," as I asked them to check all the orders after seeing some games in the EU were missing cards.)
  • I offered Essen pick up for any backers going and expected the EU order the ship once the craziness of Essen died down. (I had no way of knowing the truckers and warehouse staff would take a break, and get sick delaying these orders.)
  • Once the units at the manufacturer were checked those for fulfilment were immediately moved to the fulfilment centre where I believed they would send out quickly (as advertised). Apparently there were issues with the backer list uploading and they had to re-submit it multiple times. (And then check that submissions weren't duplicated!)
  • Once this was done they logged and "prepared for the units" meaning printing labels, and planning packaging. It is a pre-pay system and it took a while trying to get my financial institution to work with the wire details. It took so long that I transferred funds via Paypal which they immediately used for "storage and packing" (don't get me started on paying storage for games that are supposed to be shipping.) So I had to transfer more funds around and through the accounts as the wire details still were not working (Look into CNAPs code for Chinese banking and explain to me why my side needs it, but their side can't tell me what the number is - not even a direct call to anyone's bank!!! Oh and I know what it IS, I just don't know why they don't!)
  • With the details uploaded and cash in the account I was confident the items would move while I was preparing for and at PAX (another reason I couldn't offer PAX pick up - They had them and the shipping details for so long I thought they would be in the mail. And "cancelling" an order after it was packed isn't possible - again not sure why it's an option if it doesn't work.)
  • I have had numerous lengthy emails trying to get more information and confirmed shipping timelines but I get answers like "We are sparing no efforts to get them out asap. You know December is the peak seson for Xmas."
  • I finally heard back from my account manager's supervisor and she "explained" why more funds were disappearing than items shipping, and that the remaining items would be shipping as fast as possible.
  • The ocean freight is still in transit, so so far this option has been "faster" but still very disappointing, and not a route I will use in the future.

I do care what you think. I do care about your Kickstarter experience. I hope that those of you who have joined me on previous campaigns can attest to the heart that I put into this. I have not paid myself a dime for my work. I have not wasted any of your pledge money.  I have not taken your support for granted. And I am not trying to make excuses. I just want you to know that I am trying to get you your game as fast as possible, and this has been keeping me up late trying to communicate "clearly" with China. Every message and comment (positive and negative), I read and take very personally, and I am sorry if I haven't responded to yours yet, there is just a flood of them.

I thank you for being patient this long, and I trust that once you have the game in your hands it will be worth the wait. If any of you get your game and are still unhappy with me or the game please email me at and I will refund your pledge.

I'm sorry this shipping fiasco has tainted your KS experience with me. I have learned from it, and it will not happen again. I can only hope the quality of the game and your experience playing Gorus Maximus will cheer you up, and help you to forget this painful wait.

      Mine arrived today (Devon, UK).

      Just in time for Christmas!

Looks amazing, production is so over the top for a trick taking game, love it! Those gold gilded cards :D

Haven't had a chance to play yet but it will be the first one we play on Christmas Day.

    2. John Mowery

It happens. If someone gets angry over things you can't control that is their problem. Only problem I sort of have is i got my tracking email but when I click to track it its in Chinese. Lol. Owell. Looking forward to the game.

People are getting annoyed about this? Honestly, in the grand scheme of Kickstarter this barely registers as a delay. You've been up front with us the whole way which builds you up a lot of goodwill and I for one don't mind that it's taken a little longer than anticipated to get the game into my hands.

Looking forward to playing. I got my dispatch note the other day :)

Hey Conor, thank you for the honest update. I have backed many Kickstarter campaigns that experienced delays but few have been so open in their communication, or as fun to follow, as yours. I look forward to playing Gorus Maximus when it gets here.

Have a happy & safe holidays! (no more injuries please)

    7. Warchild on

Transparency and honesty truly absolves all sins. Thanks for your hard work on our behalf.

It’s all good. As others have said, you’ve been very frequent and transparent with your updates, which I feel is the most important thing. I’m still waiting on a game I was supposed to receive in Jan, so if a few weeks is all I have to wait, I don’t even blink an eye. Especially given your communication, passion, and previous track record. I will gladly back from you in the future. Enjoy the holidays!

      Ian McNear on

All good Conor! You've been very quick to send out updates weekly which has definitely fully alleviated any frustration I probably would have had. I am very excited to get the game, and appreciate the transparency.

Try not to stress out too much, Conor. Your post above clearly shows you are working hard for us backers. Beyond that, all I ask is that you enjoy the holidays with your family and remember this is supposed to be fun. Ha!

    11. Ben Hamilton on

Appreciate the transparency and honesty. I backed the pnp but I haven't had a chance play yet. If the game is fun, I will back future projects regardless of the delays that don't affect me. Good luck!

    12. Kyle R. Woods

I can be patient. However, since some copies are "in the wild" now, I think people would appreciate more frequent updates. I know I would.

    13. brenton t vallade on

This is a lot less time I have waited for other games that had less issues than you have. Keep up the good work.

    14. Adhil Riad Patel on

I love your transparency and passion, and I will certainly be supporting you and your company in future.

Thanks for being you my friend.

Try to find some time to spend with your family. Its nearly Christmas after all :)
      Best wishes.

    16. René Schultze

Will back your games again if they are as interesting and cool as GM. Love this little game :)

    17. SMYR

Conor, don't let those voices of madness into your head! I guess the images of Gorus Maximus drove some of us crazy. For what it's worth: I think you are all good - and I'm a seasoned backer and not some young sport with only a view backed projects. Shipping is when the shitting starts and in most cases, creators aren't the people throwing same said shit into the fan. Quodd Heroes - way after schedule, Beasts of Balance - my parcel/pledge was left in the warehouse and forgotten, KDM - nobody knows when the gamblers chest will be delivered. And yet you all have something in common: you do your best as creators, endure a culture of childish raging through backer comments and messages and still, I'm confident you will deliver a great product - just as promised. Happy blood sheddin' X-mas to you and your family!

    18. Alan Brookland on

What a great bunch of comments above, it's a reflection of how well we backers regard you and your games Conner.

Yes there will be some that are pissed off with the delays but I'm with these fine fellows in believing in you, willing to wait and happy with your openness and communications.

Keep up the good work and don't stress too much over these unfortunate events.

The game's coming and by all accounts is worth waiting for!

    19. Alex So

everything good, Conor. You take care of your backers and I have no doubt that everything you tell us in your updates is right. Other (big) companies do updates every few months, telling us that we have to wait a few months more for our games - blaming others, "out of our control", "you have to accept"....
If I am right, I'm waiting for my final "Dark Souls" items about 2 years (can this be true?)..

You are a honest guy ... stay strong and please accept that the situation is like it is and you do everything you can do but s**t simply happens...
The community here has a good sense of who's credible - and you are.

      Best regards from Germany,

I'm blessed to live in a world where I can order a game designed in Canada and manufactured in China and still show up to my door in a small town in the US. I promise I will not let this deter me from backing your future projects. I had the lovely opportunity to meet you in Indy at Books and Brews, and I am sorry this stressful mess has been handed to you. Thanks for the backer hug!

Conor all good. Anyone who ask for thier money back is ridiculous. Keep fighting the good fight

    22. Christopher Coleman

You're good, man! I haven't really followed the comments (sorry!), but having backed a whole bunch of KS projects by now, I for one don't sweat delays. If I get it before a YEAR over projected completion date, I count that as a win, lol...again, you're good :)

I also just wanted to say how much I appreciate the transparency and the communication. I too don’t mind delays that much. I expect it. What does get me angry is poor/lacking communication in such situations. As long as you keep us updated and are honest about things, I’m all good. Thanks for your continued commitment to your backers.

It also helps that I got to see the game at PAX Unplugged, so I know the quality. You made a great little game and I look forward to seeing it soon.

    25. Kaitlyn Bible

I've backed quite a few games and have only ever gotten 1 on time, it's pretty standard to be late. That being said I was recently a part of a Kickstarter in which their reasons for delays and lack of communication and apology were just appalling. All of your updates, on the other hand, have been so kind and transparent. I'll be happily waiting on this one and I will happily back games from you in the future!

Don’t sweat it Conor, it’s a board game, well actually a card game, and I have no doubt that I’ll get it and play it and enjoy it. I’m still excited for it, and will continue to be so until I get it.

I agree with Lance though, the family parts of the updates are gold, if there’s anything you should feel bad about, it’s not even including one in this latest update!! ;-)

It says a lot about your character to step up and take responsibility for the situation and not pass it on. It’s obvious many of the issues are beyond your control, and I can empathize with you how frustrating that must be. Your frankness is appreciated, honest information is always appreciated over silence, the silence and excuses are what generate the most issues for other Kickstarters. I’ve told you before and I’ll say it again now, you have a supporter for life in me, you are the type of person I believe deserves to succeed. To this day Summit is still the game on my shelf that I am most proud of because I took a chance on a guy with an idea and you knocked it out of the park. I know you will do the same here and with your projects to come.

PS the family posts have been lacking. Make sure we get one more before you close this one out. 🎉

Hopefully you won’t take this the wrong way but I had to smile reading this update because I too have worked with China on engineering and I can tell you the trouble you’ve experienced is typical of working across the pond. Anyone upset with what’s happened is someone whose never experienced overseas “co-operative” work spaces and the language and custom barriers. I hope you don’t let this ruin your Christmas preparations/traditions. Good luck and I know I’ll be happy when the game gets here even if it’s after the new year.

I've backed 3/3 projects... each one I've received so far has been great... excellent quality and on time... I don't know why people get bent out of shape over this kind of thing... apparently they live in a perfect world, with a perfect car and a perfect dog and a perfect cat! Talk about blinders! I am truly starting to get sick of petty nonsense that goes on here at Kickstarter! I have one project (that I am sure I may never receive...), it's been nearly 3 years now! People need to chillax... if they want something to moan and groan about, discuss a Kickstarter that really hasn't delivered! Keep up the good work Connor! No sweat here! It'll come!

    33. Jacob The-Jacob Smith on

Your games are definitely worth the wait! I'm not mad at all! Just super looking forward to playing it AND backing you're future Kickstarters! Your games are friggin gold Conner!

Conor I back your games because I believe in you and it makes me happy to know im helping you reach your dream and support your awesome family. Helping only a little to be sure but happy to do what I can! I appreciate your passion and the rest of the backers who have commented are right. Its only a game we are in on the manufacturing process and hiccups happen. Ill be looking out for your next game ready to back. No worries man. Also I got my shipping notice today! So im super excited.

    41. Bickwick

I'm not bothered. Sorry to hear if people are giving you crap. Thanks for the hustle and I look forward to the game whenever it comes.

    42. Minty Hunter

...hang on. It's a boardgame, not a kidney for a transplant. I think we'll all survive.

Great comms. Good luck with your China frustrations. No drama at this end with the delay.

(I do get frustrated with people yelling due to delays. If timeliness is your most important requirement, go and buy the latest rebadged Monopoly. It'll be sitting on a shelf. If you want something that's unique, you might need to wait a little. Nice to see that the comments here are positive- big change from other KS threads!)

Plain and simple, shit happens, man. You've been super transparent, very helpful, and doing all you can. I'm not mad, though i am relieved I'll get a shipping tag. My neighborhood kinda sucks and i don't want my game stolen. I'm a sold customer and will be checking out your next project hands down. Thanks for all you do! ❤

    49. Alexander Albin

I would rather wait, with full confidence that I'm getting something amazing than rush to get something only half baked. I also believe in being paid for your work so I urge you not to expend any of your earnings trying to rush something out. I am sure there will be some who will get upset and whine that they didn't get it before X arbitrary date. But, at this point there isn't going to be a way to make them happy minus a time machine(in which case if you have a time machine I am sure there are better ways to be using that puppy). Thank you for all your efforts and I will continue to look forward to your product. Hopefully more feel like I do than otherwise.
