Development Update - Bloodstained for Nintendo Switch

We interrupt your regularly scheduled update for some unscheduled breaking news: Bloodstained is coming to the Nintendo Switch.

The team was hoping to announce the release to backers once the Switch version was further underway, but because word got out early IGA wanted to talk about it here first. Here’s IGA:

Hello, this is IGA.

Thank you for always supporting us. I would like to give a message to the backers who pledged for the Wii U version of Bloodstained.

During our Kickstarter campaign, the Wii U was at the height of its popularity, but the situation has drastically changed after the release of Nintendo Switch.

This change made it difficult to receive the necessary support from the hardware maker, which has led us to drop the Wii U development and shift the development to Nintendo Switch.

We are very sorry that it has come to this after all your support, but we hope you will understand. We would like to respond by preparing options for our backers, such as moving your pledge to another version or requesting a refund if you don’t want any other version.

We hope you will continue to support us.

How this will work for Kickstarter and slacker backers: The Switch version is now available as an option in the backer survey for anyone who has a physical or digital version of Bloodstained coming, replacing the Wii U version. (Just use the same link you were sent to fill out your survey initially; if you have any problems with your survey, or don’t have your link any more, we can help: e-mail orders@fangamer.com.)

If you selected the Wii U version in your backer survey and you want the Switch version, you’re all set! The Switch version has replaced the Wii U version in the survey, so no further action is necessary on your part.

If you selected the Wii U version and you want to move to a PC, PS4, Xbox One, or Vita version, you can go to your backer survey and make the change now. (Click the "Change Your Survey Answers" link.)

If you selected the Wii U version and don't want any of the Switch, PC, PS4, Xbox One, or Vita versions, you're eligible for a cancellation and refund if you meet all the following criteria:

  • You filled out your backer survey and selected the Wii U version prior to this update.
  • You backed at an unlimited tier ($28 to $500)
  • You are able to receive a refund via PayPal
  • You submit your refund request before the April 20, 2017 deadline.

If you're eligible for a refund and backed at a tier that included two copies of the game, including the Wii U version, we can also help you adjust your tier to its single-copy equivalent. Refund requests will be processed via PayPal at a later date.

All requests should be e-mailed to orders@fangamer.com with the subject “Bloodstained Wii U refund.” (Please include the e-mail address associated with your PayPal account.)

Your regularly scheduled update is coming very soon! IGA has prepared introductions for three of the characters Miriam will meet as Bloodstained gets underway…

:-/ I chose to back this project in the hopes that I'd get to play it on a system I have, but if I hadn't given this project as much as I did, I would have a Switch right now. I am NOT happy about this.

If I ordered this for the PS4 can I still get it for the Switch instead? I'm loving that system and would love to add this to my library for it.

Hi, I owned an xbox one when the kickstarter happened but breath of the wild made me want to buy switch now i love the handheld design, is it possible to change to the switch if you chose something other than wii u?

    4. ScaniX - Silent / Friendly / Axe owner on April 2

Please send out new mails with that info and the link to change the version. There is no way people still have such an old link that had just a single purpose.

    5. Corey on April 1

Will any version of the game offer the ability to annotate the map? That's why I chose the Wii U version (it's a function I think the Castlevania games should have had long ago). If the Switch version won't offer this, then I'd like to change. Thanks for your advice!

In retrospect I think this cancellation was probably a long time coming when they first announced the switch. Given where support for the Gamecube dropped off immediately when the Wii was announced and so on. A nice touch adding refunds but I would never consider it for the world. Keep up the good work making what promises to be one the best gameplay experiences I'll have experienced yet

    7. Michael Abi Daoud on March 30

Daniel - How was the team, who started this project just shy of 2 years now could of possibly known that the Wii U would be a retired platform, so early into its lifespan? Have you also read the letter as well?

"This change made it difficult to receive the necessary support from the hardware maker, which has led us to drop the Wii U development and shift the development to Nintendo Switch"

They physically cannot continue with the platform because Nintendo isn't going to be supporting it much longer. How does it make sense to release a game on a system that isn't being developed for anymore?

Calling this a "bait and 'switch" clearly means you actually didn't read the letter.

But no worries. Hope you get to enjoy the game after the fact.

I opted for PS4 but after hearing that the Switch is getting the love for it, I changed my backer reward. Nostalgia-Vania!!

Bit disgusted by the cancellation of the Wii U version to be honest. I understand it is not Nintendo's main platform at the moment, but be a man of your word and follow up on your promise.

I backed this so I could utilize the gamepad as a map and get a truly unique experience, and now I cannot. This is bait and switch (pun intended) - refunds are great, but I am more disappointed on how this was handled. No surveys were sent to Wii U backers on their opinion, and the decision was just made

Will certainly be seeking a refund for this, and will be buying a yard copy at some point

    9. Michael Stanley Clark on March 28

As long as this doesn't delay the PC digital release, I could care less about Nintendo's latest gimmick.

Although I think it's pretty disrespectful to the WiiU backers to completely drop the WiiU version and either make them get a refund, change their preferred version or force them buy a new system.

    10. Cajin J on March 28

Knew this was coming, but it's for the best.

      RIP Wii U.

Changed to the PlayStation 4 version since the Wii U version was canceled, and that's fine because I already use the PS4 and XBO for Unreal Engine 4 titles. Though sad to see, perhaps this cancelation will have been for the better in hindsight.

Though my original pre-order was for the Nintendo Wii U, I had no desire to change my order to the Nintendo Switch version.

      Here's why:

Back when this game was first announced, the Switch (PlayStation Pro or Scorpio, for that matter) wasn't even in the picture; the game was for PS4, XBO, PC, and later, Wii U. That being said, there's absolutely no reason to buy a next-gen machine (the Switch) to play a game for current-gen machines.

Despite the myriad of emotions this all has elicited, I still love your work, Iga and crew.

      Always have, and always will!

As a long-time Castlevania fan, I look forward to experiencing your new work and adding it to my collection of your previous works!

I understand why this had to be done business-wise, and Yooka-Laylee already rained on the Wii U parade, so I knew this was coming. With that in mind, the blow is softened. However, I am still somewhat disappointed, as Breath of the Wild has shown the Wii U is still viable from a purely "gameplay experience" perspective, and I for one enjoyed the ability to play Mighty No.9 on Wii U, as well. Yooka-Laylee and Bloodstained would have given a lot of extra life to the console for Wii U owners. But again, business is business, and I wish luck and success to all! Just make the best game possible! I think the biggest loss might end up being the unique touch-screen/second-screen functionality that the Wii U version would have reportedly had. I assume the Switch version will have a physical option here, unlike the Yooka-Laylee situation, where it was only offered digitally after the switch to Switch. (I think that was merely a timing issue there.)

    16. Brent Taylor on March 24

The "survey has not been sent" thing you see doesn't mean anything, these surveys were sent to you by orders@fangamer.com instead of Kickstarter and it appears as this:

From: Fangamer Mailroom (same address above)
Subject: ACTION REQUIRED: Survey For Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

Most were sent out mid-September, so check around then. I can't imagine you would have deleted it. If you have, just e-mail that address again asking for a new link. If you have the link, that is where you can make any and all changes to your platform choices.

If you already picked Wii U, like the update says, you've already been changed to the Switch version. Everything else is in the update.

    17. Michelle A. Truax on March 24

Just tell me how I can add on a Physical copy for the Switch. Having both a Vita and Switch version will totally make my collection!

To the people that oddly enough want to go from a quite powerful console to a lesser powerful one, just go on your survey link and manage the pledge.

I don't blame them. They couldn't have known Nintendo would drop the console in the trash can so quickly. It makes no financial sense to release the game for a dead console.

    23. Josef Blom on March 22

Considering how the Wii U version of Mighty No. 9 turned out compared to the others, this is probably for the best.

I'm surprised and a little impressed to see how many people are making the move from a non-Nintendo console to the Switch! Guess it's really left an impression. Lord knows I love mine, but I'm also a raging fanboy so of course I would.

I'm still a bit disappointed that the Wii U version is being dropped, but it was also pretty easy to see this coming. Doubly so since Yooka Laylee did the same. At least it seems like this one will be releasing the Switch version at the same time as the others, so it's not AS harsh- and they've been clear/up front about the refund policy. Good on the team for that.

      @Matt Ottozzinnai
You can change your version for the one you want on fangamer backer page for free.

    32. Florian Emmerich on March 22

A bit sad, but at least you give us a refund, so I'm not complaining.

    33. Matt Ottozzinnai on March 22

Could we switch from PC to Switch for an additional fee?! So many Kickstarter games are doing this! It was unfair to make us pick between PC and consoles at that point! The Switch being portable totally changes my mind, this is another perfect Switch game that I'll have to buy twice to enjoy how I really want to.

Yooka Laylee has completely ignored my inquiry, please don't do the same!

    34. Edgar Salinas Merlos on March 22

How can I switch ( no pun intended) from ps4 to Switch, I pre-ordered the collector's box so I am not sure if the game will have this option for the Switch

    35. Andrew Cole on March 22

Sweet, I changed up from PS4 to Switch. I'm loving this crazy awesome Nintendo creation. Bloodstained will be a great addition to my Switch Library.

    36. Francisco Santiago on March 22

I meant please don't make us choose beforehand. Sorry about that train wreck of a post. I hate auto-correct.

    37. Francisco Santiago on March 22

I pledged for the physical PS4 version but I'm interested in the Nintendo Switch version now
I need more details on both versions, though (performance, release dates, etc.). Please done like the Yooka-Laylee people and force us to lock down our choice before we know the details

    38. Jason Capp on March 22

Like many others, I have also switched from PS4 to Switch. Nothing against a PS4 version, but being able to play this beautiful game seamlessly from TV to portable is a MUST. I am so pumped for this! Thank you, Iga-san! I appreciate it!

    39. Marco Cordeiro on March 22

I had an order for the PS4 version, I have now changed to the Switch, much more comfortable! :)

    40. SweetTaLe on March 22

I actually switched from the PS4 version to the Switch. I was never gonna get the WiiU version, but playing this game on my Switch sounds really fun and comfortable. Plus I want more games on that system.

    41. Sam Lee on March 22

WAAATDESUKA?!??! That's it, I'm crying like an anime fan on prom night. Cept these are tears of joy!

just go to the survey and select another platform

    43. Arron PJ on March 22

Can I change from PS Vista to Switch ?

    44. Anonymous on March 22

I was actually wondering how you were going to deal with this issue, I can't speak for others who own a Wii U but it was a good call development wise, I'll still get mine on Steam though

    45. Mark on March 22

I am very happy for the Switch version. It was a good decision!

    46. Randal Dueno on March 21

Now that you have a Nintendo switch version and knowing that this game has been in development for the ps4, xbox1 and the vita, you have no excuse to make it unplayable on the ps tv, after all, the xbox1 has no touch capabilities and having it playable on the ps tv makes the vita version a portable /console version much like the switch version is

    47. Missing avatar

Devin R. Lowe on March 21

@Justin Holmes: Which was May of 2 years ago. The Wii U wasn't doing so well even then, with a relatively weak lineup of games.

I own one, and don't have too many games for it (though the ones I do have are pretty good), but even I realize that the Wii U version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the system's last hurrah.

@Randal Dueno: Unless there's some new PSP system in the works (which I highly doubt), I don't think it's likely at all that the Vita version would be dropped.

    48. Randal Dueno on March 21

You better not drop the ps vita version because the vita is no longer "at the peak of its popularity" and you better make sure it is ps tv compatible, that is my only way to play vita games or this game for that matter seeing as I don't have a ps4, xbox 1, switch nor do I want to buy them and I'm not a pc gamer and I want to play this game on my ps tv and my big screen TV. You know masking vita games compatible with the PS TV is so simple all indi developers with less money than this project are making their games vita and ps tv compatible. Lastly, if you dare to cancel the vita version for such a stupid excuse, I'm going to want my money back and I hope others do the same

Im not in the Wii U version bandwagon, but this is a poor move even if refunds are given. I know Kickstarters sometimes fail and this and that, but it's like a broken promise. Adding another platform? GOOD! Way less good if that means dropping another one. The question is if now in the long development cycle this could mean that other platforms can be gutted out because of predicted bad sales. I worry specially for the VITA version.
