About James Dixon

James Dixon, the voice of PBN, is an award-winning broadcaster with three decades of hard-hitting investigative reporting under his belt. James began his journalism career as the editor of the Daily Onlooker, the undergraduate newspaper at his alma mater, Wyorado Polytechnic University. Even then, James had a nose for news; he gained nationwide attention when he broke the story of a widespread fraternity cheating scandal. He has carried that knack for scoops with him as he made the switch from print to radio. From his distinguished service in the US Army as the anchorman of the Stars and Bars Radio Hour, to his Axiom award for extraordinary reporting on the wildland firestorms of ’49, the name Dixon has been synonymous with integrity and the dogged pursuit of truth.

Craving More of the PBN Universe?

Play Our Mobile Game, “Wavy Navy”!

James Dixon has been investigating the events of “Wavy Navy” from the very beginning, starting with the mysterious disappearance of the USS Nebrahoma. His investigations offer players valuable hints, as well as providing background information on our retro-futurist universe. What’s more, there are secret messages hidden within the PBN podcasts that, when deciphered, give cheat codes for the game. But you have to be a Fission Ranger to figure them out!

The Story

The USS Nebrahoma, a huge Tesla-class aircraft carrier, has mysteriously disappeared at sea. No wreckage, nor any of trace of its 4000 crewmen, has been found. What mysterious force could cause a ship of that size to vanish? Is it the Reds? Pirates? Or the frightening new political force gaining power across the world’s oceans, known only as “the Collective”? As Captain Hatch of the USS Maine York, you have been ordered to find the Nebrahoma. What you’ll discover instead is a massive conspiracy centered on strange codes, lunatic leaders, and technology that may not be of this Earth…or even from this solar system.

The Action

Based upon the classic 1983 Wavy Navy, this game is a fixed shooter in which your vessel is attacked by aircraft overhead. You respond with your own missiles and the more advanced weaponry that can be recovered from downed airships. Enemy pilots can also be captured for intelligence and additional bonuses.

Between battles, there is a mystery to solve. Investigate the Collective, a loose alliance between newly-formed island nations, all of whom possess firepower that far outstrips their size and wealth. To unravel the conspiracy, you’ll have to bluff or trick enemy pilots into revealing information such as secret codes, the source of their advanced weaponry, and the person who ordered the destruction of the Nebrahoma.

Special Features

Wavy Navy offers classic game action with 21st century style. The original Wavy Navy was created in 1983 for the Apple II. Although much beloved, this fixed shooter obviously needed updating for the modern era. The action is based on the 1983 version, but with better graphics and all-new weapons. The characters, missions, artwork, and score are also totally original. So not only can you get your fix of an old-school game, but you can solve the mystery of the Collective and save the planet as well!

The game has multiple surprise endings. At every level, your choices make a difference. You may be offered the chance to negotiate with the enemy, to bluff an opponent, or to attack without warning. Each option affects your future. In the end, only you can decide who dominates the planet…but you may not be aware of the consequences of your choices until it’s too late.

Entertaining Characters

You are joined at the helm by Lieutenant Starr and Lieutenant Norfleet, who are as loyal to you as they are snippy with each other. Together you encounter an increasingly strange set of personalities…all of whom are determined to see you sunk! There’s Captain Henry Penn, the ultimate Ayn Randian capitalist; Captain Orlov, who’s almost more interested in blowing up his fellow conspirators; Vice Admiral Euphrasia de Lestonnac, a religious fanatic who runs her island like an armed nunnery; and many others. Bluff, bribe, or bargain with each of these petty dictators in order to discover the true power behind them all.

Coming Soon!

The first chapter is available to play now, and the rest of the game will be released soon! Be sure to check out the Planetary Broadcast Network for game hints and codes, and stay tuned for further updates.

What is Retrofuturism?

If you are caught up on the PBN Evening News, you’ve probably noticed that things are a bit different in the good ol’ US of A that James Dixon lives in. On the surface it’s the 1950s we know and love from black and white TV, but flying cars, short-range space travel, robot servants, and many other futuristic conveniences are common, all made possible by atomic power. This retro-futurist version of the 1950s is influenced by the predictive fiction of that era, including magazines, comic books, B movies, Heinlein juveniles, and more. It’s a reimagining of the culture and style of the decade, meshed with all the technology found in its cheesiest pulp sci-fi. In James Dixon’s world, the economy is booming, and so is the Cold War—capitalism wrestles with communism all across Europe and Asia. The US map shaped up a bit differently, but the postwar baby boom is in full swing in all 52 states. After the war ended, ladies quit their jobs at the plasma munitions plants, and soon many families were moving to the newly constructed suburbs to build their dream homes—with fully-stocked bomb shelters underneath. It’s a great time to be an American! But all roses have their thorns, and this atomic-powered version of the 1950s is no exception. With new technology comes new problems—in particular, the growing number of sentient robots.

The Robot Personhood Movement

We all love the convenience of having a service bot, but the protests that grew out of the Lindbergh 71628 wrongful termination case raised difficult ethical questions. Fueled by the statements of their charismatic robot leader, Adam, the Society for The Advancement of Robot Rights has primarily tried to effect change through peaceful protests. Meanwhile, the vigilante bots of the “Loose Bolts” have taken the fight to the streets through vandalism and violent clashes with police and military units. What’s next for this so-called “Robot Spring”? Adam says that sentient AI only want what we all want—life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—but can we trust him? To find out, watch for our special report on Robot Personhood, featuring an exclusive, one-on-one interview of Adam, by our own James Dixon.
