Community First, A Home for the Homeless

An extraordinary new movement in Austin, TX is transforming the lives of homeless people through the power of community. Community First! Village is a 27-acre master planned development providing affordable, permanent housing, opportunities for a dignified income, and a supportive community for the chronically homeless.

Director Layton Blaylock interviews Community First! Village blacksmith Evan Wilson.
Director Layton Blaylock interviews Community First! Village blacksmith Evan Wilson.

The new documentary by Layton Blaylock introduces this one-of-a-kind residential program. You’ll hear about the heartbreaking events that cause homelessness, and the heartwarming stories of being welcomed into a nurturing environment where dignity and self-worth are restored. You will witness what can be achieved when a community comes together. Shooting started in March of 2017 and will continue through the end of the year. We've captured some amazing stories revealing how this unique concept heals people and transforms lives.

The purpose of the movie is to share this promising model and contribute to its expansion beyond Austin.

Community First! Village is a truly unique neighborhood and concept. It is not a homeless shelter, which typically provides some form of free temporary housing. Community First! Village offers permanent affordable housing.  Everybody living here pays rent, no exceptions!

"It is specifically designed to lift the chronically homeless off the streets of the Austin area and offer them a place to call home, helping them to heal from the ravages of life on the streets, allowing them to rediscover a purpose in their lives, and then going out and beginning to care for others in the world."    Alan Graham, CEO Mobile Loaves & Fishes

The residents are given the opportunity to earn a dignified income working at the Village in various areas such as the maintenance department, the Community Gardens, the cinema or the Community Inn. With open access to an “art house” and blacksmith shop, residents also have the opportunity to produce handmade goods that are sold in the Community Market.

Community First! Village not only provides housing for the chronically homeless but it is also the home of people who have never been homeless. Some of these residents are on staff, some are work campers who work on the property in exchange for their RV hook-up and others are missional residents.

Residents: Tammy Mistrot (formerly homeless), Larry Crawford (Director of Maintenance), Nancy Miller (missional resident), Joel Jackson (work camper).

Community First! Village's concept is anchored around micro-houses and RV's providing comfortable and affordable independent living areas supported by common amenities such as shared kitchen and bathrooms. The village is designed to promote community living. Some of the other amenities available include the health center, the market, an outdoor movie theater, community gardens, places for study and fellowship, community bicycles, walking trails, and a bus stop providing public transportation to the residents and visitors.

Layton Blaylock, Producer, Director, Cameraman:

Layton Blaylock is an award-winning filmmaker, director, director of photography, and a founding partner in Inferno Films. His feature documentary Art From the Streets garnered several awards including 5 for Best Documentary and was accepted at over 30 film festivals around the world. Art From the Streets was another passion project about an art program for homeless people. The plight of the homeless is a subject near and dear to Layton’s heart, and he has found a subject with Community First! Village that he hopes can make a real impact on our cities and towns across the country by helping the homeless get off the streets and transform their lives. However, what Community First, A Home for the Homeless will show is that it takes more than just housing, it takes a community.

Quincy Lowman and Jeff Hastings, Executive-Producers:

Quincy and Jeff are co-owners of Elephant Productions one of Austin’s largest film & video production companies servicing the evolving corporate and institutional market since 1992. Elephant Productions has produced projects all over the world for a wide variety of clients such as Dell Computers, American Heart Association, and the University of Texas. Jeff and Quincy are both founding partners in Inferno Films.

Paul Patrin, Field Audio, Editor:

Paul Patrin is a 20 year veteran in the video production industry working as an editor, colorist, and videographer on a wide variety of projects including documentaries, TV shows, and informational films. Because of Paul’s versatility, he is a valuable member of this production handling the field audio recording and serving as editor for the film.

Why do we need funding and how will it be used?

We have been shooting this documentary since March 2017 and have hours of very compelling stories already in the can. Inferno Films has been financing the film so far. Now we need to raise money to cover some of the big ticket items that will be necessary to complete the documentary and to get it in front of as many people as possible with the goal of inspiring other cities to adopt a similar plan for helping the homeless and, in turn, their communities.

Our $50K goal will help cover some production costs, such as, extra crew for bigger production days (e.g. multi-camera situations for larger events), rental of specialty production equipment, some post-production expenses, music licensing, audio mixing, festival entry fees, and Kickstarter expenses. We will be shooting through the end of 2017, so we have several months left of shooting!

Here is a diagram indicating how the $50,000 will be used.

If we’re fortunate enough to exceed our goal of $50K, we will be able to invest in more production personnel and equipment. There are many events and situations that would greatly benefit from multiple cameras. It would also give us the luxury of having an original music score produced. A custom, personal touch such as an original score can greatly enhance any film. The increased funding will also provide the ability to enter and attend more film festivals. It will allows us to have our DVDs replicated. And, it will go a long way in covering some public relation and marketing expenses which will maximize our ability to spread the word about this amazing movement, which is the reason that we're making this documentary.

If we can exceed the $125,000 plateau, we would then plan to take the film to various homeless conferences around the country (and maybe the world). We have our minds set on presenting the film to the annual conference of the National Alliance to End Homelessness in July of 2018. The largest conference of it’s kind in the United States.

We seriously hope that this augmented exposure would result in a significant expansion of the Community First! Village concept making a serious dent in the growing homeless crisis in our country.

Risks and challenges

The issue of homelessness doesn't resonate with all audiences, but we know from our experience with "Art From the Streets" that there is a very passionate, wide, and receptive audience for the stories of hope we are capturing. Most communities nationwide would like to find ways to permanently reduce the amount of people living on the streets. What Mobile Loaves & Fishes has established with Community First! Village is one of the most promising approaches ever devised.

Documentaries are always a challenge, but we have a proven track record as filmmakers, particularly with the subject of homelessness. We are very confident that this will be a beautiful film we can all be proud of and that it will showcase this extraordinary community as a model for the rest of the country.
