THANK YOU YARGO SUPPORTERS!
"Full Sail Ahead" AND "Favorable Winds" stretch goals unlocked and we still have time to earn "Neptune's Favor"! (See "On the Horizon Section" Below)
Yargo is a high seas, take-no-prisoners adventure in a handmade wooden pirate chest. If Chess and Battleship had a baby that was adopted by Edward "Blackbeard" Teach, all the old sailors would call it Yargo.
Yargo is a turn-based, strategic battle game for two players. Fight from ship to ship and find out who is the true master of the seas. Fate will tip the balance but cunning tactics trump all. Although you won't be needing to check the rulebook once you get the hang of Yargo, you'll need a deep level of strategy if you expect to win. Because there are so many choices, actions, and strategies, every game is different and exciting.
Yargo is easy to learn and each game only takes about 20 minutes. Each player controls a pirate ship crewed by 1 Captain, 11 Pirates, and 1 cheeky Monkey. The last crew standing wins but there are several means to this end; you can sink your opponent's ship, disable their cannons, or board them for close combat. Basic turn structure is as follows:
- Players start with 4 coins every turn
- On your turn, spend your coins on actions from the action menu
- Many actions require you to flip coins to determine outcome
What kind of actions you say? There's basic actions like movement, reloading muskets, and firing cannons... and then there's the advanced actions! To name a few: Mer-friends could save a pirate who would otherwise be eaten by a shark, Monkey Sabotage gives your monkey a chance to blow the enemy's powder stores sky high, and Captain's Orders allows a second chance at a failed action!
One of the most common concerns we've heard from people has been: "Why coin flips instead of dice?". The best proof is a live example: in this short (<2 min) video, we compare a turn firing cannons in a "Broadside" action (no flips required) versus firing cannons individually (max of 3 flips per cannon).
You can see both tactics have there own advantage and coin flipping doesn't disrupt the flow of the game. Here's the flow chart showing how individual cannon fire is resolved:
The ship design is simple and elegant. Each ship's 4 cannons are in-line with the special spaces behind them: the Ammo Point (to reload cannons), the Crow's Nest (for sharpshooting), the Anchor Chain (climb aboard from the water), and the Treasure Chest (promote a new Captain). Disable any of these spaces with cannon fire and your enemy will be at a serious disadvantage! Whether you're a beginner or an advanced board gamer, you'll find what you're looking for with Yargo.

We love this game and can't wait to play it with you! Any over-funding will be used to get your orders to you quicker and to fufill these stretch goals:
We're launching on Kickstarter because we want to share Yargo with as many people as we can. In the future, we'd like to see a second production run- with more box styles and in more languages!
Each element has been carefully researched to find the best value for our customers without sacrificing quality. We investigated outsourcing and different builds but were unsatisfied with what we found. This is why we're building these boxes ourselves right here in Portland, Oregon. If you have any questions on how the different budget categories break down, please ask!

*PLEASE NOTE ALL IMAGES SHOWN ARE PROTOTYPES AND FINAL PRODUCT MAY VARY SLIGHTLY AS WE IMPROVE OUR PROCESS*
This is our first Kickstarter, our number one goal is to make certain that you're happy you chose to back this project! Here are some of the things we've done to ensure a successful and speedy delivery of Yargo:
* We've kept our initial launch small scale: a maximum of 100 wooden gameboards this round. With our experience in professional wood products manufacturing we have the utmost confidence we can deliver.
* We will be manufacturing the majority of our components ourselves. (The only outside manufacturing is our brass tokens and we have 2 suppliers arranged in case one fails.)
* We've done a ton of research (including watching similar projects and learning from their success/failure) and have made sure to account for all hidden costs.
If you have ANY questions or concerns please let us know right away. We will be keeping you constantly up-to-date on the latest Yargo tidings. Check out our blog and social media to see how we document our process!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
