About

ACTION! TEAMWORK! SPORTS!

What happens when a soccer player and a baseball player are pitted against a basketball player and a roller derby player on ice? Super Slam Dunk Touchdown tackles that question and punts a home run! This classic-feeling sports game lets you and your friends create custom sports teams to compete for goals in a frantic feud that's simple to pick up, and hard to put down.

THE ATHLETES

THE GAME

Controls are simple: Shoot, Pass and Turbo. But under the hood, the game itself is simulated with 3D physics. So an american football bounces awkwardly around the court, and a bowling ball slides far along the ice. Learn how each ball behaves on different surfaces, and how each player shoots to become the ultimate sports master!

THE KICKSTARTER

The basic gameplay is working and was a massive success at the first PAX South. So what more needs to be done? In a word: Art! Up until this year, I had the distinct pleasure of working with my friend Chris of Mad Science Studios for all the art in the game. Unfortunately, his schedule didn't allow him to continue working on the project, and now the best bet for getting the game completed is hiring out for the remaining art on a contractual basis.

The baseball player still needs to be created, the existing character art needs polish and the user interface is lacking. Plus, there are additional random events I want to put in the game, such as the marching band, cheerleaders, and more! With a larger art budget, this game could look a lot better, and have more fun features. The funding goal is fairly modest as far as Kickstarter goes, because Super Slam Dunk Touchdown isn't far from the finish line!

THE REWARDS

You can make this game a grand slam! Support indie game development and a winner can be you, with sweet backer rewards:

$5: Pledge even a little bit, and get a cool SSDT sticker... and the deep satisfaction of knowing that you are making the indie revolution possible!

 $15: Get the game! A digital, DRM-Free copy of the game is yours. But why wait for release, when early access is also yours! Non-Windows platform release is dependent on stretch goals, but if the game gets a Mac or Linux port, you will get those too!

 $25: Get the highly coveted SSDT-shirt! These ship before the game so you can wear yours proudly while awaiting the SSDT kickoff! Also includes the sticker!

 $35/$40: Get all of the above rewards! Shirts/sticker will ship first, game will ship when available. Early birds save $5!

 $60: Get all of the above rewards, plus your name on the Backer Special Thanks section of the game credits for going above and beyond!

 $80: Get all of the above rewards, PLUS an official Tipping Goat Referee iron-on patch and a second SSDT-shirt in a size of your choosing!

 $120: Get all of the above rewards, plus a custom pixel art version of you in the Backer Special Thanks section of the end credits! You will need to provide a portrait of yourself to claim the pixel art reward.

UPDATE: $80+ REWARD LEVELS NOW INCLUDE A 2nd SSDT-SHIRT AND AN IRON-ON PATCH -- FREE!

 $225: Get all of the above rewards, plus an animated pixel art representation of yourself that randomly appears as a cheering fan in the crowd! You will need to provide a full body photo, or preferably a short, full body movie clip or animated GIF of yourself cheering in an appropriate manner to claim the pixel art reward. Note that real life sports team names or logos can't be used in the game, and the colors of any clothing may change to match the home or away teams.

UPDATE: $80+ REWARD LEVELS NOW INCLUDE A 2nd SSDT-SHIRT AND AN IRON-ON PATCH -- FREE!

$3000: Get all of the above awards, plus work with Tipping Goat to create a whole new playable athelete from an unrepresented team sport! Before you go too crazy, keep in mind it must fit within the game to some degree; swimming, truck racing, horse riding and game hunting are some examples of things that won't work. But lacrosse, tennis, or dodgeball would work great, and even sports like bowling, volleyball, and boxing are all fair game. Sports that are unknown in the USA or specific to certain parts of the world would be a great addition to Super Slam Dunk Touchdown as well, like hurling, sepak takraw, and jai alai, just to name a few! If you've got ideas you want to see, this is the time to act! Please contact me before choosing this reward to ensure we can agree on a new sport!

UPDATE: $80+ REWARD LEVELS NOW INCLUDE A 2nd SSDT-SHIRT AND AN IRON-ON PATCH -- FREE!

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL... YOU HELP DESIGN THE GAME!

Since the game is still missing content, all backers get a voice in what that content will be. I have a few ideas for random events and stretch goal specifics, but if the backers speak, I will listen. I'd like to hear what sports elements could enhance the gameplay, offer new challenges, or generally enrich the game. The bigger the art budget, the greater the possibilities.

Content isn't the only thing to weigh in on. Anyone who is a fan of local multiplayer games knows customization is king. You and your friends want to play your games your way. The options in SSDT are currently a bit lacking, but a full-on, custom match screen is planned. The question is, what are the most important customizations to you?

I'd like to add that while I'm an American, I recognize that sports are a global, human-wide phenomenon. If you're outside the USA, please speak out and get the sports you know and love represented! What is unique and fun about your favorite sport? How could those elements be incorporated in SSDT?

THE 7th INNING STRETCH

What if the project is over funded? Well the first thing that will change is nothing! I will continue on course to deliver the game, using the original goal-fueled budget, as promised. This is to ensure everyone of you who paid will get what you paid for, around the time you expected. Once the game is out, however, I will continue to spend the art budget enhancing the game. More content will be added regularly as free updates until all stretch goals are met!

1st Quarter Stretch Goal - $25,000: Two new sports plus two new ports!

  • Two new playable athletes from two new sports!
  • Backers weigh in and help choose which sports!
  • PLUS! Macintosh port
  • PLUS! Linux port
  • Both new ports will be made available to backers who got the game as a reward!

2nd Quarter Stretch Goal - $30,000: New balls! Each ball contains 216 animation frames, representing different angles of 3D geometry. Each ball also has its own size and unique physics properties that control its bounciness, weightiness, and smoothness. In some cases, balls have unique geometry. The existing ball art needs some polishing, but while we're at it, why not add some more balls? Many sports are still under-represented in SSDT. How about:

  • Cricket ball
  • Dodge ball
  • Beach ball
  • Volleyball
  • Or...?!

Send your ideas! I want to hear what you think would be a good addition!

3rd Quarter Stretch Goal - $55,555: Five or more mini games!I have a number of ideas for SSDT-adjacent local multiplayer party games including:

  • Royal Rumble: many players, many balls, one goal, no teams, no goalie!
  • Dodge bowl: What if you crossed dodge ball with bowling? Something awesome!
  • Muckle ball: Can you hang on to the ball the longest? How about when everyone tries to tackle you?
  • Bomb ball: The timer is ticking! Score later for bigger points, but if time runs out, BOOM!
  • Shuffle ball: Shoot the ball and get close to the line, but not over, and while you're at it, knock the other player's ball away! Or just tackle them.

I may come up with more ideas, or replace some of these ideas with better or more workable ideas depending on the money raised. And as always, I want to hear your ideas too!

3rd Quarter Stretch Goal - $70,000: Season mode
  • Build a custom team, name it, choose your team colors!
  • Travel the world by bus to unlock athletes for your team, new uniform colors, new types of balls and more by taking on the whole SSDT league!
  • Couch co-op! Play either with your friends, or solo!

4th Quarter Stretch Goal - $100,000: Five stadiums!

New stadiums will appear in season mode as unlockables, and will be available in quick match as well! Stadiums will have unique properties that affect gameplay. For example, new stadiums could have new ways to score, new floors, new custom hazards and more! Here are some ideas:

  • Practice Lot: A hard concrete surface in a public park. Every sports team starts somewhere! Watch out for dogs, trash cans and other obstacles. No ref, no rules!
  • Sportsball Court: A basketball-style arena with hard corners and cheer leaders! Watch out for that referee...
  • Beaver Rink: Antics on ice in a hockey-style arena with rounded corners. Watch out for the ice resurfacing truck and beer blimp!
  • Alamo Stadium: A long grass field with end zones, field goals and no goalies! Fans can be unruly, and beware the marching band!
  • World Bowl: SSDT in a bowling alley? Yes! The answer is yes.

5th Quarter Overtime >= $150,000: SPORTS!SPORTS!SPORTS!

Includes ALL of the following:

  • 2 new in-game balls!
  • 2 new stadiums!
  • 2 new playable sports athletes!
  • 2 new mini games!
  • PLUS: The bigger the budget, the more can be added! Backers decide!

Risks and challenges

The core quick-match gameplay is already in place and had a tremendous reception at PAX South. The only risks are getting the new art finished on time, fixing bugs, balancing players and implementing a few more fun random events and customization options. The most major item left is creating the baseball player and that character is underway.

I'm working with a few great artists, and paying as I go. Some of the new art has been paid for, and I'm doing this Kickstarter in part to pay that back to myself, and to continue to fund art until the game is complete. If for whatever reason I have to find a new artist due to some unforeseeable problem, I will find another one and complete the project.

What's left:
* Baseball player
* Improved title screen
* Improved menus
* Custom match screen
* New random events (cheerleaders, marching band, etc)
* Better team AI
* AI difficulty adjustment
* Bigger better feedback for successfully scoring/dunking
* Bug fixes

I've been a programmer for 16 years professionally, and building games since I was a teenager. I don't foresee any major programming challenges left in this project.

I do promise more fun events, but I don't promise any specific type or number. I will try out ideas and see what works and what doesn't, and get the art for those that do. Worst case, I deliver new events, best case I deliver a bunch of new events!

Customization options are already in place, and adding more is fairly trivial. A better UI will take more effort on my part, and additional art, but a menu isn't exactly the toughest challenge I will have faced on this project. Everything is on track and can only get better from here!

Reward Risks:

A lot of people have asked me to reassure them about my ability to deliver the rewards and not go broke, so here it is:

Sticker Risks: Sticker quality will vary based on how many I end up having to ship. Bulk stickers are cheap and the more you buy the better the quality for the price. They are an inexpensive fun reward I can give to a lot of people. $5 within the US will cover the stamp and sticker. Not only will the reward be paid for, the extra money will go towards the art budget.

The Game Risks: SSDT will be made available on a website for you to download. This costs me nothing. And with no shipping involved at the $15 pledge amount, all the money goes towards the art budget.

The SSDT-Shirt Risks: They will be ordered from the same guy who made the shirts that people have seen, won, know and love. I see no reason to change! If something goes wrong, there are other t-shirt places that are still a good deal, if slightly more expensive. The $25 price for the shirts will bear either cost, as well as shipping within the US. The world-wide shipping price is in place for the extra costs incurred shipping around the world. Not only will the reward be paid for, the extra money will go towards the art budget.

Pixel Art You Risks: This is a low resolution pixel portrait that will take an artist no more than 2 hours to do. The cost of the reward is lower than the pledge amount, so again, not only will the reward be paid for, the extra money will go towards the art budget. The only risk is if you haaate it, in which case, it will go back for 1 revision based on your feedback. Additional revisions will depend on the art budget. This is how costs will be controlled.

Super Fan: This would take an artist no more than 8 hours to do for the first one, and the rest will go more quickly. The best part about this reward is it will provide a lively set of fans for the crowd, which needs polish anyway. This reward helps the game as much as it is fun for the backer. Worst case it breaks even and we get a nicer crowd for the game, best case there's extra money for the art budget *AND* a nicer crowd for the game! The only risk again is that you are super unhappy, in which case it will go back for one revision based on your feedback. Additional revisions will depend on the art budget. This is how costs will be controlled.

Add a sport: This is the biggest undertaking as far as delivering a reward will go, and this is why the price is so high. Creating a new character is very time consuming, and getting it right is even more so. First off, the character will be created to suit the needs of the game, and not the person pledging for the reward. I simply promise to add an athlete from a mutually agreed upon sport in a way that makes Super Slam Dunk Touchdown more interesting and fun. If you are concerned, please contact me if before pledging to make sure we can agree.

That's it! If you are going to be at GDC 2015 or SXSW Interactive 2015, come by the Tipping Goat booth and check out the game!
