Mazer Maker will feature easy to use tools for both PNC and SHMUP creation. If we developed the tool into a full standalone item it would be community focused but hopefully still be robust enough for pros.
We have thought about dynamic lighting both using shaders and hard pixeling it in. We're still experimenting with what will work best for our art aesthetic.
Looking good! Is Mazer Maker just for the adventure-game sections or the shmup sections as well? Since you've mentioned making it a stand alone tool, would it be for a communty-focused Starr Mazer a-la Mario Maker or a professional but simple tool like Twine and GameMaker?
Also, have you thought about adding some sort of dynamic lighting to Brik's face in the shmup mode? It looks a bit weird that his face is orange when there's no visible orange lights in the ship or the environment he's traversing. Anyway, keep up the good work!
It totally does. Content creators needed a very easy/seamless way to work in Starr Mazer and the Mazer Maker tool is our answer. Auston was inspired by the ease of use when creating fun levels in Mario Maker.

We are definitely looking into fully developing Mazer Maker into a standalone tool. Starr Mazer is our ultimate priority currently. Also, Warner Brothers is not our publisher. May I ask where you might have heard that?
Will it be possible to make Mazer Maker open to the public? Or will Warner Bros., your publisher, veto that idea?
