Who are we and what do we want to do?
Dedicated to music on vinyl, iCrates magazine was founded two years ago as an online platform for analogue music.
Curated from Berlin and with an international team of writers, illustrators and designers, iCrates has grown to produce daily content covering a diverse range of influential scenes and artists, old and new, whose stories - like the records they produce - are timeless.
Furthermore, through our interviews with record stores and our focus on independent vinyl culture - the collectors, DJ’s and labels - iCrates offers a platform to support the resurgence of this wonderful medium.
Until now, iCrates has only existed online, but being a magazine dedicated to analogue music it has always been our dream to put it into print.
So here's the deal: We want to produce the very first iCrates Annual, a high-quality print magazine with exclusive features and the best online content from the last year - 96 pages with 25 features (interviews, articles and reviews) celebrating independent music culture, past and present.
Complete with wonderful illustrations and photography from our world-class illustrators and designers, the iCrates Annual will, like a vinyl record, be as much about the design and packaging as the content itself.
What will be so special about the iCrates Annual?
Since the independent music scene is so central to what iCrates is all about, we want to create a printed magazine which stays true to these ideals:
- Interviews, articles, reviews, record shop profiles, photo essays, "Dig of the Year", Vinyl Q&A and more.
- A collector’s item; hand-numbered, limited edition print magazine. Once they’re gone they’re gone!
- 12” LP format with bespoke record sleeve dust jacket.
- No advertising! Independent means independent.
- Full-colour printing on high-end, sustainably-sourced paper.
- Free delivery if you pledge!
Why are we so bothered about printing a magazine?
This is a question we have been asked a lot during this process, but feel like it's perhaps the easiest to answer. Printing a magazine is really just a reflection of our love for vinyl records. A print magazine offers a different experience for the reader (and a different challenge for us) and as a platform connecting the analogue and the digital, we're excited about returning the magazine to the physical world!
Here are the three main reasons why we have decided to print a physical copy of iCrates magazine:
- We want to print a magazine for the same reason we love vinyl records; The aesthetic, the experience and the culture that it documents.
- To say thank you to our readers, old and new.
- To, at last, be able pay our team for their contributions.
"I agree with Prince that "the internet is over". Do something meaningful instead and let your parents waste away their time on Facebook... however there are some resourceful sites that I still visit and iCrates is one of them." - DJ Frank Gossner (VoodooFunk)

How are we going to do it?
Since its birth two years ago, iCrates has been a collective project and labour of love for all of us. Unfortunately, love alone can’t print a magazine. We’ve set our target at $26,000. Here’s how it breaks down:
- $15,000 to print the iCrates Annual
- $6,000 for distribution (that includes free delivery for YOU!)
- $5,000 to pay our team for their contributions.
We want to do this right. No hidden costs for you guys, a fair pay for our contributors and a magazine we hope you’ll enjoy reading as much as we love making it.
What makes iCrates different?
Unlike many other music magazines which tend towards short-term, expedient content, iCrates prioritizes in-depth journalism that really gets to the heart of the stories behind the music, whether it’s Roger O’Donnell from The Cure telling us the history of the synthesizer, A Guy Called Gerald recounting the birth of acid house, Sir David Rodigan going into detail about soundclash culture or Amir Abdullah on the US digging scene.
"I have to say that rarely do you see a magazine that provides such in-depth interviews and realistic reviews with people whom you actually want to read about and iCrates magazine checks all of those boxes for me! They definitely have my utmost respect!" - Amir Abdullah (Kon & Amir)
iCrates is about finding the stories, artists and records that we believe make up the fabric of what music is all about, guided always by curiosity and quality rather than genre or trend.
A final thought:
We believe that records tell stories and we want to share them with you.
Don’t forget to check out the iCrates magazine online to see what we’re all about.
"Keep up the good work. There’s something to be said for people flying the flag, trying to preserve and maintain some of the remnants of how the music industry used to be." - Norman Cook AKA Fatboy Slim
Many thanks to all the people who have helped us so far, in particular OYE Records, Andreas "Lupo" Lubich at Dubplates and Mastering, Red Robin, The Mighty Mocambos and Graeme Vaughan for his wonderful camera work for our video.
The rewards (Free delivery):
From exclusive iCrates desktop wallpaper to t-shirts to mounted & framed illustrations, there are all sorts of goodies you can get your hands on... plus of course the iCrates Annual itself (Photos to come!)
Look out for more rewards as the campaign progresses...
Risks and challenges
Having worked closely together for the last two years developing iCrates into a substantial online magazine we believe we are in the perfect position to take the next step into print. Of course, designing, printing and distributing a magazine presents many different challenges, but we're confident that with our experience we can make it happen!
The content for the iCrates Annual is already in place and includes some cracking print-only specials. We're confident you're going to love it!
Professional graphic designer and illustrator Sheila Seyfert-Menzel (http://spoonlight.com/) will be designing and formatting the iCrates Annual. Her experience with print media will be invaluable.
We will work closely with the printers to make sure our unique specifications are met. Our Kickstarter target contains a buffer to cover any unforeseeable extra costs along the way.
We have allocated a bit of extra time and money to this process which we will be handling ourselves from our small office. Our target includes cost of shipping for all magazines and rewards, so you don't have to add anything extra!
