About this project
Capoeira Ijexá, led by Mestre Urubu Malandro is organizing an event this August for dancers, capoeiristas, people interested in afro-brazilian culture and dances. FESTA DO FOLCLORE BRASILEIRO is a two day event of workshops with Maculele, Capoeira, Dança Guerreira, Samba, Dança do fogo, Puxada de Rede and more.
Many of these dances are not offered anywhere in the US and that's why we are bringing Mestres(Masters) of this beautiful and traditional dances to teach all their knowledge on this folkloric dances.
Capoeira Ijexá has been working really hard to fundraise money. Selling capoeira t-shirts, stickers, performing but it's not enough, we need more help. Bringing the Mestres from Brazil is not cheap, flight tickets, place to stay, food. and also providing water and food for the people participating in the event.
Capoeira Mestres and Dancers:
In the early 1960s, Suassuna became a prominent practitioner of capoeira in Bahia, receiving numerous invitations to present his capoeira show in other Brazilian states and abroad. In 1965 he moved to São Paulo with the intention of opening an academy and making a career in capoeira. In September, 1967, after some financial hardship, he met Mestre Brasilia in Ze Freita’s Academy, and together they founded Associacao de capoeira Cordão de Ouro.
As Mestre Suassuna, he has produced many capoeira shows, recorded four compact discs, and directed the Show Group of Cordão de Ouro. He has also contributed to the development of capoeira itself, and is the inventor of Miudinho, which is a musical rhythm, along with a distinct style in the martial art. Suassuna continues to influence the world of capoeira today, conducting workshops and seminars in several states in Brazil and around the world. He has graduated several capoeiristas individually and 5 distinct group generations known as "turma" (1970, 1975, 1980, 1988 and 2000.
A native of Salvador Bahia, Mestre Amen Santo is a recognized Mestre de Capoeira, master drummer, and is the Artistic Director of the Brasil Brasil Cultural Center. He began his artistic career under the guidance of Mestre Waldemar and Mestre Avila in Liberdade, Bahia, Brazil. His was mentored as a performer by Negão de Doni (percussion) and Emilia Biancardi (dance) and toured internationally as a member of Brazil’s historic premiere folk ensemble Viva Bahia.
In 1989, he founded the Brasil Brasil Cultural Center that serves as the home base for a professional touring ensemble (the Ballet Folclòrico do Brasil) and the internationally renown and longest standing capoeira school in Southern California, Capoeira Batuque. Santo helped bring capoeira to a worldwide audience through his performance and choreography in feature films including “Only the Strong” and “Kickboxer IV.” Santo has used dance and music as platform for promoting intercultural interchange, and valorization of Latin American diversity and the African Diaspora. He has also been honored in the Martial Arts Hall of Fame, and as a pioneer by the World Sokeship Council.
