About

Photography is the truth. In its honesty lies its power, and in my hands photography is a marker pen that scrawls my Hip Hop testament on the wall. The exhibition 'The Icons of Wu Tang' is the culmination of a journey through photography, of unlocking shadows trapped on film, then reproduced with ink onto paper. These actions and my meetings with the Wu-Tang Clan over the course of five years have resulted in a series of iconic portraits.

It was on my travels to Italy to view the exhibition proofs that I was inspired by a chapel dedicated to the black Madonna, the Santa Casa di Loreto. This Holy House is said to be the former home of Mary, which was flown to Italy from Palestine by Angels in 1295. It is my wish to recreate this space dubbed the '37th Chamber' in which to hang the iconic prints of the Wu Tang in Brixton East, London. It's my wish to raise £5,500 to cover the cost of printing and shipping 10 exhibition prints and constructing a wooden chamber to house them in.

The economics of the exhibition is simple: At £300 per exhibition print, it'll cost £3000 to create a complete set, around £900 for wood and materials, £900 for labour with a 3 day build by a squad of artisans including myself and master printer Danny Pope. Your investment generates a show. Your orders will not only cover the cost of creating your chosen reward, but will also fund the exhibition prints as well.

I hope that we meet our target of £5,500 so that you and I can see these prints hung together in one beautiful space in March 2016.

Displayed on the walls of the 37th Chamber will be the names of all those that chose a reward.

The Squad

The exhibition has drawn together an exciting mix of long-time collaborators and photographic innovators, curated by FilmsNotDead. The photographs are the best examples of film to digital processes.

All the files used in the production of the show and the Kickstarter rewards will be destroyed on 9th March 2016.

The exhibition prints are made on Hahnemuhle 308gsm archival paper using chromatic light fast pigment ink and coated in museum grade varnish to encapsulate the image.

The exhibition is being printed by Danny Pope, using traditional late 1990s photo printing and scanning processes. Danny is an award winning master colour printer who has previously printed for Linda McCartney, Eve Arnold and Charlie Phillips.

The 37th Chamber will be constructed within Brixton East using wood sourced from renewable sources and sought locally. The carpenters are specialists in period restoration and will create a 9.5m long and 4m wide chamber.

Risks and challenges

As with all creative projects this one is not without its risks. We are working hard, and drawing on our pooled experience, to mitigate against risks by ensuring a simple production plan.

Our biggest risk is that funding is not secured. We need to meet our funding target of £5500 or we get nothing, so please give what you can. If you have any questions at all you can reach us via the button below.

If you’re unable to pledge yourselves but believe in what we are doing, please send the link to our project to friends, family or colleagues that might be able to. You can also use things like facebook and twitter to share our project with your networks.

Thanks for your interest so far, and keep an eye on this page for updates.
