About this project
***If you're joining us late, you'll be able to get more details & continue to pre-order or buy the dice/cards/PDF/font at dungeonmorphs.com.***
A couple years back we introduced DungeonMorph dice (& cards) through Kickstarter. Through Q-Workshop, we made it happen! DungeonMorphs are mini dungeon geomorphs that can join with each other. Each edge of each 10x10 design has two corridors (at the same positions) leading off the design. So you may place any two designs next to each other to make a larger map area. Now we're applying the same concept to making random cities & villages!
Each side of each die will have a unique design of part of a city or village. The next time the party looks for a town to stop at, roll a few of the dice, push them together, line up the dice, and you've got an instant city or village. If you need the layout later, take a picture of the dice (or cards). Use our PDF, Font or images if you want to keep track of the village/city digitally. (Every reward will include the matching image versions in either JPG or PNG format.) Initially we're planning on making one set of 5 dice with half city designs and half village designs. However, we expect to meet our initial goal early and do extra sets of dice:
- At $10,000 we'll make one set of 5 dice with village & city designs.
- But at $12,500 we'll split that one set into two sets of 5 dice each: one with city designs and the other with village designs. (We're calling these our "two core sets" because our core cards & pdfs sets will include these 60 designs even if we don't make the $12,500 stretch goal.)
- At $19,000 we'll add a set of city ruins. These will be included at no extra charge for the printed cards, PDF, & Font.
Our original DungeonMorphs Kickstarter successfully raised over $20,000 in March 2011, and rewards were shipped that December. We've recently revised and upgraded those original dungeon and cavern designs. You can support this project even further by selecting those revised dungeon & cavern sets as rewards for this project as well. We have the Adventurer set (dungeons), Explorer set (more dungeons, pictured below) and Spellunker set (caverns) available. These (as well as the original DungeonMorph cards, Creature & Encounter Decks, or monster Stand-Ins) will ship about two weeks after the Kickstarter ends, in time for the holidays. If you'd like these as part of your pledge, please send us a note when you pledge so we can put them aside for you and ensure we have them ready to send two weeks after the Kickstarter ends. (If you're outside the US and want this shipment separate from a second shipment with the other dice/cards in May, please double your extra shipping amount.)
But we're making this Kickstarter because we need your help to determine the demand and to put together the initial investment to make the all-new designs!
We also will make card versions of the designs in two sizes: 3.5"x2.5" standard card size and 6"x6".
The 3.5"x2.5" cards feature the same square designs as the dice and 6"x6" cards. The extra space may be used for a name of the tile or other text, but when placed it can be easily covered by the next card placed.
We want you to have a stake in seeing this project be very successful by sharing that success through free add-ons.
Here is a text version of the same info, plus a few details:
$12,000 FREE Bonus Die: Everyone ordering 2+ sets of dice gets a free bonus die per set. (So if you back for two sets, you get 2 bonus dice. If you back for 5 sets you'll get 5 bonus dice. The extras will be from the same set you're backing so you can make a larger map of that type! This includes the new city/village dice as well as our prior dungeon/cavern dice)
$12,500 2nd Set of Dice! The planned single city/village dice set will be split and expanded into two sets: One of 30 village designs and another of city designs.
$14,000 FREE Mini Card Pack: We'll add a free 10-card sampler of our Creature & Encounter Decks for anyone backing for any physical reward. (Monster stat cards & adventure outline idea cards)
$16,000 2nd FREE Bonus Die: Everyone ordering 2+ sets of dice gets a 2nd free bonus die per set. (So if you back for two sets, you get 4 bonus dice. If you back for 5 sets you'll get 10 bonus dice. The extras will be from the same set you're backing so you can make a larger map of that type! This includes the new city/village dice as well as our prior dungeon/cavern dice)
$18,000 FREE 3x3 Dice Tray: Everyone getting a 2+ sets of dice will get a free dice tray that holds 9 dice in place.
$19,000 3rd Set of Dice: We'll create a 3rd set of dice to choose. This set will be ruined versions of our city dice with perhaps a few new designs to replace any city designs don't make for good ruins.
Because this is a late addition, we don't have many samples ready, but the example below by Tony Brotherton shows what the coliseum design looks like as a ruin:
These won't take too much time because they are based on other designs. We hope you'll support them by pledging for a third set!
$25,000 3rd FREE Bonus Die: Everyone ordering 2+ sets of dice gets a 3rd free bonus die per set. (So if you back for two sets, you get 6 bonus dice. If you back for 5 sets you'll get 15 bonus dice. The extras will be from the same set you're backing so you can make a larger map of that type! This includes the new city/village dice as well as our prior dungeon/cavern dice)

We've planned into our reward levels two ship dates for US backers. The first will be 2 weeks after pledging completes for any products we already have available. (Adventurer/Explorer/Spellunker dice; non-sample Creature & Encounter Decks, Monster Stand-Ins & the original DungeonMorph Cards). The second will be when the other products (new dice, cards) are all ready which is expect to be May.
If you're an international backer and want products shipped early, please double the shipping amount in your pledge.
$2 Add the 3x3 Dice Tray to any physical reward.
$5 Add the Core 2-set (Cities & Villages) Font to any other reward.
$5 Add the PDF of the original Dungeon & Cavern sets to any other reward.

Inkwell Ideas has made a lot of other great (and ENnie-nominated!) products. Several are related to making exciting, spur-of-the-moment adventures. You can add any of the following to any pledge:
$11 Each: System Neutral Creature Decks: Each deck features 54 creatures with great art on one side and system neutral/ecology information on the back. There are 5 decks: Aberrations & Magical Beasts; Dragon, Undead & Outsiders; Fey, Constructs & Wildlife; Humanoids & Monstrous Humanoids; Animals
$11 Each: Encounter Decks: Two decks of 56 cards each. One side has an adventure outline, the other has a map and random details such as trap ideas, unusual treasures and plot twists. Deck 1 has line art maps; Deck 2 has color maps... but the adventure ideas are all different between decks.
$11: The Original DungeonMorph Cards: 90 2.5"x2.5" cards with Dungeon Geomorphs on each. The back is the mirror of the front for even more combinations.
$20: Monster Stand-ins: Get over 600 cardstock minis on 100 4"x3" perforated cards. Includes 32 stands & a matching PDF. Some very large creatures are one card by themselves, small creatures are 9 to a card while medium creatures are 8 per card, large are 4 per card, Huge are 2 per card.
Just add the required amount to your pledge. We'll ask about these add-ons in our survey to backers. You may want to make a note to yourself of what you're choosing.
At the $100 level we have two rewards which package together several of our popular Creature & GM Card RPG Accessories. And at $150 we put both of those packages together. Please read the reward descriptions in the sidebar, but the following graphics may make them easier to follow:
Risks and challenges
As mentioned above, this isn't our first Kickstarter. We've learned a lot along the way.
Our previous DungeonMorph Dice Kickstarter shipped late, so this time we've extended our deadline 2 months past our manufacturer's estimate just in case. They are a major hobby dice manufacturer (Q-Workshop) and fully committed to making these happen again.
Another of our Kickstarter projects shipped late as well due to increasing scope during the Kickstarter. For this project, all of the designs for the initial set are done and over 50% of the possible stretch goal designs are finished. We expect to have 80-90% complete before pledging finishes and of course, Q-Workshop can start making the dice with completed designs as we finish the last few.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
One option is to simply take a picture now that phones with cameras are common. But if you don't have a camera handy, there's a way to quickly jot down the designs used: Each die has a letter code and of course each side of the die has a number. So just grab some paper and jot down the letter/number codes. For example B4-W2-D1 could be the B die side 4, followed by the W die side 2 and then the D die side 1. If any of these are rotated, rotate the matching letter/number combination. The same can be done with cards.
Buy more dice! :) Ok, seriously: Use the method for jotting down the layout mentioned in the prior FAQ answer, then roll them again. Maybe just keep the closest die to the direction the party is moving and re-roll the others. Also, you can try the cards which allow you to use more designs at the same time and everyone is going to get a PDF of the designs that match the dice or cards they get!
Our preference is to have the square 2.5"x2.5" size to match the prior DungeonMorph Cards. But that depends on finding a manufacturer to make that size economically. We're still working that out, but it looks likely.
I'd like 2 (for example) of the new sets of dice & 3 (for example) of the dungeon/cavern sets. Should I pledge for the 2 dice set reward or the 5 dice set reward?
It would be more proper to do the 5 set reward as that handles the international shipping better, but you can do it either way and we can make it work. (Note if you are international and you want the existing items--anything but the city/village dice & cards--early, please double the shipping add-on when you pledge.)
