This project started with the development of original fonts to use in a forthcoming tabletop game project. When we had developed a selection of fonts, we realized that perhaps there were other people who might be interested in a collection of high quality fantasy fonts! With that in mind we expanded the scope of the fonts and used a professional font editor to further refine them.
Our previous collections of fantasy fonts were successfully funded here on Kickstarter and now we are back with our fourth pack, this time focused on the Cthulhu mythos! The pack aims to include a variety of period accurate fonts to construct scripts, ciphers, newspapers, ancient languages etc.
7 of the 10 fonts have already been digitized. Click on a font to see a demo image:
- Lovecraft Handwritten Script (150+ glyphs)
- Columbus (80+ glyphs)
- Teutonic (190+ glyphs)
- Demotic (160+ glyphs)
- Hieratic (160+ glyphs)
- Copiale Cipher (160+ glyphs)
- Templar Cipher (25+ glyphs)
The three remaining fonts under development are glyphs from the Cthulhu cult idol in Lovecraft's original drawing, a stylized tentacle font, and another turn of the century print font!
Here is a little more information on the fonts already digitized:
The Lovecraft Handwritten Script is a digitization based on several of Lovecraft's personal letters from the early 20th century.
Columbus and Teutonic are fonts developed for print in the 1890s. Columbus is well known for being the font to grace the cover of "Call of Cthulhu" RPG books. Our version of the font is created from period print examples and the original foundry specimen.
Hieratic and Demotic are based on the ancient Egyptian cursive writing systems, and the Copiale and Templar ciphers are based on purported cryptography of secret societies.
FORMAT & LICENSE:
The Scrawl of Cthulhu font pack will be distributed to backers in a zipped folder with each font available in the following formats:
- OpenType .otf
- TrueType .ttf
There are free online tools that allow the conversion of .otf or .ttf to a myriad of other formats as well, such as .woff if you require them.
There are two license levels available to backers:
- Personal Use
- Commercial Use
Personal Use is perfect for the GameMaster who wants to create handouts and cartography rich in detail for private use and tabletop gaming. Single user install only please.
Commercial Use is designed to allow the use of the fonts in any sort of professional publication, website, video game, movie, etc. The fonts may be installed by multiple users who fall under the umbrella of your commercial endeavor.
Most commercial fonts typically cost between $25-$40 per style! This package of 10 fonts represents a great value that can only be had here on Kickstarter!
MAGIC SIGILS, ELVISH SCRIPTS & DWARVISH RUNES:
Backers can also choose a reward level that includes the previous Fantasy Font Forge packages of 12 Dwarvish Rune fonts, 8 Elvish Script fonts, 8 Magic Sigils (and 2 bonus fonts) for a total of 30 additional fantasy fonts! You can find more info and see full examples at our previous Kickstarter project pages HERE, HERE and HERE.
Risks and challenges
This is our sixth Kickstarter project and the fourth set of fonts. The font package is about 80% complete and work will continue during the funding period. We have tried to show the result of the work completed so far in the examples above.
Our previous font projects were sent to backers the same day that payment was processed and we look to uphold this standard of service.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
