About this project
The Five Dollar Fidget Spinner!
Fidgets are all the rage right now. They're being 3D printed, machined, glued together, you name it! I didn't even know how much I would enjoy using one until I made my own. Not only are they extremely fun to play with, evidence shows that they can have extremely therapeutic effects. Fidget spinners have been shown to relieve anxiety, increase concentration, and help with social disorders such as ADD and ADHD.
*I know! Its $5 USD, I'm in Canada, so its $6, but the Six Dollar Fidget Spinner doesn't sound as good.
Why make one?
Well, first off, I originally made my own because that is what I do. I make stuff. While I was making them I was constantly being contacted with requests to send one to "this child" or "this friend" who could really use one. It made me realize that there were a lot of people in need of a device like this, but without the means to make their own or buy one for the cost that is currently available.
The problem is that, of the spinners out in the wild right now, most are $15 or more. While this cost is completely reasonable due to small volume production(usually 3d printed, or hand frabricated), to some people that can be the difference between affordable, and unattainable. I decided to try and bridge that cost gap and reach those in need.
The end goal is to have a retail version in stores that will sell for $5.99. This is the beginning of that venture.
I have made a lot of designs. A lot. I wanted to see how different designs work in the hand, how they feel to carry around, and most importantly, how they spin. I have all of my prototypes 3D printed by a Company called Shapeways. They're my go to when it comes to rapid prototyping.
After all of the different designs I decided to hold a giveaway in order to determine which would be the most appealing to the customer.
After over 250 surveys the Triplex and the Trama both came out on top. However, in the interest of attaining the $5 price point, having only a single bearing really helps with the cost, therefore the Trama ended up winning out. And in my opinion having handled both, a lot, the Trama is much better to carry and spin.
The colours available will probably be what has been shown(black, blue, red, green etc.) but extra colours may be added.
To check the size of the fidget spinner in your hand you can print out this PDF: http://www.idlehandsdev.com/fidgets/trama/TramaSize.pdf
Print it at 100% and cut it out.
Share With Your Fidgety Friends!
Help it get funded by sharing this with your friends. I'm sure they fidget as well. I can't count how many people suddenly realized how helpful a fidget spinner could be once I gave them one of mine!
Bearing Caps: If we hit 3 times the funding goal I will introduce a bearing cap option to add on to any pledge, it will be $1 per set of two. The first goal will only have only one colour option, White or Black(To be determined).
At 4 times the funding goal I will introduce the same colours available for the caps as there are for the Fidgets! The bearing caps will likely have a concave area for your finger(instead of flat show in image).
Second Design Pre-Order Discount: If we hit 10 times the funding goal ($55000CAD), I will introduce the other model as a pre-order option. All backers will be notified when the pre-order/kickstarter is available, and they will be given a discount if they would like to purchase the other model after the Tramas have shipped. The decision to only have one model during the Kickstarter is to keep thing simple, keep shipping the same, and ensure a much more swift delivery of the Trama.
See Update #9 for more details on this!
The second model chosen is the Triplex.
This would be an incredible feat to achieve! Make sure you share with your friends. Lets hit these stretch goals!
Add-on pledges allow you to add on upgrades and other options to your reward. Basically it is any option that isn't part of the default Reward itself. All you have to do to purchase the add on option is to add the amount in $CAD to your reward tier. For example: To get the ceramic ball bearing for the $6CAD Reward Tier "1 x Fidget spinner" you would add $2 CAD to the $6 Reward. You pledge would then be 6$CAD + $2CAD + Shipping.
Due to possible multiple configurations, each add-on will be confirmed with the backer before shipping to ensure they get what they want!
Ceramic Ball Bearings: Some people may wish to upgrade to a ceramic ball bearings in their spinner. Ceramic ball bearings will spin smoother, faster, and longer. They are not necessary for your spinner as steel bearings will work just as well for the average person.
Do not select the "$2 CAD Ceramic Ball Bearing" Reward as your reward for any reason. You can only choose one reward on Kickstarter and if you choose the $2 reward after backing a $6+ reward it will drop you down to the $2 level and you will not be set up to receive a Fidget Spinner. Make sure your Reward/Pledge says that you are receiving a fidget spinner.
Well, I have already done the designs, prototypes, product testing, and consumer surveys so... not much!
I just need this to get funded so I can pay to get the injection mold made and start production! Tooling takes about 30-35 days after payment. If the Kickstarter ends Mid to late February then the molds should be made by the end of March. Once its all said and done the products should be ready to ship by May if all goes according to plan!
Lets Keep in Contact.
There is nothing worse than wondering whats going on, and not getting any answers! Follow my social media accounts to keep up to date! I often post information and cool pictures on Twitter and Instagram.

**After completion of the Kickstarter, all backers receiving fidget spinners will be contacted about picking a colour(or a simpler solution will be created) - If no option for colour is picked before the ship date it will be chosen for you.
Risks and challenges
This is my first time getting injection mold tooling manufactured. So choosing a supplier is important. As of yet the chosen supplier they has shown to have great communication and has worked with companies like Sparkfun and alike. Keeping good communication is key.
Everything else should go smoothly.
I have a source for bearings, but I'm always looking for higher quality parts, so therefore the bearing colour/design/manufacturer may change.
