About this project

What is it?

ESP Everywhere Components.
ESP Everywhere Components.

Well, the "ESP Everywhere" is an ESP8266 connected to an FTDI mounted on a special "Kickstarter Edition" PCB. Its small form factor allows you to keep it on a keychain and so you can bring your ESP8266 everywhere; hence the name. It has a small connector that allows you to access 5 GPIOS, and one ADC pin. The FTDI means you can plug it right into your computer, find the Serial Port, and start playing around right away!

Programming through Arduino IDE

They ESP Everywhere can be programmed using the very simple Arduino IDE. I'm guessing if you're reading this, you probably either already know a lot of this, or you really want to learn how to use it.

Make/100 Project

The ESP Everywhere was custom built for the Make/100 challenge. You will be 1 of 100 awesome people who will be part of a fun project that will have an extremely limited run of only 100 pieces. Lets face it, there are lots of useful ESP8266 boards out there, Adafruit, Sparkfun etc.

The thing that makes ESP Everywhere unique is that it’s not just an ESP8266 board, it is also a statement that you're part of the maker community. I think the Make/100 project is a very cool way for Kickstarter to support and promote the maker community, which is why I was so excited to design a project to take part in it. I like the idea of influencing people into becoming makers. We need more Makers. More Doers. Thinkers. Creators. You name it! I think this is a great step in the right direction.

Join the Make/100.

If you're part of the Make/100 Reward(#3) you get:

  • ESP Everywhere Board Assembled!
  • Name listed on the GitHub as a Backer and Supporter
  • Your name read out loud (All 100!) on the assembly video I will make for the boards. - See my other videos! https://www.youtube.com/seanhodginsfilms
  • To know you're supporting the Make community.

What is an ESP8266?

Essentially the ESP8266 is a very commonly used(for good reason) microcontroller with the ability to connect to WiFi Networks. It can be programmed using the Arduino IDE which makes it really great for just about anyone who is into electronics and technology. I use them in a lot of my projects because they are so versatile.

Normally these boards either need to be wired by hand to something that can communicate to it (Via UART) and they are soldered to a board to make it easier. In the case of the ESP Everywhere, you already have the device that talks to the USB of your computer on the circuit board! Making things a lot easier for first time makers and hobbyists.

Have your name featured in my Video!

If you're part of the make/100 not only will your name be featured on the GitHub page with the other (hopefully) 100 people, but I will also personally say everyone one of your names the video where I assemble all 100 of these boards.

*You can of course opt out and/or just be anonymous.

Feel Like Soldering?

You can order just the bare circuit board (Reward #2). You'll still be a part of the project, but your name won't be listed as part of the Make/100 crew. You will be able to still have a Kickstarter Special ESP8266, but you will have to assemble it yourself!

**Be Aware, Surface mount components and 0402 component sizes, are you prepared?

Breakout Board

I have created a breakout board for the 8 Pin JST SH connector that will be on the ESP Everywhere. You can use a JST 8 pin connector to connect the breakout board and the ESP everywhere.

If you would like the breakout board you can add $8 CAD to your pledge and it will be supplied with your $19 or $22 reward. It will come with the surface mount connector soldered on, as well as a 6" cable for connecting the two boards.

Protection!

I have designed a protective back for the board which will be available on Shapeways for anyone to purchase here: http://shpws.me/NPIn

It is not needed for the board itself, but it is a great way to protect the components. There is an ADD-ON pledge($9CAD) if you want me to include a back with your assembled board. This will save you the cost of shipping from Shapeways and the hassle of ordering it yourself. This is a non-profit item on my part. If you add it on, you and I will be paying the same cost, but I will cover the shipping from Shapeways.

Add-on Pledges

Some people may also want unassembled boards, or extra backs. You may add-on pledge amounts to receive more items, but only for certain reward since it can change the shipping amount. If you are part of the $19 Reward or the $22 Reward, you can add-on extra circuit boards and protective backs. The reason for this is they are already shipping in a larger box, so there is room for more items to be shipped.

Add these amounts to your pledge to add extra parts:

  • Bare PCB - $6 CAD Add-on
  • Protective Back - $9 CAD Add-on
  • Extra ESP8266 Modules - $4 CAD Add-on
  • Breakout Board - $8 CAD Add-on

I will confirm your add-ons when the Kickstarter is finished and before your items ship. If you want to order a large number of items, please contact me prior as I may have to adjust shipping.

Its Open Source!

Most of my projects are completely open source. This project will be no different. You can check out the project on Hackaday.io for lots of info:

The Project will also be available on GitHub so that if you don't end up being part of the 100, you can still get your own boards made. If you pull it off GitHub and feel like throwing in a $1 backer reward, or a donation that would be great!

The boards were created in KiCad, which is also open source software.

Whats Left?

Basically just ordering the boards and assembling them. The design has been tested and proven. The funding will go towards ordering the parts and boards, and that is it! I will assemble them, make a video about assembling them, test them all out, and ship them!

Follow Along.

There is nothing worse than wondering whats going on, and not getting any answers! Follow my social media accounts to keep up to date! I often post information and cool pictures on Twitter and Instagram.

Risks and challenges

There are very few risks and challenges. I have had a lot of experience with designing boards and small batch assembly. I have very good contact with PCBWay and have no reason to believe there will be an issue with their production. In the extremely unlikely event that PCBWay cant fulfill the order, there are other manufacturers lined up. It is a small project with a very small risk. This isn't my first ESP8266 board.
