About

UPDATE!

We have wonderful news! A veteran producer, Josh Cross, has expressed interest in collaborating with our crew to produce If. I Love you. Under his direction, we are refining our business and distribution plans in preparation for full financing of the film. He has successfully used Kickstarter to launch films and upon his advice, my team and I are temporarily canceling our current campaign. We will re-launch within a few weeks with a stronger, revitalized approach.

We have received enormous positive feedback from professional artists and viewers nationwide and have a growing fan base and network. Talented artists are being added to our crew.

We are sincerely grateful for your support and ask that you will stay on our team, and continue to believe in our vision. Exciting things are happening behind the scenes with If. I Love You because of the attention gained from our first campaign. Stay tuned. We will contact you before re-launch to enable us to make a big splash in the first 24 hrs. Thank you for supporting If. I Love You, the arts, and indie film! Without you it wouldn’t be possible. Please keep up to date with the production by liking our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/If-I-Love-You/1514310125447164

With gratitude, Maria Allred, Director

Film Description

From time immemorial, love has been the subject of poets, artists, psychologists, philosophers, and now neuroscientists. It is a perpetual query as one navigates many confounding factors that make up the experience of “love,” from evolutionary biological drives to the exalted notions of unconditional love, and all the nitty gritty, everyday details in between.

If. I Love You is an experimental fiction feature film produced in Portland, Oregon.  The film illustrates love from an investigative, at times deconstructionist, perspective.  It is driven by a fundamental outlook that romantic relationship reflects the quality of one's relationship with oneself.

The format of the film is a cohesive, interwoven collection of short films. The shorts will weave fluidly together, each one tackling a vital aspect of relationship.  Narrative tension and questions raised in one short are addressed and/or resolved in subsequent shorts.  The characters will intermix throughout the collection of shorts, providing a sense of continuity and community.  This project will also feature the traits and locations of Portland—both iconic and obscure.

Using fresh and unexpected vehicles for delivery (like ice-cream trucks) and obvious ones (like texting), the film considers multiple phases and themes of love including chemical combustion, rituals, love and war, triangles, apathy, stuckness, covert and overt communication, the work of love, catharsis, and dissolution.

Some of the short pieces that comprise the film showcase a unique method of cinematic direction, which director Maria Allred has been developing: process oriented directing.  This method is exciting in that it is one resolution to long held debates in cinematic philosophy and criticism about the fundamental factors necessary within and between the participants creating the film to facilitate the production of a vital, spontaneous, true-to-life, unrehearsed quality in great films.  Some of these debates include directorial method, acting method, improvisation vs. scripted theatrical realism, and audience responsiveness.

Without waxing too much into the esoteric, process oriented directing takes advantage of the ideas of psychologist, Carl Jung, and his evocative discovery that within each of us resides the imprints to the collective store of fundamental or "archetypal" human emotional experiences throughout time.  Allred draws upon her many years of personal experience in Jungian based interpersonal group work and her research into the covert and overt content of human relationships.  As alluded to in the introductory video, in this method the director gives the actors, trained or not, a minimum backstory without alluding to any character and story development.  As implied, the crucial element is the director's deep trust in the actors' innate capacity to access the aforementioned archetypal human experiences.  Equally essential is the facilitation by the director in the form of judicious, but timely observations, questions, and "therapeutic" prodding based upon her own experiential knowledge of Jungian insight into interpersonal and emotional processes.  The result is that actors spontaneously create compelling dialogue and story development in real time that is thrilling to behold and experience for all participants.  The scenes that are created through this method are then woven together into a coherent story that is revelatory of human experience, in this case about love.

Longer video with talking heads!

Production Plan!

We will rent a camera that films 4k (RED or Sony fs 700) footage for shoot days.  We are pairing this with Zeiss and Canon Cine lenses to create an exquisite visual treat for the audience.  We are also seeking funding to pay our actors, composer, and crew and all other production fees, of which there are many.  The director and assistant director are volunteering all of their time.  We have been in preproduction for a year and half and are going to shoot the first short, featuring Patrick Greene and Julie Webb in August of 2014. We will be shooting the subsequent shorts every other month following. Our plan is to be done with the entire full-length film in spring of 2016.

Update Video!

Check out a director Maria Allred's third short that she created of herself firedancing all around the architecture of Portland, OR. The camera was primarily set up on a tripod, except a few shots done by Rose Allred. And yes she is really fire dancing on a 12 story ledge. Check it out! (the things she does for art!)

 Update Video!

A previous short film created solely by director Maria Allred and her little DSLR camera.  This appeared on Oregon's PBS station, OPB.

Risks and challenges

As with all of life, and emphasized by process oriented directing, challenges are key to development. There are many challenges and risks that arise in a serious production endeavor. A production team must think thoroughly through these in order to have a solid plan of execution. Within our year and a half of preproduction we have developed a plan of action that imagines many possible twists and turns.

The risks are primarily financial, we have contributed many hours of hard work and personal resources in order to realize this vision. In the current economic conditions for independent filmmakers, a team must be resourceful and think outside the box in order to bring their vision to fruition. We are applying the funding we receive here toward the core equipment needed to produce a big-screen quality film. Fortunately for us, there is a new wave in technology that is allowing that equipment to be much more affordable. We have a team of willing volunteers, and a detailed plan for supplemental funding including: social fundraisers, local sponsorships, grants, local product placement, etc.
