About

Roughly 1 in 5 people have dyslexia, making it our most common learning difference. But dyslexia is still so stigmatized that students face additional barriers to literacy, graduation, and employment. The result? Low self-esteem, high dropout rates, a widening achievement gap, and millions unaware of their potential.

We want to change that. With your help, we’ve released the first free video-based screening tool at identifyingdyslexia.org. Our aim is to help those with dyslexia self-identify, and to empower families and schools with the truth about the world’s most common learning difference.

The idea for this tool started in 2016 as we were filming School Stories, a documentary on the struggles of dyslexic students, their families, and teachers. We quickly found out just how many people identified with these stories and felt empowered, and even realized they had dyslexia and related processing issues as well.

With this assessment tool, we can transform literacy and learning in a world where only a few can afford outside testing and tutoring. Too many suffer in a system that neither recognizes nor accommodates their dyslexia. Identifying Dyslexia is dedicated to changing the way we see and treat learning differences, and our video tool is one of many initiatives to accomplish that.

We hope you will consider joining this movement for dyslexia awareness and acceptance by pledging what you can and spreading the word. There are many ways to help:

  • Share this campaign with family and friends, or post the link on social media.
  • Follow us @DyslexicDays on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
  • Test out the video tool on our website and leave us your review.

Risks and challenges

Kickstarter is all or nothing. If we achieve our funding goal, our main challenge will be engaging school communities to ensure that the people who need this tool the most have access to it. To this end, we will work with a grassroots network of dyslexia advocates: from state chapters of Decoding Dyslexia to school officials to parent groups. As the year unfolds, we'll keep you posted on progress via Kickstarter and IdentifyingDyslexia.org.
