About

In the following description we are going to give you a little insight into the world of iGEM and synthetic biology.

iGEM means international genetically engineered machine and gives student teams from all over the world a chance to develop and present their individually found project at the final Giant Jamboree in Boston, MA. The main common goal of each Team is to support and expand the already existing open-source platform for exchanging BioBricks and sharing their ideas and experiences in the field of synthetic biology.

iGEM BOKU Vienna Team 2019

This year’s team presents the project called „Mycolactone Diagnostics“. Our team consists of under and over graduate students of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna and the University of Vienna. Together we form a multidisciplinary skilled team where each one contributes their best and can grow within the challenge. Our final goal is the participation in the iGEM Giant Jamboree in Boston, where all projects will be displaced and judged by a jury.

We are a non profit research team without any intention for profit. Our diagnostic method doesn’t involve spreading/sharing/sending GMOs.

Funding

To realize our project concept we rely on financial and materialistic support from our sponsors. Costs that accrue mainly arise from the application fee for the competition, the materials used in the laboratory as well as the travelling costs of the team members.

Our project "Mycolactone Diagnostics"

Our project is the development of a new methode to diagnose Buruli Ulcer, an infectious disease, which mainly affects people and especially children in Africa, Asia and Australia. The disease and diagnose are neglected and current methods, as reviewed with the WHO, are very expensive, time- consuming and lack selectivity. That’s why further research in this field is still needed and appreciated. Our method is based on the specific binding of Mycolactone, which causes Buruli Ulcer, to an aptamer. Thereby the transcription or translation of an Inducer is initiated which can be clearly and visually identified as positive or negative through a Genetic Toggle Switch. As a result we achieve a quick diagnose due to the presence of Mycolactone in an infected patient. This method doesn’t only reduce the cost and duration of the diagnosis but also leads to very high selectivity.

Recent activities

Two months into the competition, we have already been quite active:

· Draft of genetic switches finalized

· Project Inspiration published

· Start of laboratory work on cloning and transforming our reporter organism

· Presentations at potential sponsors

Upcoming activities

In the followings weeks we will intensively work at the laboratory. We also plan to do presentations in schools for, where we will talk about the idea of iGEM, the concept of our project Mycolactone Diagnostics and about synthetic biology in general. Connecting with other iGEM Teams around the world through collaborations is also our focus.

Risks and challenges

We are a non profit research team without any intention for profit. Our diagnostic method doesn’t involve spreading/sharing/sending GMOs.
Within the frame of the iGEM Competition, we would like to achieve a proof of concept and hope that our new specific diagnose idea will trigger further innovation in research around the world.
Hopefully, this little stone will help to strengthen the technological road called Synthetic Biology to improve the life and health of as many people as possible on our planet!
