Shipping Announcement

Posted by The Impossible Project (Creator)

Dear Impossible Backers,

Without any further ado, we are proud and happy to announce that we will start shipping Instant Labs exclusively to Kickstarter Backers on or even before 29th July 2013!

It took us 9 months to get from prototype to mass production and finally shipping. We estimated to be able to do this in 4-5 months, but this was way too optimistic. Many things had to be changed and improved, after we had proper samples in our hands. Then we had to build for production (not a few hundreds in total, but thousands per month). This tripled the production time of many molds. Our pilot users all over the world tested the device hard and we had again to retool some things.

We sincerely apologize for the delay, but we think you will be really happy with what you are going to receive.

We have been working hard for the last 1.5 years to deliver something we are really proud of and we hope you will love it, it will enrich your lives by putting some digital memories in the palm of your hand (or on your fridge :-).

Your support was crucial for us. First, of course, financially, but it also helped us to understand the true potential of the product. Listening to comments and feedback we received from backers definitely improved the final product tremendously.

We are now preparing the shipping process to the address you provided. If you need to make changes to your delivery address, please email us at service@theimpossible-project.com

The Instant Lab Packaging

We are proud to present to you the visuals for the packaging.Photo-3DThe exact details of the package stay a secret (expect some goodies!).

It is a serious package you will receive: 1.05 kilograms / 2.30 pounds (plus the film packs).
 We hope you will like the packaging as much as we do.

The Impossible Project App

Apple has not only officially approved our packaging, but also our app in the App Store (it is not yet public though). The app is the Swiss Army knife for all instant desires and acts as a real bridge between the analog and digital worldsThe heart of the app is the Instant Lab exposure functionality.. You can select a photo from your albums, or just shoot one on the spot right from the app. Then you scale and crop the photo until you are happy with the selection. Select the film type in the device (color or black-white). Then just lay the iPhone in the cradle. The app will auto-detect once it lays in the cradle and then automatically start the exposure. You just have to open and close the shutter, as the light will indicate to you: light on = open shutter, exposure in progress, light off = close shutter, exposure finished. Then eject the photo, wait until it has developed and enjoy.

In addition we included some all new Impossible features we're really excited about - A Scanner, a mobile version of the Impossible User Gallery, and a Filmshop for quick and easy restocking of films. We're testing and improving these every day and can't wait to show them off.

Color processing

In one of our next updates we will give you insight in the big efforts that went into designing the core function of the app. 1000s of photos have been processed, referenced and analyzed. We tried to learn about the special behavior of iPhone screens (4 and 5 are, of course, quite different) and how this relates to Instant Film. This is only the start of a journey. We will constantly improve this app the more we learn about our own tests, but we also expect to get feedback from our users and their ideas. At this stage we want to thank the color scientists of CRIC in Barcelona, Spain (www.cric.cat) that helped us greatly to convert digital color into instant color, strongly supported by our scientists and quality management team in Enschede, Netherlands - our former Polaroid factory.

Next Update

Please expect the next update with videos from the assembly floor by the end of 1st week of July.

We are working day and night with all suppliers to have the fastest process possible. Thank you for your support.

Your Impossible Team

      Is there an instructional sheet, or portion of the iPhone app, that tells you, how to load the film into the Instant Lab?

      @hatim:
      we are sorry about that. we realized the typo but it was already to late to edit the update.

      @dave and eduardo:

      I can not wait to have it in my hands! The packaging is very nice, simple!
      The expected increase any desire. You are great!

    15. Jonathan on

      Sweet. Beautiful effort guys! Looking forward to using it.

    16. Dave Knapik on

      @Eduardo I think if Apple changes the size, they can make new cradles for this. I believe it was designed with that in mind. But then again, if I had to keep an old phone around, no big: it's not like I don't keep 1970s cameras around. ;) But I think they'll have us covered for Apple's eventual inevitable changes one day.

    17. Dave Knapik on

      Sweet baby Jesus! We have a DATE! Thanks so much. Question: will the app have a Cool film setting? I have some old gen I hope to use with this. Thanks!!

    18. Kaina PoncePié on

      the app overrides your current screen brightness setting.

    21. The Impossible Project Creator on

      @bendy:
      the Instant Lab ships with a cradle for iPhone 4/4s and 5.
      we do of course plan to offer additional cradles in the future (future iPhone models, Android, etc)
      you will be able to easily exchange the cradle on the Instant Lab.

    22. ONG YU ZHI on

      I'm glad the wait is almost over. I hope that the final product will not be deprecated shortly after we receive it because of an iPhone form factor change with Apple's September revision.

    26. DQM on

      Any updates on Android phones? The app looks fantastic BTW.

    27. bendy tan on

      Will you send an iPhone 5 cradle along? Or we need to buy on our own
