In addition to curating a lot of great content on our website, what we really love doing is making our own original content that is free to our audience. We’re both visual storytellers. Drew is a photographer and filmmaker who has shot short films that have premiered at festivals like Sundance and Cannes. And Matt is a designer with his own studio called Italic.
OUR ORIGINAL CONTENT
Please help us get out there to do more of what we love; creating awesome content for Indoek. Here are a few of our favorite pieces of original content we have created and produced ourselves so far:
The Anatomy of Owen Wright
Tuesday With Laura
Over the span of 150 weeks, we curated a volume of new music every Monday which we aptly called, "Mixtape Mondays". Here are links to a few of our favorite mixtapes from the series:
Indoek Guide to NYC
We were so stoked on the Quik Pro event in NY that we decided to create our own guide to NYC in the form of an interactive PDF to download to your smart phone. This was very popular for the onslaught of surfers who invaded the city. Check it out here:
OUR GOAL - NEW CONTENT IN THE WORKS
Our goal is to create more free, original content pieces with high production value, just like the ones we have already created. Since we are a bi-coastal surf culture blog, we aim to focus our original content in that specific direction by featuring some of the characters in the video montage shown above. We need your support to help fund our project. Here is some of the new web content that we aim to produce:
MINUTES - Minutes will be an ongoing Indoek original content series that focuses on particular characters in our creative surf culture community on both coasts. Who are they and what is their story? What is their day-to-day routine and what makes them tick? Each episode or installment will focus on a specific person and will consist of an intimate photo essay and interview and/or short film piece.
SURF SHACKS - As the name describes, we want to see where our favorite people in the creative surf community call their homes. Not everyone lives right on the beach -- especially the urban surfers who we like to celebrate. We hope to cover a very diverse range of surfers' homes in this series; from NYC apartments, to cottages in the northeast, to Topanga cabin hideaways, to ecclectic beach houses of various architectural styles on both coasts. Each episode or installment will focus on a specific person and their dwelling that will consist of an intimate photo essay and interview and/or short film piece.
To better showcase our content, we are also working on a beautiful new site redesign that will greatly improve the user experience of our site and help feature our new content in the best possible way. Here is a sneak peek at what it will look like:
First and foremost, thank you so much for helping us reach our goal! We really appreciate your support, which is why we have picked some awesome stuff to reward YOU with for helping us out:
To show our appreciation of your support -- big or small, we will send you a postcard good for 1 wave on us, redeemable at either Rockaway or Malibu. That’s right; if one of us (Matt or Drew) is behind you about to take off with priority, feel free to drop right in! (*Offer only good for a one-time use)
We collaborated with our friend, Todd St. John to create our own limited edition wax kit. This unique design is reminiscent of surfboard shaping planes. The container well is approximately 2.75 inches and is a perfect fit for most circular wax molds, but also fits some rectangular shapes. The comb tines are on the bottom edge and the scraper is a detachable lid that is seamlessly held in place by two magnets. The process and design have a focus on sustainability and minimal waste. Each kit is precious and unique, their grain and subtle imperfections adding to their hand-crafted look. The sturdy Nogal hardwood is a perfect material as it is both durable and sustainable – not to mention it has a naturally waxy, smooth texture that blends the wax residue without a mess. All kits were made from fallen Nicaraguan Nogal trees.
Our friends at East Surf Co seek to provide an alternative to conventional paraffin and petroleum based wax. They have in turn developed a resilient, organic solution. Their original formula uses beeswax as a base along with other natural waxes and higher amounts of tackifying resin to create a superior, long lasting surf wax. Trust us, it is great wax!
CHOOSING REWARD OPTIONS
We have a few options for backers to choose from with some of our reward levels. For instance, if you donate $50, you can choose what tee style you'd like and what size. Or if you donate $100, you can choose between 4 different art prints. You will not be able to make any of these selections until after May 8th, if and when we reach our goal. If we hit our goal, we will send out backer surveys to make sure you get all the options you wanted.
Domestic (US only) shipping costs are included with all reward levels. In other words, shipping to all US backers is free! We have added a small shipping fee to every reward level for international (non-US) backers. These amounts are specified in the reward level copy to the right.
HOW TO HELP
The biggest way you can help and show your support is to donate so we can fund our project. If you have already done so, thanks! Wanna help even more? Please share this link to our Kickstarter page with as many people as you can (or feel comfortable with). OR you can 'like' this project on Facebook and post to your timeline. Every little bit will help us reach our goal. Thanks again for your support!
Risks and challenges
When it comes to fulfilling all of our rewards, there are a few very minimal risks. We do have a surplus of wax kits, tees and stickers already made and ready to ship once funded, but if we happen to run out of stock, there could be slight delay in shipment as we make more. The art prints will be produced depending on how many backers we get at that level. Same goes for the first run of our Indoek zine, which is currently in the works.
The challenges we face after achieving our goal are fairly minimal as we are considered experts in our field. Matt is a seasoned, talented designer and photographer. Drew is also an experienced and awarded cinematographer, photographer and filmaker. Together they are able to create great original content and tell beautiful visual stories. Your support will only help them do what they do best, and more of it.
Creating great video content takes a lot of time and is expensive to produce. With both of us living on opposite coasts, it makes things even more difficult. However, this weakness also becomes our strength since we have direct access to a lot of interesting characters on both coasts at all times. Your support will go toward associated production costs such as; travel to and from shoot locations, film, equipment rentals, expenses to cover costs during shoot days, any other production expenses that we need to outsource, etc.
As of now, we have been funding our own content projects ourselves without any ads or sponsorship. To create more great stuff, we need your help.
