The Stone Lion is our attempt to create a game that incorporates a mix of 2 of our great passions. With the first one being the board games themselves. The other one is the fascinating world of animals. The outcome of this attempt is a simple, fun and competitive game with an educational character, suitable for the whole family. It is a board game but it can also be played as a strictly card game.
Also it is our very first game creation so we hope you are intrigued enough to support our campaign and help us reach our goal. Furthermore, if your support exceeds our main goal we'll be able to offer you some fascinating expansions for extra fun, play and learn experience.
Hope you enjoy the game presentation that follows!
NOTE: Some of the game components featured in the pictures may differ from the final product in some aspects such as shades of color. Any change that may occure will only be an improvement of the current display.
To each explorer pawn corresponds a color matching token that serves to make it easier for the rest of the players to recognise which pawn belongs to each player.
The backbone of The Stone Lion are the wonderous facts that accompany each animal that is featured in our cards. After a long research, we managed to gather those numerical facts and most of them are very accurate but some of them are slightly manipulated in order to serve the game purpose or due to lack of adequate information. For each attribute, we have chosen the highest value ever recorded, even if that corresponds to a unique case. Very often, that value was recorded when the respective animal was in captivity. For example, an animal while in captivity, can reach higher weight than being out in the wild.
Since our campaign appeals to a global audience, each card contains 2 metrical units to cover most regular cases. Such as speed, which is measured in both miles per hour and kilometers per hour.
Analyzing the attributes:
WEIGHT: Refers to the maximum weight ever recorded for an animal either in captivity or wildlife.
SIZE: The largest attribute is used. For example, for a panther we refer to its length rather than its height. For a bird we refer to its wingspan and so on.
LIFESPAN: Refers to the maximum lifespan ever recorded for an animal either in captivity or wildlife. In some species such as insects, the female usually lives longer than the male, so in any case we always use the lifespan of the gender that presents the highest value.
SPEED: To serve the game purpose, we have selected the highest speed that an animal develops out of all known scenarios. For example for the bird species we have chosen the dive speed.
TOXICITY: Since we have no numerical data to describe how toxic an animal can be, we have made a rough estimation that illustrates the impact an animal may have on another animal or human being, either by injecting venom or by spreading bacteria through its bite. For example a komodo dragon doesn't inject venom when biting but the bacteria it carries can become lethal in an open wound.
On the left upper part of the card, you may find the symbol that corresponds to the environment in which the animal belongs. It can be land, water or air. Sometimes an animal, e.g. an amphibian, can feature 2 of those symbols.
Educational aspect of the animal cards:
There are some features on the card, that don't serve the gameplay but only the educational aspect of the game.
For example the category in which the animal belongs such as Mammals, Arthropodes, etc has informative purpose only.
Apart from the category, there are tones of other fascinating info we learned along the way and we thought we would share them with you. To make that possible we have incorporated a QR code in each animal card that you can scan using an app with your smartphone or tablet. It will lead you to a wikipedia link where you can learn more things about the animal.
Last but not least, on some of the cards you can find 2 symbols a yellow or a red one that indicate if an animal is threatened or seriously endangered.
Following is an overview of the gameplay:
- You deal 5 animal cards and 2 special cards to each player.
- You roll the die and you move your pawn accordingly.
- You follow the special commands on the squares (if any) and in order to move ahead you have to either defend yourself against an animal attack or use one of your animal cards to initiate an attack against a player of your choice.
- Be sure to double check the square the player who attacks is on, it is crucial to the outcome of a fight.
- Your goal is to reach the end of the board and win the final fight.
- Like in a poker game, you need to develop different strategies for each section of the game which include bluffing and foreseeing your opponents' strengths and weaknesses and taking advantage of them.
- Sometimes to get out of difficult situations you may have to use one of your special cards. Beware, you only get a few so you need to use them wisely!
- In some cases you can co-operate with other players in order to slow down the player who is ahead.
- Always be prepared! You may have to play even if it's not your turn!

Risks and challenges
We know that there are potential delays that may occur with some of the products that are produced over seas. For example delays in production, shipping, and customs.
We have estimated the delivery for October 2018, but please understand this is an estimate. Also we'd like to mention that it is possible that some regions may receive their pledges sooner than others. That is unfortunately beyond our forces to control.
Thanks in advance for your understanding!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
