See what you need to see!
IGAAKS are stainless steel or brass visors bringing a modern fashion update to ancient Inuit hunters' sun and snow visors. The durable one-piece body conceals your gaze direction, while the narrow slits limit glare and allow you to see true colors even in low light situations, unlike sunglasses. Ancient Inuit hunters used similar visors in the snow covered arctic.
Help Support IGAAKS First Large Production Run
Get your own IGAAKS while helping ramp up production to meet growing demand among DJs, music scene/rave goers, snow sport enthusiasts, beach lovers, cosplayers and gamers.
After dozens of IGAAKS prototypes, extensive testing with various materials in a variety of conditions and circumstances, and five years of selling and delivering individual and small runs of IGAAKS to men and women across the globe, consumer interest now indicates that it is time to make IGAAKS easily available everywhere. We’ve completed extensive research and development and locked in our large-scale production partners, and now we need your help.
Fulfilling the rewards of this campaign will provide us with the much-needed mass production experience to prepare us to meet the growing demands both nationally and internationally, while staying true to our commitment to keep material sourcing and manufacturing in North Carolina, forever. And, your feedback about IGAAKS (your funding reward!) will be invaluable in future product development.
We've intentionally set a modest funding goal that would support the tooling necessary for increased automation of our artisan design and an initial larger-scale run. However, we are very ready for backer participation to exceed these goals. Our stretch goal is to deliver more than 3000 IGAAKS to campaign backers which would finance a true large scale production run and position us for exponential future growth. Please help us by pledging and sharing this campaign.
Please help us by pledging and sharing this campaign. Help us bring IGAAKS to the world!
Once our project is successfully funded, backers will receive a survey to collect information including shipping addresses, styles, and your color preferences based on these options. Custom colors and options are also available.

Meet Paul Celmer, Designer
IGAAKS designer and science fiction writer Paul Celmer has been designing and crafting custom steel and brass visors for over five years. Other materials include oak, copper, and Damascus steel.
The poster image for the video above represents early IGAAKS prototypes worn at Burning Man 2011. Photo by Peter Armenia.
Paul Celmer, is a Durham based designer who enjoys looking at old things from a new angle. He gets inspiration from the 3,000 year old ancient Chinese strategy game known as Go, renowned for its simplicity yet deep labyrinthine beauty.
In 2009, while struggling to discern the color of his chips in the dim light of a late night poker game, he was struck by the idea that there had to be a better way to conceal his gaze from opponents than by simply resorting to the same old dark sunglasses he was wearing. Thus IGAAKS were born.
Building upon the clean, simple pre-industrial age design Inuit hunters used in the arctic for sun visors, Paul eliminated the leather straps with a one-piece spring-action design by using non- traditional materials such as stainless steel or brass. After wearing IGAAKS to numerous music festivals and local bars, he realized IGAAKS were good for more than just poker. So whether you face the glare from the midday sun or pulsing strobes of the dance floor, you can be confident you are fully ocularly armed with IGAAKS. In 2015, Paul joined Fred Westbrook, local Durham artist and President/CEO of Durham based media company C'Access Inc. to collaborate in creating a KickStarter campaign to introduce IGAAKS to a wider audience.
REWARDS: Two New IGAAKS Models - Ice Hunter and DJ
Featured rewards are made from a solid piece of high quality brass, stainless steel or copper. Pieces are cut on a laser jet, then bent, powder coated and finished by hand. Finishings include various colors of powder coating, oxide treatment on brass, or bare brushed metal clearcoated. IGAAKS are also available in a variety of colors, treatments and patterns, with a wide variety of custom features which can be requested.
Benefits and Fashion
IGAAKS limit glare whether you are partying in the sun or snow. Mask your gaze direction indoors at the club, poker game, or cafe while still being able to see what you need to see, and maintaining a fashion forward stance against cliche.
If you need a wider field of view, try the new triangular pinhole DJ model. You will be surprised at how much of the world you can see shielded in this ocular armor. IGAAKS are held in place by the light spring action of the bend in the metal.
A night out on the town, a dance party or rave event, costume party, playing poker - be anonymous, hide your gaze, and guard against the pulsating strobe lights . . . while looking good. At the beach or winter resort . . . look rad.

Risks and challenges
Staying artisan while transitioning parts of our production to a bit more automation is a challenge, but one we feel ready to conquer. Currently, most IGAAKS are laser cut by a very reliable local supplier, Triangle Metal Fabricators, and powder coating primarily by another local provider, Top Coat of Raleigh using colors from Cardinal. Following the metal cutting and before powder coating and after, the process has for the most part been done by hand (see the creator video for an example), including finishing the surfaces, bending the metal into the proper shape, etc. We are adding pre-finishing and bending automation cycles by our providers, with the intent to still provide the excellent artisan product this has become. So each IGAAKS model will continue to be hand crafted, and quality managed by Paul Celmer and his team, its just that more of the process will be automated. This presents a risk because it adds more complexity to the production process, though at the same time creates many efficiencies in the process and continues to provide quality control every step of the way.
IGAAKS founder, Paul Celmer, has operated as a one-man show for the past 5 years, but has committed to hand-selecting a top-quality team to take IGAAKS to the next level of success and profitability. Growing pains are to be expected, but by forming an intergenerational team of thinkers and doers, we are ensuring that our experience, energy and innovation will overcome obstacles and achieve excellence in this venture together.
IGAAKS is committed to spreading the message these are a fashion accessory only. IGAAKS are not intended to be worn while operating any sort of car, boat or other vehicle, any kind of machinery. IGAAKS are not made to, nor do they claim to - cure, treat, or prevent any illness or condition. In the packaging of the rewards, there will be clear indications of the proper use of IGAAKS as simply a fashion accessory.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
