Two years ago, I designed this crazy map for film lovers, with more than 1,800 movies connected to each other. It's now time to go further and explore the beautiful landscapes of Movieland with a new set of fully illustrated maps...
Here's the story...
The Great Map of Movieland is the result of a long and passionate journey through cinema history and I was so happy to share it with the world.
Thanks to you, the project went viral and the map was seen all over the planet.
Thousands of movie buffs got their hands on the map, including a few brilliant directors...
So all of this is very cool, but since the beginning I've been wondering what the landscapes of this imaginary world would look like! This is why I decided to team up with Alex Chauvel, a very talented illustrator based in Berlin.
He began to draw the roads, the hills, rivers and wonders hidden on the map... Let's say that if my original design was like Google Maps, we kind of activated Satellite Mode.
The illustrated Maps of Movieland
So we came up with 4 brand new posters.
First, an original design, crowded with movie references and a bunch of trains (I love trains) around a big fat Movieland Sign in white letters.
Then, an illustrated look at three of the most iconic regions of the original map...
Once again, the creation of these new Movieland posters was a long and intensive process. Especially for the Movieland Sign poster, which was a completely new design.
For each part of the map, we tried to use the best graphical options to illustrate the movies. If some pictograms are very obvious and literal, others can be a bit more edgy! When it was possible, we also made these interact with the field or with each other...
In order to maintain visual balance and readability, but also to keep the look and feel of a map (which is what Movieland is all about), we could not illustrate every single movie in each area. So once again, we had to make tough choices!
The Great Map of Movieland (2nd Edition)
This campaign is also a new opportunity to get The Great Map of Movieland, featuring its +1,800 must-see movies.
This one is still very similar from the First Edition, but includes a few additions (such as Muriel's Wedding, Phantom Thread, Black Panther, La Captive or Something wild...).
If the campaign is a success, we should be able to illustrate more areas of the map. Think about Sci-Fi Mountains, Action Bay, Valley of Love or the Western Desert...
I'm also looking for publishers around the World that would be interested in translating the Movieland book. The success of this new campaign could be a huge help on that matter...
David Honnorat is a 34 year-old cinephile designer based in Paris, France. He couldn't manage to list his ten favorite movies, so he decided to arrange thousands on a giant map. Film critic for magazines and podcasts. Absolute fan of Quentin Tarantino, François Truffaut, Howard Hawks or Paul Verhoeven... Would probably still say that Brian De Palma is the greatest filmmaker of all time.
Alex Chauvel is 33, he lives in Berlin and he's a comic artist and an illustrator. When young and wild, he co-founded éditions polystyrène, specialized in crazy books. Most notable comics: Toutes les mers par temps calme (éditions polystyrène), Todd le géant s'est fait voler son slip (The Hoochie Coochie) and Les Aventures de la vie (Hécatombe). Big fan of Akira Kurosawa, Sergio Leone and Edgar Wright.
