IF I EAT ROCKS WILL I LAST FOREVER
Ella West and Sophie Glover are eating rocks again!
WHO ARE WE ?
As a collaborative pair we make work investigating consumption, legacy and time through the motif of rocks.
Sophie works as a drawer and painter exploring bodies, rocks & meat and Ella is currently undertaking a MA in Fine Art Media at the Slade making breathing rocks, ceramic sculptures and prints that investigate rocks as an account of time; directing attention to the rock as a mother figure and a metaphor for home. In 2015 we undertook a month long residency on the Baltic island of Kökar culminating in a solo show in London. It was called Solidity • Tell Me How You (Stand 30 Days of Sediment). We intend to continue this body of work, specifically our piece in which we ate rocks we had made.
WHAT IS THE PROJECT?
We have been invited on the London Summer Intensive residency led by the Slade School of Art & Camden Arts Center. Our project, If I Eat Rocks Will I Last Forever, will investigate the relationship between humanity’s need to consume with humanity’s desire to leave a legacy. We will be individually working on kinetic sculptures, prints and paintings in response to these ideas. Then, as a pair we will spend the majority of residency preparing for a performance in which we eat rocks. We intend to play with artifice and symbolism through sculpting food to look like rocks and we will use our time on the residency to explore casting processes, materials and textural edible ingredients that best reflect our theoretical investigation into consumption, sustenance and legacy.
We need your help to raise money for the materials that we need to realise this body of work!
HOW WILL WE SPEND THE MONEY?
We are hoping to fund the materials costs of our residency in three parts.
- Edible & inedible rock sculptures, £200
- Kinetic Sculptures, prints & paintings, £150
- The performance, £100
The residency starts on the 29th July and we’re really excited to get into the studio. Once we have researched our ideas thoroughly during the first few days we will move on to the materials research stage in which we will play around with casting techniques and food substances to execute both edible and inedible rocks. At this stage we will use the first part of our Kickstarter fund.
The materials we buy will be dictated by our research so our budget is an estimate but to whet your appetite we’re imagining ... gelatines, butters, oils, coloured spices and lurid synthetic dyes, ethanols, chocolates, dried pulses, waxes, latex, plaster, silicon, resin, glass, clay, glazes, things that melt at different temperatures and things that fizz in different situations, things that harden on contact and things that shatter when hit, things that drip slowly and things that explode!
The second part of our Kickstarter fund will be used during the middle part of our project when we digress into our personal work. Ella will be making kinetic sculptures and prints and Sophie will be making paintings. For these we envisage needing brushes, oil paints, turps, liquin, board, silicon, latex, electric blowers, paper, wax, paper and inks. We have budgeted very modestly as we will also be using our own materials.
The final part of our Kickstarter fund will be used at the end of the project during the performance. We will use it for the set; glass cylinders, table, chairs and breakage props as well as to hire AV equipment that we will use to record our performance and edit it into a film to be projected in the final show!
A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT OUR IDEAS….
With a growing awareness of our position in the Anthropocene era, Sophie Glover and I are interested in opening up dialogues about the time of human consumption that uses rocks and minerals to sustain itself. We are curious to explore our current dependency on these resources for existence and its link to how humanity might strive to leave it mark - or ‘exist’- in the future. In particular, we are interested in researching the countless ways in which humanity has attempted to inscribe itself into stone throughout history.
We wanted to offer rewards that we are excited by ourselves. So there is a range, from prints that we usually sell online but now at a fraction of the price to an exciting set of hand made Ceramic Rock Cups that we have just developed in the workshop.
Our £3 reward is an 'Ill Be Your Rock' card, designed by Sophie
Our £7 reward is a Basalt Columns Fine Art Giclee Print by Sophie
Our £13 reward is a ceramic Speckled Rock Cup handmade by Ella
Our £18 reward is a hand made ceramic cup with a hand drawing of a rock on made my Ella & Sophie, here is our design..
Our £20 reward is 3 colour Rock Risograph print of a drawing of a rock by Sophie, our £50 reward is a cast inedible rock sculpture that Sophie & Ella will make during the residency and our £100 reward is a miniature painting of a rock made in Kokar by Sophie on our last residency
PLEASE NOTE : If you would like to pick up your reward from Sophie's studio in London she will refund your postage costs in person
We will be having a Work in Progress show at the Camden Arts Centre mid August and a final show at the Slade studios at the end of the month so do send us a message if you would like details to come along and see us eat some rocks!
Risks and challenges
Our main risks during this project are failed experiments in the rock making workshop. We hope to overcome this through repeated experimentation and a sense of adaptability!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
