Indywood wants to open up a new, two-screen art house cinema in the Bywater--one of New Orleans' coolest neighborhood.
We plan to open the new Indywood in early January of next year, but we can't open up if we don't first acquire some necessary elements to turn our new building into a cinema: Projectors, speakers, chairs, and a marquee.
For a year and a half, Indywood existed as a pop-up cinema at a different location in downtown New Orleans. A cinematic community blossomed out of our humble space, and soon we grew too big for our britches.
We lost our lease at our old spot, and throughout the summer we've been homeless. But that didn't stop us! Our wonderful community stuck with us as we roamed around New Orleans with a series of bike-in screenings.
All the while we were searching for a new building.
We're so glad to announce: The search is over. Indywood has a new home.
Now we have to turn our new space into a cinema!
We've got a lot of space in our new building. The plan is to turn 3400 St. Claude into a Cinema / Cafe / Library / Bar.
Put Your Handprint on the Wall
Everyone who contributes to this Kickstarter is invited to put their handprint on the wall of the new Indywood. Every Friday night in the month after we open Indywood, all you Kickstarter contributors are invited to come dip your hand in a paint bucket and put your handprint on our wall. Once it dries, you can sign your name on your palm-print. It'll be there forever and ever.
"I Desire Indywood" T-Shirt
Do you desire Indywood on St. Claude?
Sport your support with the new Indywood T-shirt. This shirt will only be sold through this Kickstarter campaign, so it's proof that you were part of the creation of the new Indywood.
Become a Member
Once we open, Indywood members will get into all our screening for free! Plus free popcorn every time.
Members also get to vote for four films a month. What do I mean by "vote"??? Read on, friendly cinema lover...
Vote With You're Tickets
What movies would you like to see at Indywood in our first months open? Help us decide what to program by voting with your tickets.
We want you to be able to choose what films you want to see on Indywood's screens, just as you're able to choose on Netflix.
In the last week of this kickstarter campaign, we're going to send a survey to all of our members and everyone who has pre-bought tickets. The survey will include a list of recent indie films we're considering booking as well as classic films we want to bring back to the big screen. Check out the list of films we're considering booking on the COMING SOON page of our website.
Every ticket you buy through this kickstarter will equal one cinematic "vote" for films you want to see. Members will get four votes. We will book the TOP 8 FILMS with the highest votes in the first two months after we open.
Do you have any suggestions for films that should go on the survey? Please feel free to email them to Will (the Indywood programmer): email@example.com.
Claim Your Red Chair
By far the most beloved aspect of the old Indywood cinema was our big, red chairs (more comfortable than any other cinema seats in the land!).
One of our funding goals for this campaign is to fill our two new theaters with 74 new chairs. The new chairs we're buying won't be quite as luxurious as our old red chairs.
So if you would like to strongly support the creation of the new Indywood, while at the same time claiming one of the best and most comfortable seats in the house (plus a year long membership!)--you can now claim a red chair to be your very own!
We will honor your contribution to the new Indywood by printing your name on the back of your chair.
And of course, that chair will always be reserved for you when you come to Indywood, even if Beyonce herself is sitting in it.
Rent The Theater
Would you like to have a movie themed get-together in a cool cinema space?
At our old location we hosted birthdays, wedding receptions, live-streamed video conferences, musical sing-alongs, rough cut film screenings, short film premiers and many folks who just wanted to watch movies on the big screen with their friends.
If you want to support the creation of a new cinema, help us out by pre-renting your own movie screening!
Bring Indywood to Your Backyard
Through our experience running a summer of bike-in movies, Indywood is now completely mobile. We can set up a movie screening anywhere!
Would you like to invite your friends over for a movie screening in your back yard? Or maybe show your favorite film at your wedding or birthday? If you help us open up our new permanent location, we'll set up our mobile screen anywhere you like!
Risks and challenges
We can't turn 3400 St. Claude into a cinema without a few key elements: Chairs, projectors, sound systems and a gigantic sign/marque.
Nothing is quite so iconically Indywood as our 40 famous red chairs from our last location. You can now have your name printed proudly on one of our original chairs as one of our rewards!
Indywood is growing and we now we need more chairs! We'd like to get 74 new chairs and 4 sofas to fill our two new theaters.
Projectors (X2): $3,348
In our blog, we've written extensively on how we innovate on the cinema experience by utilizing new technologies.
We'd like to keep experimenting with 21st century cinema in our new building. To do so we need two new projectors.
5.1 Surround Sound Systems (X2): $2,000
Big sound is just as important to the cinema experience as the big screen. You can watch on a laptop, and see everything your supposed to--but you can't hear anywhere what movie should sound like on laptop speakers. That's why we need good speakers at Indywood :)
A Gigantic Indywood Sign: $5,000
What is a neighborhood cinema without a brilliant signage?! We want to commision an artist friend to build us a massive, glowing INDYWOOD sign, including a big marque to display what's showing.
We've got a new building, but we can't set up shop until fund the basic cinematic requirements.
Once we've funded this campaign, we'll nail the chairs into their final positions, plug in the projectors and the speakers, light up St. Claude with our brilliant new sign and fill our marquee cool films for your viewing pleasue.
If all goes according to plan, we'll have a series of "sneak peek" screenings in December and then a grand opening in early January.
Thanks so much for sticking with Indywood as we've battled through a season of growing pains. We're so close to having a permanent Indywood Cinema in downtown New Orleans :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
