September Update: Music with Michiru-san

We've got a nice change of pace for this month's update: I get to throw it to IGA, and then IGA gets to throw it to somebody else. This week Michiru Yamane is here to show off some new music and tell us a little about the process behind each new track.

But first, IGA:

For today's update, we are sharing four songs from the game, composed by none other than Michiru Yamane. These tracks include the Kickstarter campaign soundtrack, the music from the E3 demo, and two new songs. None of them is much longer than a minute-and-a-half, but each one will immediately make you think: "Ah... this is definitely Michiru-san's work."

Please note that we have a tentative plan for when each track will be played, but they may shift around after the stage tracks are all completed.

I composed this track last May to provide a soundtrack for the Kickstarter campaign. The promotional video of Igarashi-san saying, "But I know they are wrong!" and throwing the wine glass left a strong impression on me.

VOYAGE OF PROMISEThis is the music for the stage aboard the Galleon. For this track I wanted to evoke the feeling of an adventure's beginning.

The reference material I received showed a very beautiful place, and this melody came to me immediately. The heavenly pipe organ and soprano vocal make this one of my favorite tracks.

The Entrance was a very beautiful place as well, but I was inspired by the fountain, the chandelier, and all the sparkly decoration to compose a track that sympathizes with Miriam's sad and cruel fate.

Thanks to Yamane-san for sharing some of her work with us! We're looking forward to hearing more.

1. I realized as I was putting this update together that we've managed, by being a few days late at a time, to skip an update entirely—looking back at our archives I realized this was originally the August update. My apologies; we'll find a way to make it up later on.

2. IGA was also at Pixelatl, but he might have been harder to spot. Mana passes along this photo of his disguise.

Great stuff, thank you for sharing!

When I was younger I used to play some very hard (even though I failed all the time) or not so cool games just because of their great music. I believe music is a key factor in video games. I love the songs so far and I'm pretty sure the OSTs will be amazing!

Love the music. I can't wait to hear more.

These are fantastic and exactly what I was hoping for when I backed this project! Can't wait to see the scenes these are set to. Keep up the good work!

      @ C-4567
As long as it is the right kind of cheap, I won't object ;-) . Listening to the tracks with good studio mixing headphones really brings out the beauty of the arrangement. I like that the mixes have a natural feel to them. Very warm and melodies touching the soul.

Michiru Yamane, your music is amazing, I'm really glad you've returned here. My favorite soundtrack from you is the Prologue in SotN that was the first thing that hooked me onto SOTN, as soon as I heard it, I was enthralled in the game, immediately. These songs are great

    7. Missing avatar

      Dillan Carroll on

I feel really dumb for not expecting a SotN level soundtrack, this is fantastic work. Kind of reminds me how the worst part of that game was when the save rooms cut the soundtrack haha.

    8. John C on

EXACTLY what I was hoping for when I learned that Michiru Yamane would be doing the music!! So brilliant!!

Full orchestration would be lovely for sure, but even in its synthy incarnation, it's still damn lovely. <3

    9. C-4567 on

Well to be fair, we Castlevania fans have been loving those "cheap synth violins" for quite some time now.
The entire OST could be on pan-flute and I still wouldn't care; Michiru Yamane's composing the thing :D

      @ Duncan A. Doherty

Just for added clarity, the update contained this statement:

"(...) Hitting the orchestra stretch goal allows them to use live instrumentation where it makes sense, but some tracks just make more sense with electronic arrangements. Songs like Yamada's "Cursed Orphan", which already includes violin and electric guitar parts, will be performed by a smaller, rock-oriented ensemble. (...)"

So yes, no full orchestration but where it makes sense. I just don't want to hear cheap synth violins.. .

    11. Brieuc Hesnault on

      Ohh ! This is definitly Michiru-san's work ! :D
Holy Wisdom is marvelous and I'm really hanging my head to Luxurious Overture already ! Amazing work !

    12. Dennis van Mazijk on

Wow, really beautiful compositions! Can't wait to listen to the whole soundtrack :D

    13. ShinKagato on

Absolutely stunning compositions which whilst being completely new fill me with a sense of nostalgia for Iga's past games, fantastic work from the legend that is Yamane-san. I am so excited for this game, more so than anything else coming from bigger studios, there are so few games being made now that can truely capture the imagination the way this one already has.

    14. Duncan A. Doherty

The 3,750,000 stretch goal was for select orchestrated tracks, NOT the full soundtrack (see update #19). Stop spreading false information, lest it create further false expectations. Let's not forget some backers still though this was going to be a sprite-based game right up until they showed us the first screenshots, despite that not being the case from the beginning.

Anyway, the tracks sound great, and very much in the vein of SOTN, so I am excited to see what else Ms. Yamane has in store for us.

      Claudio Wieland on

I have to second Arct1c0n. The $3,750,000 goal was an orchestrated soundtrack. So I imagine the tracks will be the basis for a hopefully full orchestration PLUS excellent mastering?
The music is very classy and not so over-engineered as is so much contemporary game music. I get goosebumps in quite some parts of the tracks, so that's a great sign!

    16. O.F. on

Yup, that sounds like some good old Castlevania music.
      Nice !

    17. Gonzalo M.B. on

Realmente estoy pulsando a que llegue el 2018 jeje
Sigan con el gran trabajo que están haciendo, todos esperamos una obra de antología =D

    18. Tobias Kneißl on

It actually sounds like they found a CD full of unused Castlevania music. It's amazing!

    19. Eltanin on

I'm baffled by the quality of each of these songs, they are amazing!

It's as good as I was expecting and then more. Luxurious Overture has me in tears, it sounds absolutely beautiful, I LOVE it!

Keep up the great work Yamane san and team.

    20. BloodFrost on

Don't we get a full orchestra for game cause this sounds REALLY synthesized

    21. Randy Snow on

Even if this doesn't get a orchestrated version it sounds wonderful. Its retro and still conveys the feeling and spirit of the Castlevania games.

I can close my eyes, and feel I am back in 199X playing a game on the Saturn or PS1.

    22. Rayne Sievers on

Oh man, it begins. I'm getting flashbacks of Castlevania games!!! I am truly amazed at these tracks and the feelings they invoke once heard. I'm so pumped for this game.

    23.   on

Instant classics. Truly. Orchestrated versions would be awful and have no personality.

    24. Josef Blom on

Noticing a few people criticizing the production quality of these tracks. I was going to join them, but then I was reminded that one of the stretch goals ($3,750,000) was for orchestrated music. I'm fairly certain these are just mock-ups to show off the compositions before the live instruments are actually recorded, something I'm very excited to hear.

    25. Neohybrid_kai on

Holy Wisdom made me speechless in awe, but its Luxurious Overture that succeed in making me shedding tears, I kid you not, it's like I'm having a flashback of all the Castlevanias I've played since my childhood until now.

A bit suggestion though, I agree with Nicholas, Luxurious Overture is perfect but the piano in Voyage of Promise feels like 'not blending in' enough. Though in Holy Wisdom, the "not blending in" soprano only makes it better. It feels airy and wandering.

As for me, I'm looking forward for some jazz-pipe organ fusion like Crystal Teardrops.

    26. Mikko Rahkola on

Nicely done the new music sounds excellent for the upcoming game.

      Paul D'Elia on

Voyage of Promise sounds like it came right out of Order of Ecclesia... which I'm fine with.

      Nicolas on

I have to agree with @Nicholas Perry, the composition is awesome as expected, but the production quality is a tiny bit disappointing, I feel the instruments could sound better (also the vocal in Holy Wisdom sound like it's saturated or something, it's not very "clean").

Also, I'm hoping for some more jazzy tunes in the same vein as Wandering Ghost.

    29. Kevin Kelpikowski on

Omg thank You so much for Showing us the First Songs - its a bittersweet throwback to better times and a Nod to the past which gives me teary Eyes. So looking forward to the Release And of course to this Godly OST which will be signed by yamane-sama

    30. Fire-Dragon-DoL on

@Nicholas Perry I somewhat agree with you, but I assumed they are incomplete because the endings? All Michiru Yamane songs I remember have a great way to "end" (can't describe it properly, sorry), while these fade out, so I assume they are incomplete. That being said I honestly like a lot what I see here

    31. Fire-Dragon-DoL on

(obviously the last one is a joke, hopefully no one misinterpret that!)

    32. Fire-Dragon-DoL on

So, where is the addon to buy the soundtrack? I need to throw some money at you

    33. Steve McIlroy on

Awesome music as always. I love her work. Can't wait to hear all the new songs! I often work on all of my graphic design stuff while listening to her music. :D

    34. Fire-Dragon-DoL on

OHHHH the last one gave me, finally, that VIBE, symphony of the night!!!

These are terrific. I have yet to be disappointed by an update about this game and at the rate things are going, I don't think I will be. Thanks for posting this!

      BGamer & cdawgg on

Wow these tracks are impressive! As a musician and an overall music nerd, I always have a tendency to pay close attention to the OST. I'm really excited for this. I want to hear more!

      Nicholas Perry on

I hope the production on the music here isn't final. The compositions are great, the production values are not quite as good. Suffers some of the same issues the later CV games had, middling production values in the recordings/performances/sequencing.

Hopefully there is a final round of polish before release.

    39. Rong Ma on

Keep em coming please. I'd like to hear more. :D

I must add this soundtrack to my collection. I'm listening to all the old Castlevania soundtracks as we speak. I'm currently up to Akomajo Dracula:The Stolen Seal(Order of Ecclesia). 2018 suddenly feels so very far away...

    41. Levyathyn on

As always, Michiru Yamane's music is inspired and perfectly delivered. Reall wish I'd have been able to spring for the $300 autograph tier, but alas. I'll make do with the OST. ^_^

    42. Missing avatar

      Devin R. Lowe on

      That's a funny disguise for IGA! :D

I can't believe the amazing quality of the new music tracks so far... but then again, this is Michiru Yamane we're talking about. She's a musical genius, if you ask me!

With updates like these I can handle delays all the way up to 2030 XD

    46. giga-ganon on

Also, i forgot, Orchestral soundtrack was one of the stretchgoal... will these music be remade for the final game?

    47. giga-ganon on

So the awesome music that was in the demo data has finally a title : Luxurious overture! Great! In the end it's only one new music but that still good news! Can't wait to hear more
