About this project
This project started with the development of original fonts to use in a forthcoming tabletop game project. When we had developed the Dwarvish Rune fonts to a professional level, we realized that perhaps there were other people who might be interested in a collection of high quality fantasy fonts! With that in mind we expanded the scope of the fonts and used a professional font editor to further refine them.
For the game we are creating we wanted to use Rune scripts that looked like they had been hand written, carved in stone, or written as signage for taverns or sign posts. Since none of these font styles were readily available, we decided to custom produce our own!
10 Dwarvish Rune fonts and 2 bonus fonts have already been completed. These include:
- Davek Black Letter, Print, Engraved, Distressed, Brush
- Dethek Black Letter, Print, Engraved, Distressed, Brush
- Bonus OL Rune, OL Script
The “Black Letter” fonts were hand written in a caligraphic style to simulate the look of a scribes text. Alternate glyphs are provided for upper and lowercase letters to effectively double the font size. Tracking symbols and pentimal numeric glyphs are also included in the Dethek font. Davek includes numeric and special glyphs.
The “Print” fonts were designed to resemble how runes might appear when used on signage. Uppercase, numeric and special glyphs are included.
The “Engraved” fonts were designed to resemble how the runes would look when engraved in stone or metal. Uppercase, numeric and special glyphs are included.
The “Distressed” fonts are similar to the print font but with added cracking and grunge to produce a weathered look. Alternate glyphs are provided for upper and lowercase letters to effectively double the font size. Tracking symbols, numeric and special glyphs are included.
The “Brush” fonts were hand written with a brush. These fonts were designed to look as if they had been scrawled quickly on cavern walls or on scrolls. Uppercase, numeric and special glyphs are included.
The bonus "OL" fonts are based on the pseudo-runic alphabet found in the hoax book “Oera Linda.” They are useful for text that needs to look “runic” but can still be read without special language knowledge since they more closely resemble the traditional alphabet.
FORMAT & LICENSE:
The Dwarvish Runes will be distributed to backers in a pack with each font available in the following formats:
- OpenType .otf
- TrueType .ttf
There are free online tools that allow the conversion of .otf or .ttf to a myriad of other formats as well, such as .woff if you require them.
There are two license levels available to backers:
- Personal Use
- Commercial Use
Personal Use is perfect for the GameMaster who wants to create handouts and maps rich in detail for private use and tabletop gaming. Single user only please. $25
Commercial Use is designed to allow the use of the fonts in any sort of professional publication, website, video game, movie, etc. The fonts may be installed by multiple users who fall under the umbrella of your commercial endeavor. $45
Most commercial fonts typically cost between $25-$40 per style. This package of 12 fonts represents a great value that can only be had here on Kickstarter!
Risks and challenges
Since this our first offering on Kickstarter, we wanted to make sure the work was already complete before launching the project page. We have tried to show the result of that work in the examples above.
The funding goal was determined by the price of the font editing software, plus Kickstarter fees and taxes. We need to unlock the software to the full version in order to export the fonts to share with backers. We have already spent considerable time working with the software and are confident we can provide the fonts according to our projected timeline.
Based on how well this project is received we may be back with Elven, Drowic, Common, Draconic and other fantasy font packs!
