The world needs transparent companies & products that do good.
The Impakt Browser Extension for Chrome and Firefox helps align your spending with your values everywhere you shop online.
As you view products online, Impakt aggregates public data and news articles to deliver personalized Alerts, Company Profiles, and alternative Recommendations in any desktop e-commerce environment.
We’re launching Impakt because we believe the products we buy should do good in the world. But right now, it's too hard to know the real effect of what we buy, and too easy for companies to hide from the effect they have on people’s lives. So we’re changing that.
Online Stores Don't Show You Real Information
They only show you advertising. Today, if you go anywhere to shop online, chances are this is what you'll see:
Lots of buttons. Lots of marketing.
These pages are designed to:
- Make you spend as much money as possible,
- Make you spend as quickly as possible,
- Only shows you what the seller wants you to see.
Instant Info on Company Ethics!
Know who you're actually buying from.
Swap in Ethical Alternatives!
See your most meaningful options, and make choices you can be confident in -- faster than ever before!
Who Decides What's Right & Wrong?
You do! Impakt's User Settings are customizable so you can learn what matters most to you about the brands you purchase.
Download Once & Keep Shopping!
Adding your voice to the movement is easy! Just download the Impakt Browser Extension, and keep shopping. If there’s something about a product or retailer you should be aware of, we’ll let you know.
Our Data Sources (with Real Examples)
PUBLIC & GOVERNMENT DATA. Public and freely accessible data such FEC, SEC, and USPTO filings offer insight into lobbying activity, how much top executives are paid, which companies own which brands, and more -- e.g. here is a campaign donation by a fast-food chain.
INDUSTRY REPORTS. Universities, NGOs, and market researchers aggregate corporate data and solicit disclosures on issues like water usage, labor practices, and more -- e.g. here is deforestation risk data on hundreds of European manufacturers.
NEWS ARTICLES. Reputable and mainstream news sources provide important updates on the breaches, lawsuits, and scandals that plague the worlds biggest companies -- e.g. here for an exposé on a global manufacturer of packaged foods.
The Easy Part: Browser Extension
Once we build the Company Ethics Database, delivering Company Profiles through the Browser Extension on any product webpage is straightforward. Top rated e-commerce browser extensions already deliver pricing or promotional info wherever you shop online. Impakt is simply the first to deliver info on corporate ethics.
The Hard Part: Company Ethics Database
The real challenge is to develop machine learning algorithms that (1) scrape our public Data Sources, (2) crawl for news articles containing relevant information, and (3) maintain accurate Company Profiles in the Company Ethics Database.
Our initial release will feature some simple algorithms along with a curated foundational set of profiles; the eventual goal is to use that as a training set for more advanced machine learning systems.
Risks and challenges
PRIVATE COMPANIES: We will not cover every company to begin with. There is much more data available on public companies, thanks to mandatory regulatory and corporate disclosures. We’ll rely on news scrapes, industry research reports, watchdog groups, and user validation (see False Positives below) to build Company Profiles for private companies over time.
FALSE POSITIVES: When attributing scraped news articles to products, our initial release will have a ~15% false positive rate: e.g., mixing up Miami Dolphins hats with a tuna brand that harms dolphins. They should be fairly obvious, and we encourage users to submit an Error Report. As our user base grows and our algorithms improve, the frequency of false positives will decrease over time.
THRIFT, AUCTION, CONSIGNMENT: Impakt relies on information scraped from product webpages to retrieve Company Profiles from the Ethics Database. Impakt does not establish provenance or validate vendor identity in peer-to-peer marketplace environments like eBay, Etsy, or Facebook Marketplace.
In the event that anything else doesn't go as planned, whether it's a delay in the development timeline, release date, or something else, we promise to communicate right away and work around the clock to correct the issue.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
