You can engage with the tarot, explore the world created by L. Frank Baum in his 14 original Oz books, or, heck, play a psychedelic hand of Cribbage with this gorgeous deck. It's all up to your imagination.
We're Anna and Mark. A while back, we published a unique comic, based on the Wizard of Oz, called Dorothy. It successfully ran for 7 issues, and was collected into a trade paperback. It received critical praise from both comic book and Oz aficionados.
As Illogical Associates, we love bringing art and stories to the world. While contemplating our next series of Oz comics we got to talking about the iconic imagery of Oz and how it fits so well with the traditional symbols of the Tarot. The four lands of Oz, the four suits of the tarot; The Magician card, The Wizard... the parallels kept coming. Within hours we realized we could use our friends in the comic book world to show everyone else these remarkable connections.
We could create an entire tarot deck illustrated with Baum's characters. Everything from The Fool to the King of Coins and from the Emerald City to Mount Munch: a celebration of imagination, and an exploration of the human psyche, through Oz, Tarot, and Comics.
From a certain angle, a Tarot deck is a 78 panel comic that you can arrange in any order, to tell any story in the world. The signs and meanings on the cards can unlock your understanding of your past, future, or fictional situations. And how cool would it be to see primordial images represented by classic characters drawn by contemporary comic book people?
So we contacted popular comics professionals whom Anna has met through signings at her shop (Illusive Comics & Games), old friends of ours in the industry, and other artists we have long admired. To our utter delight, most of them replied that they were available and would love to be part of the project.
Along with our collaborators - whose styles range from clean, dynamic action heroes to apocalyptic grunge oil squids - we've put together an anthology of amazing art, in the form of a Wizard of Oz tarot deck, created by some of the keenest comic book artists and graphic designers extant.

The bulk of the funds that we raise will be to compensate our artists for their work. Many are being incredibly generous with their time, but it's The Rule: Artists Get Paid.
Our next expense is physical. We plan to use Customized Playing Cards to print our deck. The cards will be 3.5 x 5" in size on Casino Quality 300 gsm paper with a tuck box. We think this is a good balance between quality and affordability. We can offer stretch goals to aim for black core paper, a lidded box, and other nice (but more expensive) options.
Finally, we need to cover the costs to ship these decks to you!
But what if we succeed beyond our ambitious goals? Let's imagine what we might do with that...
BETTER PAPER AND BOX: Stunning black core paper and a snazzy tuck box for every deck. It's the upgrade we most want to see!
MORE WAYS TO HOLD YOU: Every deck will come with a satin-lined velvet bag, just adding to the elegance of the deck. Also, we will be able to offer more of the engraved wood boxes from the Dorothy's Delight level.
A shout-out to the wonderful folks whose time, effort, and inspiration have gotten The Shadow of Oz this far: Olympia Maxenchs, Allison Liles, Erik Cebrian, Chaunacey Dunklee, Maryanne Snell, Marisol Gold, Rhiannon Laakso, Kryslin Franks, and Darren Miguez. We absolutely could not have done it without you.
Risks and challenges
Having worked in and around the comic book industry for more than a decade, we understand the risk of slipped shipping dates and phantom projects. Our experience publishing comics means we know how to work closely with artists and keep them focused on the deadlines. All 18 of our professional artists are already under contract.
We have a quote from our printing company for the initial print run, and for a larger run should the campaign exceed expectations. We even arranged a back up printing company, should disaster strike at the first one.
We feel confident in our ability to deliver a quality storytelling package in a timely manner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
