ima magazine connects the people and culture of Boston and Japan. The not-for-profit, freely distributed magazine is the first Japanese-English bilingual magazine for Japanese or Japanese Americans who live in Boston, and Bostonians who are interested in Japan. “Ima (今, pronounced ee-ma)” in Japanese, means “Now.” This magazine is about what is happening in Boston’s Japanese community.

In the future, the magazine will be supported by advertising revenue. But for our very first issue, we need your help on printing cost. Your donation will also help with postage, distribution, various fees, and, while majority will be a volunteer work, help pay the writers, editors, designers, and photographers who contribute their talents. Your help will directly help our very first issue, aiming to go print in late-January/early-February, into existence.

Our goal is to raise $4,000 by the end of 2012. Our campaign ends on December 31, 2012, at 11:59 PM (Eastern Time). We humbly request your support.

What will be covered in ima magazine?

ima magazine is a magazine that covers and analyzes the news, culture, entertainment, sports, area events that concerns Japanese & Japanese Americans living in Boston, and for Bostonians interested in Japan. ima magazine aims to provide a voice of the Japanese community in Boston.

ima magazine will start out as a quarterly magazine in 2013, and by 2014, it will be bi-monthly. We hope to be up to as much as 10 issues a year in the near future.

ima will also be available online at imamag.com

How does Kickstarter work?

Kickstarter is a crowd-funding website. It is an online fundraising platform that enables creators like us to ask for direct support from people like you. However, Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing proposition. If we don't reach the fundraising goal of $4,000 by our deadline, December 31, 2012, your credit card will not be charged, and we will not get any money at all. Please do not let that happen.

Join us in making ima magazine a reality by contributing and being a part of history. In exchange for your pledge, your name will be printed in our “Thank you” page of our inaugural issue. All payments are processed through Amazon.com.

Here’s how you can help us make us through Kickstarter:
  • Press the green “Back This Project” button on the right top.
  • Enter your pledge amount & select your reward.
  • Confirm payment via Amazon.com.
  • Tell your friends about ima magazine. (optional, but highly recommended!

Where does the money go?

Every dollar you donate will go directly towards production of the magazine. Our biggest and most pressing expense is the printing cost. We aim to print 5,000 copies of an all-color 24-page magazine, which you can pick up for free at area shops, restaurants, and grocery stores. Since we are a new magazine, and have not established credit history with our printer, we need to pay the entire printing cost up-front. Without a physical printed issue, it is hard for us to get advertizing money just yet. See our problem? This is where you come in. To publish our very first issue of ima magazine, we humbly ask for your support.

The money will also help defray cost of our basic production and post-production expenses, including:
  • Help getting the word out
  • Various fees related to establishing as a legitimate organization
  • Coordinate writers and photographers
  • Editing stories
  • Designing the pages
  • Copy editing/proof-reading work
  • Final pre-press work to get files ready for printer
  • Getting permissions and physically distributing the magazines, at restaurants and store fronts in and around Boston and through out New England
  • Postage
  • Kickstarter fees and rewards (Amazon takes credit card fee, and kickstarter takes 5%)

This is not even taking count of expense for selling advertising, coordinating with advertisers and getting paid for it. And keep in mind, most of us are doing the work as pro bono publico, but we feel it is important to establish a business model with right editorial budget. We feel, for the long-term success of this magazine, that rewarding content producers -- such as writers, editors, photographers and designers -- for their contributions however small amount.

Who is behind ima magazine?

ima magazine is a shared dream of five individuals:

Etsuko Yashiro, President/Managing Editor
Etsuko is the owner of Graymist studio, a Nantucket Basket weaving studio and shop. Etsuko founded a non-profit group, TEWASSA, in 2011, which is a long-term volunteer project devoted to Japan Earthquake and Tsunami relief through handmade arts+crafts.

Atsushi Tanimura, Publisher
As a president of Japanese Resource Exchange (JREX), a Boston area not-for-profit networking organization, Atsushi has been offering information and support about starting up or running a business to the Boston Japanese community.

Daigo Fujiwara, Editor-in-Chief
Daigo is a career publishing professional. He currently works at Harvard Business Review, but has also worked at The Boston Globe, The Christian Science Monitor, Inc. magazine and Fast Company magazine. Creating a local bilingual magazine for the Japanese Community would be a realized dream.

Ken Kimura, Creative Director

With her strong business development background, not only being recognized as one of the top Realtors in the area, she has also successfully introduced and applied creative sales and marketing strategies to bring out best possible results in various industries.

We also have support from local Japanese organizations that make up the Japanese community in and around Boston and New England. Our Editorial Advisory Board will include the Consulate General of Japan in Boston; Japan Society of Boston; New England Japanese American Citizens League; Japanese Language School of Greater Boston; JREX, Japanese Resource Exchange; and NEJETAA, an alumni association of JET programs in New England.

Kickstarter

Kickstarter

  • 在ボストン日本国総領事館 Consulate General of Japan in Boston;
  • ボストン日本協会 Japan Society of Boston;
New England Japanese American Citizens League
NEJETAA, an alumni association of JET programs in New England.
  • JREX Japanese Resource Exchange
