At Intelligent Design we love our coffee, but what office doesn't run on the delightful, caffeinated beverage. We're also big fans of the Cuppow, you know, the über rad attachment to turn your Mason Jar into a drinking vessel. Well, one day while hanging at HQ and sipping some hot Joe, the idea of making coffee directly into my Mason Jar hit me. Off to the drawing board.
With a very rough prototype in hand I was off to my go-to metal shop for fabrication advice and pricing. That initial meeting turned up some valuable advice as far as materials and manufacturing. It was time to source a few basic parts to assemble our first functioning prototype.
Now that we had a funnel in hand, we could knock out the simple base needed to fasten the Pour Mason to a Mason Jar. You'll see in the picture above the funnel is perched in a piece of cardboard. That became the pattern to fashion the Aluminum base needed for the funnel.
That brings us to version 3.0, the first of the prototypes to be functioning. It was tested right along side a Chemex in a pour-over coffee test done very methodically. Coffee measured via a scale, water measured and temperature exactly the same for each brew. The pouring of the water over the coffee was timed as well. In the end, the Pour Mason made a comparable cup of coffee. The owner of Alabaster [Karl] confirmed the Pour Mason coffee as well as two of the Barista's that work there, Eli & me and one patron that was at the coffee bar at the time.
This is where Kickstarter comes in, we have a working prototype but need your help to raise the funds to produce the Aluminum funnels in much higher numbers than we currently order. The issue is not production or making the funnels, it's just purchasing in quantity discounts.
Much of our production plan is already done. We have three strategic partners in manufacturing the Pour Mason. The first is a company only a couple of hours from HQ who will be manufacturing our Aluminum funnels. They are a very reputable metal spinning company and can easily produce quantities from 1-10,000+. We are also working with a local metal shop who will laser cut the base piece needed for the funnel from sheet aluminum. Lastly we have teamed with one of the best welder/fabricators in our area, they will be doing the final assembly.
Along with the manufacturing, we have logo design and packaging all taken care of as well. Essentially at the end of this campaign, we will have a retail ready product all due to your help.
• Where would you use a Pour Mason?
Intelligent Design Company is comprised of two entrepreneurs from very different ends of the spectrum. One a graphic & industrial designer, the other, a tech. sector business owner. Joshua Lepley knows Kickstarter well, having had several successful campaigns, he returns to launch a whole new product with friend Eli Janetis. Together they have extensive knowledge in working with engineers and manufacturers to bring a shelf ready product to fruition.
Joshua and Eli will work hand in hand with the manufacturers to produce the product exactly the way we envisioned right here in the USA. Our partners for producing the Pour Mason are long proven and can easily handle this project as they specialize in the processes needed to produce such a product.
It's our sincere hope that Pour Mason excites you all enough to want to see it come to fruition. We have lots of exciting ideas, but we need to launch one at a time. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have about us or the product.
But wait, there's more....
MID AUGUST :: Launch campaign. Analyze data & feedback during campaign.
MID SEPTEMBER :: Campaign ends, production begins. Just as soon as the campaign ends [assuming it's fully funded] we will hit the ground running with production. Regardless of the 2 week payment delay from Amazon, we will work under our net 30 terms with our manufacturers and get the Pour Mason on line.
OCTOBER :: It is our goal to totally fulfill the campaign by Octobers end. We see that as a very achievable goal since so much of the backend work is completed. There is the chance, that the campaign is funded far beyond our expectations so we've left ourselves November as a buffer.
NOVEMBER :: We've looked at this project from several different angles and cannot imagine not being fulfilled by Novembers end [if we need the extra time]. We will be very much in touch with updates during the entire process.

** Special Thanks to Karl and the Krew @ Alabaster Coffee Roaster & Tea Company.
*** Disclaimer: There is no partnership with Cuppow, we just love their rad products.

Risks and challenges
We do not foresee any issues with completing our project. We are a two man team made up of a wildly successful entrepreneur in the technology sector and an industrial & graphic designer who knows the ropes of Kickstarter, having been part of 5 successful campaigns in the past.
We have working prototypes and manufacturing partners lined up. Design, packaging, business and so forth is done. This isn't our first rodeo so we're confident in our ability to wow the socks off of our backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
