At ike we've been designing measurement & modeling systems for some of the most demanding industrial customers the world over. Now we've made it our mission to bring that functionality to you. On your smartphone!
Spike (Smart Phone ike!) is a laser based device that attaches to your phone to ensure that you can rapidly & accurately measure & model an object up to 200 yards (600 feet) away just by taking a snapshot of it.
Spike integrates your smartphone's current technology with some specialized features of its own. It amalgamates a digital camera, a 3d compass, a laser range finder and GPS. It fits neatly into your pocket yet is robust enough to use every day.

Spike + SketchUp = 3D modeling utopia!
The 3D modeling WOW! factor is Spike’s ability to shoot a planar surface at an oblique angle and normalise that image when viewed straight on - it’s quite remarkable and a little freaky!
This function is hugely powerful, especially when combined with SketchUp, with which Spike integrates seamlessly right out of the box. We love SketchUp’s functionality, and we know that this will please all you budding 3D modelers.

This is desktop functionality that we’ll simplify and port to smartphones for launch, and as you can see the ike3D app rectifies and calibrates the images to drive the photomatch tool in SketchUp.

Spike will make it insanely straightforward - for the first time - to 3D print scale models of real world environments: buildings, landscapes, urban environments, you name it! No more laborious measuring to fuel your CAD; just use Spike to take an image, or a handful of images; gain all the scalable dimensions straight from those snapshots; model the environment and 3D print a scale model of it! Being developers ourselves we've early adoption and hacking in our blood. In line with our goal of building the Spike community to help us broaden Spike's capability, we’ve been inspired by seeing the innovative apps and hacks that communities have created for other measurement & modeling products.
So we’re providing with Spike a fully specified API for you to develop applications. You’ll be able to embed our specialist ikeTools into your application, or build your application over the data stream from the calibrated laser camera, to give your applications long range accuracy and depth perception.

Accurate measurement & modeling belongs on your smartphone!
Until now the options haven't been great. Maybe you’re using:
- traditional methods: like a tape measure, pen & paper maybe? It may be tried and tested but it’s also slow and prone to human error.
- expensive technology: like a laser range finder. They’re pricey, very limited in function, and present the same potential for human error in the recording of measurements.
- in-phone measurement apps: they seem great, but in reality the user needs to know one of the absolutes in the dimensions being measured. A bit of a constraint!
- indoor, up-close 3D scanning: there's some really cool stuff happening in this space. Check out Structure Sensor here on Kickstarter, for example. But that tech is all about near field, primarily indoor use. Spike's all about 6-600 foot range, primarily outdoor use.

Spike is completely unique in bridging the limitations in all of these options, by ensuring fast, precise, end-to-end and convenient geospatial measurement & modeling, straight from your smartphone.
How does Spike work?
Spike simply clips to your smartphone. If you can use a smartphone, you can use Spike! It contains patented laser, compass and bluetooth technology that integrates with the phone’s camera and GPS. Spike’s measurement functionality is all driven from the Spike app, within which you can select your chosen measurement criteria.
With the simple point & click system you can take a photo, overlay and record precise measurements & share it all, straight from your smartphone.
You can do this instantly on site or at a later date from your desktop. The intuitive software enables you to save and share images, measurements and even the GPS location of the target as easily as you would a standard digital photo.
We’ve developed a quick release mechanism to enable swift attachment and removal from any phone case/cover. By market launch you’ll be able to choose a case to fit the major smartphone models (we’ll contact you to determine your preference nearer the time). Meantime, we’ll be making available a CAD model for the quick release mechanism which you’ll be able to 3D print.

The evolution of Spike!
At ike we’ve been solving complex industrial measurement issues for a few years now.
ike tech has been used by the UN & US Army Corps of Engineers for disaster recovery in Haiti after the quake; New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina; for de-mining and emergency response; and we’ve been helping some of the largest electrical utilities companies ensure that your lights stay on!
But we really want to bring this fantastic functionality to the masses. So we’ve been inspired to miniaturize the capability for smartphone users everywhere, to save legions of people time and money, and maybe have a little fun along the way!

We have a vision for building a broader community to help us isolate and resolve measurement issues the world over. For us Kickstarter is about building that community, validating the market and accelerating development to deliver on our stretch goals sooner.
Our plan to ensure this happens includes opening up an API for Programmers so you can interface and customize our application to create your own measurement processes. So why not come on board and be part of the adventure?!

Spike BASIC: Spike unit + BASIC App access and 1 year of FREE software/feature upgrades. Spike BASIC will enable you to make GPS offset, height, distance and missing line measurements (ie the distance between two unconnected points), put that data into an image, and to share it. If you're currently using a laser range finder Spike BASIC'S capability will blow you away.
Spike PRO: Need a little more from your measurements? Like area, volume, polygon dimensions, 3D modeling & measurement from within images? Then Spike PRO is for you. This reward provides a Spike Unit + ADVANCED app and API access and 1 year of free software/feature upgrades - essentially everything we build for Spike for a whole year! If you want to develop extraordinary mobile AR experiences then this is the pledge for you!

Risks and challenges
We're innovators, sure. But we have a track record of successfully delivering product to market, which significantly reduces the risks of executing this project. Spike represents a miniaturization of our existing Ike tech - it's costly and tricky to achieve, but we do know the tech and we have created working prototypes.
Our team has produced and tested the prototypes and the Spike (android) application. We have been working through the production process to mitigate the risks of volume Spike production and believe that we are well placed to deliver according to the published plan.
All that said - we're project pragmatists! Unforeseen challenges can, and do, spring up. We are committed to keeping you informed of our progress in the months following the campaign. In the event that unexpected issues arise in the delivery schedule, we will do our utmost to minimize the impact on our supporters and dedicate ourselves to keeping it all on track! Spike will work with iOS and Android. We intend supporting the most popular makes and models at launch.
PRO includes additional measurement and modeling capabilities such as volume, polygon dimensions, and 3D modelling. PRO also provides API access for development etc.
The spike will make 3D models using a process like PhotoMatching in Trimble Sketchup to extract the features and build the volume.
We have made the initial systems, and found it to produce the basic cuboid type models with ease. In Sketchup you can improve the model to the detail desired, and spray the photo onto the model.
A basic model can be made in minutes, and any amount of time can be spent modelling the features to get more detail.
The laser range scales the images. We conservatively rate the laser to +/- 8 inches, which covers all reflectance targets and temperatures and range. In actuality it’s a lot better. For example in our Industrial solutions for measuring power poles, we tend to work to 2% of the size of the target.
The key benefit of making a spike3D model is that the model's image(s) are located and ordered, the model is correctly oriented & scaled and has photo textures on it.
It is not a Lidar point scanner and hence doesn’t produce a point cloud model of the target.
You can measure range in complete darkness. However you need enough light to see what you're pointing at!
If you can see it on your phone's camera, then you can measure it!
