About this project
I've gotten a ton of great feedback on the Kickstarter and campaign. I will be making massive changes to the game and project and be relaunching a few months down the road. Please hit like on the Facebook Page and follow me on Twitter @IncendiaryGames to stay up to date where I take this game and for the relaunch.
The prototype has been approved by Oculus and is now up on Oculus Share. Feel free to check it out and I'll be regularly submitting new builds based on feedback.
What is Death of Dragons?
Death of Dragons is a virtual reality exclusive third person top down view action roleplaying game inspired by Path of Exile, Diablo, and Zelda.
Dragons have returned to the world. They were once ancient legends and people only dared spoke of them in whispers. They have returned with a vengeance. Rumors have it they hunt for a powerful artifact, an artifact so powerful that it can control any and possibly all dragonkin. This artifact was secretly guarded by the Elder Dragon council. If it falls into the wrong hands it could mean the Death of Dragons.
A quiet, peaceful, sleepy seaside town had the dead rise up against them. Adventurer! You're called to action to take care of this menace and put a stop to whoever raised the dead.

Virtual reality besides adding immersion allows us to use head tracking in innovative ways. Death of Dragons uses head tracking to target monsters or specific body parts on boss monsters. For instance, you can target the wing of a dragon and shoot it out the sky.
Death of Dragons is a fun new take on a classic dungeon crawler. Explore new worlds in virtual reality. Slay lots of enemies. Seek out powerful artifacts for either the greater good or your own gain. Fight off dragons that approach you overhead from behind.
We're working on exploring other innovative uses of virtual reality to dungeon crawler games. We're also working on a fun loot system that will be VR friendly.
Why use virtual reality for a third person view game? Aren't all virtual reality games supposed to be first person? Lots of reasons! Virtual reality adds a ton of immersion and presence even for a third person game and is awesome for god style games. Having no body over a body that doesn't match yours is less cognitively dissonant. For most people, third person locomotion, ie avatar movement, is less prone to motion sickness than a first person game. VR allows us to explore new interesting game mechanics, puzzles, and experiences that we don't get in a flat game.
There are three character classes you can play as:
The Necromancer uses his dark magic to summon an undead minion to fight by his side and flings spells into his enemies.
The Ranger fights with her panther and trusty bow. She fires debilitating arrows at her enemies which can stun, disorient, or snare her targets.
The sword and board Fighter gets up in his foes using his shield to deflect, and possibly reflect, all kinds of attacks and spells. He uses his sword to tactically attack at opportune moments.
- Designed exclusively for virtual reality.
- Fight, loot, and explore the world through three or more character classes.
- Slay powerful dragons, other bosses, and their minions.
- Explore three acts.
- Content for everyone - LGBTQ content included!
- Intuitive head tracking targeting.
- 5-10 hours of gameplay
- 1 hour musical soundtrack.
- and more if stretch goals are met!
- Left Stick - Move
- Right Bumper - Lock on/Unlock the target you're looking at
- A - Jump
- B - Cast spell
- X - Scythe Attack
- Y - Summon undead minion
- Left Stick - Move
This is a very early demo that includes the first level and the necromancer character class, some undead, and the dragon that has been raising them. This is to give you a taste of gameplay and it's not necessarily indicative of the final game. A gamepad is required.
Development is still ongoing. I'm currently getting the Gear VR version ready and it will be in the Concepts section in the next couple of weeks. Become a backer and turn Death of Dragons into a long adventure.
Kickstarter is an awesome opportunity for indie developers and for VR enthusiasts. The original Oculus Rift started out here on Kickstarter!
Without the support of the VR community we will not be able to complete Death of Dragons. Investors are still shy on VR as most of them haven't tried it yet. Plus, we rather would remain independent game developers than work on Game of War Crushville VR.
We'll be using the funds raised to hire artists to make this game gorgeous, bring on more team members, and expand on the content, mechanics, and length of gameplay.
This is your chance to back an exciting VR game and make your own contributions to it!
$62,500 - Additional platform vote: Gear VR port or PlayStation VR
$75,000 - Additional character class vote: Barbarian or Rogue
- $100,000 - New Feature vote: Co-op Multiplayer or a 20 hour Single Player Expansion Pack
- More stretch goals to come!
Stretch Goal Voting
When this Kickstarter reaches each funding goal, the community gets to vote for the goal! Yes, you get to determine where we go next!
Why a voting system? We want to only work on additional features that the community is excited about and wants the most. We don't want to over-promise and so we offer stretch goals that are meaningful, not just reach goals because the base game is popular.
How Voting Works
There are two new vote-able stretch goals that unlock per level. For the next 48 hours after reaching the next stretch goal starting at 1:00 PM PST a link to a Google Survey form will be posted. At that time all backers may vote once for each stretch goal choice. After 48 hours voting will close and the result will be announced.
Popular stretch goals that didn't make the vote may come back later on for a second chance.
- Oculus Rift DK2 or higher virtual reality headset (Other headsets supported as they are released.)
- Gamepad (Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers supported.)
- Nvidia GTX 780 or AMD 290 or higher graphics card.
- Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
- Windows 7 SP1 or newer.
Risks and challenges
Our main challenge is why we are here on Kickstarter - funding. The VR market is still limited but growing.
Video game development, especially virtual reality development, is very challenging and time consuming. I have five years of experience in the video games industry shipping AAA games such as Grey Goo and Tome: Immortal Arena. This project is laser focused on a manageable fun game experience. I've already delivered a demo that I hope everyone enjoys.
The biggest risks is that the game takes longer than expected to develop. We've kept the scope down to something that is manageable with my resources and expertise. With the simple rewards and not doing physical products such as t-shirts it allows me to focus on what I do best - creating awesome VR video games. With the stretch goal voting system I'll be working on features the community desires the most, and not overstretching myself if the base game itself becomes popular.
Another risk is that we run out of funding or for some other reason be unable to continue development. We've mitigated that risk by setting an appropriate amount of funding for the project. If that were to happen there is various options available to me such as outside investors, bank loans, etc. You will get the latest stable build if for any reason we're unable to continue development.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
