Development Update - Ask IGA, Three New Characters

Lots to show off today, so let's get right to it! IGA sent us character bios and concept art for three new characters who will appear during Miriam's adventure. 

(But first—in case some of you would rather be surprised by the characters—here's that new Ask IGA you helped us put together in a previous update.)

Now for your development update:

Hi everyone, this is IGA.

We will be introducing new characters for this month's update - a woman who supports Miriam, a man related to the incident from 10 years ago, and a young villager. Maybe I can finally write up our story? That's about as much as we've gathered so far.

Rather than talking about it, right now I'm actively building the story. I wonder if I'll make it to the voice recording on time... Stay tuned!

But before that, I need to decide on voice actors!

By the way, we're currently working on parts of the game that were available as backer rewards, such as enemy and weapon designs. Some of the backers who backed at the pet and weapon design tiers have never responded to our e-mails, but it's possible those e-mails never got through. Dominique Baldwin (ドミニク・ボールドウィン) 
Age: 25 
An exorcist dispatched by the church, she supports Miriam as the shopkeeper. She speaks in a posh way, but she treats everyone kindly. While the church believes Miriam and Gebel to be demons, Dominique trusts them as human beings. In order to foil Gebel's ambitions, she asks her old friend Johannes to summon Miriam. 


Alfred (アルフレッド)
Age: 57 
Alfred is one of the alchemists responsible for the demon-summoning uproar ten years ago. He was Johannes's mentor, and a father figure to both Johannes and Miriam, but he's lost his former self as he heads to the castle seeking the Book of Logaeth in Gebel's possession. Quite and intelligent, Alfred's alchemic ability was unmatched even among his fellow alchemists.


Anne Knolles (アン・ノールズ)
Age: 12
A village girl whose parents were murdered. Anne was saved by Dominique and Miriam when demons attacked her village. When Dominique is out of town, Anne looks after the shop. She is a bright and cheerful girl.

Speedrun Challenge Results

Many thanks to XombieMike (of the Bloodstained Forums), who put together the demo speedrun challenge results for us! (While we're at it, thanks again to romscout, who set the pace.) Congratulations to AANXAAN, who will receive the Bloodstained art book with a final time of 2:36.

After the final game comes out and all of you have some time to dissect it, I'm sure this will seem impossibly slow. But for now: Great work!

Speaking of great demo work, we noticed this on the forums and have been meaning to point out: LeoLeWolferoux somehow got all the way to Level 99 in the demo! Here's a really interesting topic on the subject.

      Self-correction: Those shoes are just heeled shoes. I somehow mistook the gold part as the "buckles".

      The cloak and the tattered white part of Alfred's robe may look "generic", but the dark-gray vest certainly doesn't look typical. Also, everyone must've noticed by now that they're not showing a back-profile of Alfred. He's also got the rose-motif on the turquoise part on the front.
      It's entirely possible that they're hiding something on Alfred's back that may be spoilerific.

      As for Dominique; It's perfectly fine to have the opinion that her design is 'too weird', but realize that her clothing is actually based on women's fashion at the time. It's a bit stylized, obviously, but so are Miriam's and Zangetsu's outfits. Dominique's wearing a cross between a banyan (popular in the late 18th century) and a clergical gown. She's technically an exorcist, so why not? She's also wearing leggings, which have been worn by both men and women in Europe since at least the 13th century, and shoe-buckles (also popular in the 17th-18th centuries).
      It may look weird to people today, but it wasn't exactly unusual back in the time period that Bloodstained is set in.

      I have to agree with those who think that Dominque's design is too weird and the other's too generic. It could be improved by making something more fun and unexpected with those two generic designs and give the shopkeeper a normal skirt and shoes a human can walk in.

      @Michael Rogan: We don't actually know yet. It's a fascinating idea, regardless.

      I don't imagine that such a thing would mean you "can't" grind levels or farm items. It's a mere possibility that we have fun talking about.

      What does it mean "killing makes the curse worst"? does that mean I can't level and item grid in the game? I am referring to the comic above. Is there any truth to that?

      Well crap. I guess somehow I posted my comment reply to Simon in the general comments instead of here, my bad. So anyway:

      I'll add, they currently have an NDA with an unnamed entity regarding the prequel mini-game, so they can't say a whole lot about it right now. And...that's all we know about that.

      As far as updates and showing us a lot of stuff, I'd rather they didn't/keep it at the current level, because these games are about exploration and finding things. I want to explore and find the things on my own when I get it. These kind of updates giving me broad ideas of what to expect are for the best imo.

      also, do not forget that the initial kickstarter was designed as a market signal and that 90% of the (initial) funding comes from elsewhere

      I'm sorry, but you are gravely mistaken. This is a community funded project, and it has a good deal of community feedback. However, at no point is this even remotely close to a community developed game. you are not writing code, you are not writing the story and you are not designing or drawing.
      And I for one, want to get to the release date and enjoy a game that I will be playing for the first time.
      which is something that developers are not really given the chance as by then they will have had to stare at the full game for months and years at that point.

      @Simon: Why don't you try going on the Bloodstained Fan Forums website?

      Fangamer staff, and staff from the development team, actually regularly go on that site to check input from fans.

      Why can't he announce anything about the status of the prequel mini game? Why not let us in on the brainstorming process or the thoughts of the team so far? I find it annoying that IGA is treating this project as if he was the game designer at a big company. He isn't anymore. This is more of a community developed project where he has to consider the backers wishes and thoughts as well, that also means you guys should do more updates and let us in more on the progress and process. So far I'm pretty disappointed with how little involvement you're giving the backers.

      @Marc: I don't know. Dominique's design vaguely reminds me of Yoko, which I find pleasant. Alfred's got an enigmatic air to his design (especially the unknown purpose of the rose-motif on his "tie"), and Anne's design resembles both Maria and Sonia Belmont.

      In my humble opinion, Alfred's the most interesting character of the three. He's one of the alchemists responsible for the mass demon-summoning, but was a father figure to two of the main characters.
      I only wonder what his true role in this story will be.

      A bit disapointed by Dominique's design. She looks just awfull while the two others are rather generic (old male schollar with a worn cape and little girl with a pouch bag).
      Why not swap their genders for a change. That would be interesting.

      Dominique's outfit is terrible! Who would wear something like that? A half corset half robe over a skintight bodysuit? What? Why cant she wear something someone would actually wear? Like a dress, a real robe or maybe some pants! What even is that?!

      I don't use facebook or twitter, but I'd like to ask this question - SoTN came out when I was very young, and so I was kinda.. dumb. I went and killed richter my first play through and thought I'd beaten the game. Not long after I played through again more thoroughly and found the alternate castle. Do you plan to implement a large story with endings similar to SoTN (bad, good, better, best)? I was really excited finding that out.

      Love the new characters! Sexy nun design is great! Old man seems like he could end up betraying the Miriam to get that book back. Anne isn't living up to her happy description.

      Can't wait to meet them in game!

      I may be in the minority here, but I've got to say that I hate pandering "fanservice" designs like Dominique's.

      On the other hand, maybe there's a perfectly good explanation for her look, like she does a little exotic dancing on the side to gather alms for the poor, or perhaps she breathes through her thigh-skin.

      Getting to level 99 while on the Minerva should automatically lock the rest of the game into hard mode.

      I imagine this has been mentioned before but, just in case, I think you made a slight typo "Quite and intelligent, Alfred's alchemic ability was unmatched even among his fellow alchemists." I assume that should be 'Quiet and intelligent'?

      On another note, as with every single update you publish, I'm LOVING what i'm seeing here. Huge fan of the anime style and, well, let's just say Dominique can exorcise me any day... know what I'm saying? :3

      Third place in the speedrun challenge, neat! AANXAAN got a pretty flawless run which is why I didn't pursue (Bravo, and grats!), also the run I got was made on brother's computer which is much better than my own, and when I came home to my computer I couldn't for the life of me execute fast jumpslashes anymore xD. The only thing I really hope will be fixed is the glitched doubleattack you execute by jumping and slashing at the same time several times in succession. Other than that this game will be MARVELOUS and fun to speedrun since the base abilities even available now enables much and many small tricks of movement that saves time in the long run. Speedrunners REPRESENT!

      My God, that Dominique, I wish she'd be playable. Oh man, I can't wait to see her in game. Also fanarts and cosplays. I recall Miriam also had a picture with glasses on in one of the official picture. Good job, IGA! As a guy with megane fetish, I salute you!
