Why am I making this game?

Firstly, thank you again for your extremely generous support! We have some really great momentum coming out of our first day, which is extremely exciting. With my mental illness, I often fall into a cognitive distortion called "all or nothing thinking". Sometimes, I am really excited about the project, and I think we will meet or maybe even exceed our goal. More often, I get really discouraged and think that we will fail.

This of course causes my OCD worries to kick into overdrive, so I am anxious and stressed. Combine that with my insomnia (I guess I'm a bit of a mess!), and it is a recipe for not sleeping well. However, I am quite pleased with our progress on the first day thanks to all of your generous backers! I slept better than I have in a loooooonnngggg time. I really have you to thank for that!

I am still nervous - we have a ways to go, but with your help spreading the word, I think we can create a really special game. Another reminder - we will be showing at PAX booth 885, so please stop by so I can thank you in person!

I think it's important to discuss why this game is important to me, so I put together a video.

I genuinely believe that I can help people with this game and my frank discussions. Perhaps you'll accuse me of being idealistic, but at the very least, I think it's worth a try!

      Sorry for the delay in responding to your comments. I didn't realize until now that people could comment on updates. Ha! I guess I'm a kickstarter newb.

      Yeah, I'll be running the crowdfunding campaign. It is definitely difficult to really put yourself out there, but I think it's pretty important. I think one of the reasons people are responding so well to this kickstarter is because it is so personal. If I had someone else do it, I would miss out on opportunities to make personal connections.

      I know Jonathan Blow had a hard time with Braid. I think pretty much every game developer has a hard time post-release (like poor Phil Fish. :( ). You pour so much of yourself into a game and then when someone doesn't appreciate it, it pretty much undoes 20 positive comments/reviews of the game. It's weird the way it works, but I'm not the only one.

      Being a game developer is hard, and being an indie game developer is even harder, but I think it's definitely what I want to do with my life.

      Oh man, will you be manning the progress of this crowdfunding campaign? This will make anxiety go into extreme. This can't be good for your mental health, maybe tell someone else to take over.

      The demo really freaked me out.

      You know Jonathan Blow put a lot of himself into Braid. If you haven't yet you might want to chat with him on how it worked out. I -think- he initially had a hard time with it.

      In any case, chin up man. You got LIKE TEN GRAND SO FAR.
