Hello! Welcome to Sprocket Games' first project on Kickstarter: Keep Running!
It's a quick-playing game based around the legendary tale of the two guys being chased by a bear in the woods. One of them briefly pulls up, grabs a pair of running shoes from his backpack and hastily throws them on. "What are you doing? You'll never outrun it!" yells the guy who is still moving. "I don't need to outrun the bear," replies the first (who by now has rapidly overtaken his friend) - "I just need to outrun YOU."
So yeah. This is the game of that, where between three and eight players will be able to force and fight their way to the front of the pack, leaving their friends behind as The Bear gets ever closer. Each player has a rapidly diminishing hand of cards and one must be played every turn. Roll a die to see how fast you're going, but don't forget the modifier on the card you've put down! Some cards allow you to get more in your hand, keeping you in the game longer. Others will let you attack your opponents, pushing them ever closer to that ever-chasing bear. Run out of cards and you're no longer running - you're dinner!
We'll be using all the funds raised in our Kickstarter campaign to get Keep Running! produced to the highest possible quality. Here at Sprocket Games, we really want to do our best to keep the whole project in the UK; everything possible will be sourced from providers in this country. This not only supports businesses here, it also means that we can keep an eye on things and deal with any issues that may crop up during the production process. Also, please note that any art here is a Work in Progress, but we promise that we'll be posting updates on a regular basis.
Any Kickstarter exclusives for backers?
Oh yes indeed! If you've been following Keep Running!, you'll know that Purple gets a bad deal all the way through the game. If a branch is going to hit anyone in the face, it's Purple. Someone ends up with an untied shoelace? Yeah... it's Purple. The poor thing. Maybe it's time we let her get some revenge. And so we shall... with the Purple Promo Pack!
If you back the campaign at the £20 level or more, you will get one Purple Promo Pack for free for each copy of the game (so for example, buy three copies, get three promo packs). But what do you get in the pack? Well, there's a double-sided Character Card for Purple, just like all the other folks in the game. A lovely, shiny translucent purple die. Oh, and a set of five of these exclusive, KICKSTARTER ONLY cards: Kick Ass, Take Names!
This is a pretty powerful card in the world of Keep Running!, allowing you to scupper the plans of up to three other opponents while also giving you an edge by keeping one of their cards. You'll have to choose the perfect time to play it however, thanks to that pretty hefty -3 modifier. And the only way you'll be able to get Kick Ass, Take Names! in your game is to back the Kickstarter project. Once we're funded, there will be NO MORE OF THESE CARDS AT ALL.
If you'd like extra sets of the cards and dice, we'll be doing them for £5 each but remember that you'll be getting one included for every copy of the game that you pledge for anyway. However, we know that some folks like picking up extras, so the opportunity to get some more will run through until the end of the campaign. Just add £5 to your pledge for each extra set. We want to say thank you to the people who are kind enough to help get Keep Running! off the ground, and this is our way to doing so. A little something extra that, when the campaign is done, will NEVER be available EVER AGAIN. EVER.
What else is in the box?
Well, you'll get everything you need for up to eight people to play. That means 80 Game Cards, 8 Status Cards and 8 dice, plus instructions (of course) and any stretch goals that we may possibly attain.
Where will your money go?
Well, everything costs something, so your pledged funds will be going to making Keep Running! an actual thing. From paying for the art to getting everything printed up, there'll be no cutting corners - we're determined to make this game the best it can be. As you'd expect, we also have plans for some stretch goals should we be lucky enough to surpass our initial target, but we'll keep those under wraps for now. Rest assured, they will be pretty cool.
How do I know if the game is any good?
The rules for Keep Running! are already available over on Board Game Geek, so feel free to check them out (and even ask questions if you like) but why not go the whole hog and try it for yourself? There's a print and play version available that requires nothing more than eleven sheets of paper, a bit of ink and you finding some dice. Just click here and get printing! Risks and challenges
One of the biggest complaints that the community has when it comes to game-related projects is delay; that time between the end of a Kickstarter project and its arrival on your gaming table. By keeping production here in the UK, we'll be able to deal with any production issues that arise in a matter of hours as opposed to days or even weeks.
A second problem we have seen is that folks will back a game, then when it arrives they discover that it's not as much fun as they hoped. By providing you with a print and play version of the game from the very start of the campaign, you'll be able to try it out for yourself before you even have to commit a single penny.
Here at Sprocket Games, we want to bring fun games to people all around the world. We realise that at the moment we're something of an unknown property, but everyone has to start somewhere, and we're not entirely green.
