I'm Johanna Chase, and I'm here to make my first album in six years.

Hello! I'm Johanna Chase, a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist living in Los Angeles. I've been touring since I was 14, and now work on indie records and go on tours, compose music for TV/Film and play for live theater.  My songs are about existential dread, love, growing up gay in a religious environment, and sitting in traffic.  Ya know, deep stuff.

My last record was produced by the incredible Roger Greenawalt (Ben Kweller, Nellie McKay, Rufus Wainwright): listen to my album #<3 on Spotify or Bandcamp!

“Johanna Chase is an amazing and energetic performer, a great songwriter, and has some serious pipes. She straddles and jumps genres, but always maintains a singer-songwriter pop perspective totally unique to herself.” –Robert DeLong, Glassnote Records

“Johanna is wildly original and quirky.  Her music is earnest, and moving.  She is also a true cheerleader for others in the LA music scene; someone who deserves any support or praise that comes her way.”  -Mackenzie Howe of the Wild Reeds, Dualtone Records

“Brilliant...I was blown away when I saw her perform.” -Storm Gardner, Grammy nominated songwriter

Over the years of touring, I have opened for Ryan Cassatta, Noah Gunderson, Aaron Sprinkle, Barcelona, David Bazan, The Salty Sweets, Over the Rhine, Elle King and others. I have been lucky to collaborate with Huit Kilos (Ricardo Lemvo), Joey Ryan (Milk Carton Kids), Charlotte Chaffey (The Go-Gos), Anna Worker (That Dog), and Z the Band (Nas).

I grew up playing music in church and recorded my first little single with my junior high band when I was 12.  After that, I began a habit-forming relationship with writing and recording music, including: tours starting at age 14 around the country and the world, 4 records in high school, 3 in college, and over the last 10 years, 3 studio records/E.P.'s, a handful of singles, a set of solo live studio recordings and a lot of cover songs on Youtube.  This all makes me feel old.  And proud.  But also...wow. Old.

It has been an entire SIX years since my last studio record. As I've reflected on what I've done in the past with my music, I see that I've always done things in a fast assembly line of creation and release. I want to make this new album in the way that more people might ACTUALLY hear my music.

Music like this song, GONE, the first single from my new album:

For the last few years, I've been writing songs and recording demos, but I didn't have all the pieces in place: the right group of musicians to come alongside me, and the proper time and money for pre-production and development of each song until it is fully realized.

In June of 2018 I hired a rhythm section for a live show and these two players helped me bring my songs to life in a way that I had needed them to for years. The stellar instincts of Marc Walloch (Awolnation, Juliette Lewis, Company of Thieves, Deadsara) and Brendan McCusker (Jenny Lewis, Ryan Adams, Hellogoodbye), mixed with my own musical developments, showed me that it was time.

With the rhythm section in place, I can now move forward to giving these songs the time they need. In order to make this record, I'm releasing myself from my normal tight deadlines and usual process. Instead, I am going to do all of the things necessary to support my artistic vision. I have a marketing plan and PR budget to help the songs see the light of day, I have a recording budget, and I have 20 songs already written and many unwritten.

In short, I am making a collection of studio recordings that will sound EXACTLY like ME in this moment. I am setting myself up to make the nicest, sultriest, most intentional and integrated body of original music that I have made thus far. Whoa. Intense.

Making a juicy recording of one of my original tunes costs money, but sharing that juicy tune also costs money.  Creating the visual content, strategizing releases and finding the right PR people who are paid to share that juicy recording is part of the reason I need to raise this amount of money.

I had a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2013 and made a cool record, BUT I didn't create any budget for marketing content, strategy or PR.  So despite my excitement in tattooing the album title to my chest (not a joke), the music just sat on the internet.  And since so much has changed, I am very aware of the fact that creating a PR budget is one of the smartest things I can do at this point.

And there's still another reason to bring this record to Kickstarter — it's an excuse to make a big hoopla!  So, yes, I need money to make this music , and I want you to enjoy the results of your contributions in the form of this amazing record.  BUT ALSO: the act of the campaign itself is like a big internet party that lasts for 30 days.  I've been preparing for the party for months.  I even hired a party consultant!

So — party with me and help me share my artistic content with the internet and all the humans who explore it!

 THE ALBUM AND ALBUM ART

I'm very excited to be printing this album on vinyl: the recordings are tight and the quality is going to be incredible. The album art will be designed by (Nick Jones) and will be a rad thing to keep around, even if you don't have a turntable yet. And of course, there are digital and CD options as well.

SHIRT DESIGN

There will be two shirt designs available: you can select your design and size after the project ends. We'll be printing sizes from Small to XL, one with a Johanna Chase design by Nick Jones, and one designed by John Fredrick that is based on my song to be released, “The Right Way”. (see below)

ZINE

Over the last year and a half, I've been opening my brain and dumping out stories and feelings from my past. These are all the stories that made me who I am. I’ve categorized them into three small books that are 10,000-12,000 words each. The titles of these small books are “Sister of Daniel”, ”Queer Daughater of the Church” and “Maker of My Own Secret Public Song Space”. I'm excited to share these for the first time, and they will make a good accompaniment to my music for you, to tell the whole story.

FACETIME SESSION

I am offering this reward to folks who would like to take a guitar, vocal, songwriting etc. lesson.  This reward can also be used to talk shop about being a DIY musician, a wandering spiritual queer or about how to tackle creative projects.

After the Kickstarter ends, I will email you and we’ll set up a time and intention for our time.

HOUSE CONCERTS

I love playing house Concerts!  They are the most authentic way for me to share my music with people.  As a house concert host, you invite your friends to come over and I play a full set of my tunes and chat with folks before and after.  It’s a great way to bring music to your community and to support artists like me.

If you choose this reward, after the Kickstarter ends, we will find a date that works for us both and you can start inviting your friends!

Where the money will go
Where the money will go

From the bottom of my big heart, THANK YOU! Thank you for contributing to art. To my art. To my music.  Thank you for being with me for so long or for just recently jumping on board my ship.

Everyone has something to share and I really appreciate you joining me in this way, so that maybe through the act of helping me share my art with others, the notion will be strengthened and we can all find ways to keep helping each other share and integrate our experiences.  May you enjoy your rewards and hopefully I’ll get the chance to see you IRL, once I take these recordings on the road.
