At the nexus of art, spirituality, activism, and environment, I am examining how different ways of “knowing”--in the mind, body, and heart--can influence how we create the world we want to live in. I am seeking to develop a visual language for these three interconnected ways of experiencing: intellectual knowledge is well understood through words, numbers, and maps, while embodied and heart-centered knowledge require additional research and practice to visualize.
The site of my current work, Imagination of Salvation, is Al Azraq, Jordan. Over the last 30 years, resource mismanagement has decimated this community-owned oasis paradise. Today, millions of dollars are spent on projects that further separate people from their land and history.
I started Imagination of Salvation in early 2018 as an investigation into how we can believe in audacious dreams, as individuals, and as communities. Since then I have made more than 20 artworks, including site-specific explorations. Many of these will be shown in a solo exhibition at IA&A at Hillyer gallery, in Washington DC, in April 2019.
The residency in Greece will give me the opportunity to devote an entire month to developing this work, in the context of the history, myth, and vibrant contemporary art and scientific communities. I aim to connect to others working in related areas so my work can grow, evolve, and transform into its next stage. During the residency in Athens I expect to make large-scale mixed media collages and contribute to the broader dialogue about environmental protection and living from our hearts.
The residency is unfunded, so I am reaching out to friends, colleagues, supporters, and dreamers for assistance in to cover travel, residency fee and lodging. and art supplies. I hope you are excited to see what comes out of this experience and can contribute to making this dream a reality!
Risks and challenges
I am committed to attend the Athena Standards residency in June, 2019. The time frame for finished projects is always somewhat difficult to predict but I expect to have at least one work close to or finished at the end of the month.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
