Sidequest Decks are system agnostic tabletop RPG accessories. They are perfect for when your players unexpectedly take a casual comment for a story hook, for stocking a hex crawl or serving as the basis of a larger adventure. You may even chain several together for an entire campaign!
Each card has a map on one side and a mini-adventure outline on the other side. The outline starts with a short description for the GM. (Skim these to find an adventure that fits the circumstances.) Choose between a couple of story hooks to get the adventure started. Next several encounter ideas move the game along. Finally each card wraps up with one or two follow-up adventure ideas.
We've made several of these decks over the past few years, and now we're planning three more:
After the Total Party Kill
The party didn't survive the final showdown--or worse, they didn't even get that far. Sure you can make up new characters and the original characters' "cousins" can show up or you can even start completely over. But thumb through these cards and you'll find adventure ideas to keep the campaign going. For example, have the PCs fight their way out of Hell. Or perhaps they are ghost-like and can continue their quest as ghosts hoping to return to their bodies. This deck will have over 50 ideas!
This deck of 50+ cards will be chock full of adventures that you'll swear were lifted from H. P. Lovecraft's mind--because they were! He left behind over 200 story ideas that we've read to create some of these cards. Some adventures will have an X-Files and even Ghostbusters influence as well.
Modern (Criminals, Spies, & Superheroes)
Whether your campaign is focused on criminals, spies, or superheroes, this deck's adventures will have plenty of ideas you can use. Turn a spy organization into a criminal operation or vice versa to switch an adventure between those genres. Or give the foes super-powers to make the adventure fit a superhero setting. This deck will also have 50+ cards where each card is an adventure.
(The above samples will have 2 more rounds of editing.)
Stretch Goal: Pulp Adventures
If we reach $20,000 we will make a 4th deck of Sidequest Decks with Pulp Adventure outlines & maps! These will be inspired by Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, Zorro, among others. Many will be based on historical mysteries (ex: missing confederate gold, Bermuda triangle, Atlantis, etc.) or involve mythological artifacts. Some of the cards will include a short note on how to make the adventure more fantasy themed. Everyone who supports us for 3 or more decks will get this specific extra deck free.
You may pledge for any three decks (the three new ones we're creating or ones we've done in the past--see the list below) to qualify for the free deck. But to ensure our print run is correct, the free bonus deck will be this Pulp Adventures deck.
If you're not getting three or more decks you will be able to pick this deck as a reward if we make the $20,000 goal.
Video Review of our Prior Sidequest Decks
"On each of these cards you’ll find what you need to fuel a session, if not several–it’s not every day you can get a year’s worth of adventure ideas in a single box" --Source: http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2018/05/tabletop-spotlight-sidequest-decks.html
The prior Sidequest Decks are:
- Arcane Academy - adventures centered on a magic school, for kid characters or adults.
- Dungeons, Caverns, & Ruins Fantasy - fantasy adventures in those settings.
- High Seas, Pirates, & Ports - fantasy & pirate adventures on the seas or port cities.
- Horror Fantasy - fantasy adventures with undead/necromancy themes.
- Political & Urban Fantasy - fantasy adventures in town and cities as well as political plots.
- Science Fantasy - adventures inspired by Dying Earth, Thundarr the Barbarian, etc.
- Science Fiction - adventures set in the far future.
- Wilderness & Frontier Fantasy - fantasy adventures set in the wilderness or villages.
These prior decks are all available on our website store as well as via DriveThru/RPGNow and Amazon, or you may pledge for them through this Kickstarter. Just pick the reward you want and pledge a multiple for the number of decks you would like. If you want 5 total printed decks & the matching PDFs, pick the $11 reward, but pledge $55 + shipping.
Note: Shipping is a flat fee, because the cost of shipping a 2nd deck (or 3rd) is negligible compared to shipping one. There is a point where shipping extra decks costs us more, but we'd rather keep the math simple. Plus this makes for a small "bulk discount". For example, pledge amount plus shipping in the US:
- 1 Deck: $11 + $7 = $18
- 2 Decks: $11 + $11 + $7 = $29
- 3 Decks: $11 + $11 + $11 + $7 = $40
And so on. If you're in another country, change the $7 to the cost to ship to your location. ($12 Canada, $16 elsewhere.)

Risks and challenges
We've done 8 of these decks already, so the risk is minimal. We have multiple writers on the project so if anyone falls behind, the others can pick up a few more. We have only one cartographer, but if something happens with that task we have worked with several others who are very capable as well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
