Designed by renowned video game designer and author Scott Rogers, Rayguns & Rocketships is a miniatures board game for 2-4 players. Featuring an inventive dual-scale system, players in Rayguns & Rocketships take command of their bulky-but-powerful Rocketship, as well as their agile crew of Planeteers! Players will need to think strategically and plan ahead as their Rocketship’s movements must be pre-programmed. Luckily, any poor decisions on the Rocketship scale can be quickly adjusted on the crew scale. Provided you have enough action points saved up, you can send your crew to repair the ship, man the Rayguns, or push the engines into overdrive!
You’ll need everything you can muster if you wish to successfully command your crew as you race your opponents to accumulate enough victory points to claim the galaxy for yourself!
Here's our extended look at the rules, strategies, and game play from Episode 03 - The Frozen Fear! out of the Episode book! We hope it gives you a feel for the excitement and strategies found in Rayguns & Rocketships game play. As well as the diversity of content in the episode book.
Scott talks with the New York Film Academy about Rayguns & Rocketships. Please note that he's showing his original prototype in this video.
The Galactic Astro Rangers are a peacekeeping force dedicated to bringing justice to a lawless, broken galaxy. Their ranks consist of adventurers, star jockeys, idealists, and scoundrels. Astro Rangers are the fastest of the Planeteer factions, whether at the cockpit of their speedy Rocketships, or flying their jetpacks through the inky void of space. All Astro Rangers are armed with deadly neuralizer pistols and circuit-swords—AI-driven weapons that give their wielders a lethal advantage!
The Grand Zardian Navy is the military force of the proud Zard race from the planet Zardia. Once feared as savages, the Zard have evolved into highly cultured, highly civilized beings, despite their fearsome appearance. The modern Zardian culture is layered with ceremony, tradition, and manners. Instead of outright warfare, the Zard prefer dueling, and have developed superior melee skills. Swordszardship is taught as soon as a Zard hatchling can wield a blade.
The Star Pirates of Samadi were once the mighty military of the galactic empire, but now they have turned to piracy, displaying a fearsome skull to strike fear into the hearts of their victims, and to show that they take no prisoners. The crew don terrifying skull masks that disguise their identities. Emerging from a hidden base in the Samadi asteroid belt, the Star Pirates prey on passing merchant- and pleasure-ships. Their heavily armored Rocketships possess the strongest Raygun weapons of all of the Planeteers.
The Blaarg Collective are an alien race from another galaxy. They are a hive mind led by a gigantic leader who controls the smaller Blaarglings to carry out his every command. The Blaarglings have no individual identities, and live and die to serve their master as they scurry around their saucer in their mechanical pants. The Blaarg have found the chaos left in the wake of the galactic cataclysm to be the perfect environment to torment any being they encounter, which they dominate with their terrible mind powers. Will the galaxy survive their invasion?
Mercenaries are alternative captains for your standard crew. Occasionally, the captains of these powerful crews need to either celebrate an amazing victory, or nurse a few recently added scars. When these occasions arise, the captains call on the mercenaries to take control of their Rocketships, Rayguns, and Crew until their ready to pilot again. Adding new models, special powers, and gameplay options, mercenaries not only look amazing, they add another level or replay-ability to your game!
The WarWulf is a legendary warrior with a fearsome reputation. Some claim that the WarWulf is thousands of years old and shows up whenever the galaxy is in turmoil. Others say that the WarWulf is the state-of-the-art product of the Empire's weapons manufacturing labs. And a few whisper that the truth is anyone can become a WarWulf – and it is a dread curse passed down through the ages. None have survived a battle against this awesome beast to learn the truth.
Rayguns & Rocketships is a dual-scale miniatures board game that plays over the course of a series of rounds. The objective of the game is to be the crew that earns enough victory points to command dominance over the entire galaxy!
Each round in Rayguns & Rocketships happens in 3 phases:
During this phase, each player will select 3 of their command cards and place them face down into 3 piles.
Starting with the first player, each player flips over their first command card, and moves their ship the indicated amount in the indicated direction.
They also collect the amount of action tokens indicated on the card.
During this phase, all players, starting with the first, will check to see if their ships are in range of any enemy ships. Ships that have crew members on their Rayguns get a bonus to their accuracy and range.
Once the available targets are selected, players will roll a number of d8s to equal the amount of Rayguns facing their target.
Successful hits can either be dealt directly to the ship, blocking the spaces where the blast markers are placed, or can be used to blow up enemy Rayguns.
Each player, starting with the first, can select any number of their crew members to perform the following:
Make a move action (move 2 spaces) and perform one attack, or spend an action token to perform one action.
Actions include things like repairing damage, opening the airlock, using the hatch, or making either a ranged or melee attack.
During this phase, action tokens can be used to repeat the movement and attack cycle, dodge incoming crew-to-crew attacks, or use the special ship features.
After these 3 phases have been completed, players, starting with the first, will flip over their second command card and begin the round cycle again.
Destroying Rayguns, defeating crew members, and dealing damage to your opponents' ships all reward you with victory points. Depending on the number of current players, there is a victory point limit. Once one player has reached that goal, all players will have one final round to do as much damage as they can in an attempt to challenge the victor.
